Spearfishing NY: Bluefish and unsupervised kids

"My son would like to start spearfishing" a guy told me as I was walking on the beach with my gear. He was surfcasting and he watched some of my videos on Instagram.
I got in the water at 3pm. I got out at 6pm with 2 bluefish.
The tide was rising, the light was fading.
At sunset, a group of unsupervised kids walked onto the rocks and went wading in the water scooping clams or crabs. It looked like a scene from some Andrei Tarkovsky movie, the way they were moving in different ways.
They reminded of me when I was that age. That is what I would do in the summer. Walk on jetties looking for crabs and shells.
These kids comfortable with the ocean, talking expressing enthusiasm and marvel,
a contrast with so many children in NYC constantly supervised, monitored and glued to their phones and tablets.
On a weekend there are too many boats and jetskis at that time, So I stayed close, but I could not see any fish I could take. Lots of blackfish, not legal to take in NY until October. Striped bass of dubious size. I decided to generally pass on stripers, as it is to hard to asses the legal size slot between 28 and 31 inches when they are swimming in front of you. If I make a mistake and get a short or a long one I'd feel bad, I would get a bad rap from the anglers and I would risk a ticket.
When all the other fish will be gone south and stripers are going the only left, I will take my chances.
At 4:30 the boat traffic subsided. It seems like every boater wants to be back at the marina by 4 pm.
I finally could swim out 150m/yards from the tip, 440m from the beach.
More blackfish, a porgy darted on my left side. A school of bluefish swam quickly in front of me. I tracked one and took a shot just before it would disappear in the murk.
Got it on the tail. my floatline and speargun line got tangled a bit.
it was 4:45 The tide had just started to turn, pushing me away from the rocky bottom, making the water murkier. It took a while to swim back.
Saw some stripers, but I'd take a bluefish over a striper.
