Alex Kamal has a Texan accent because the Mariner Valley was settled by Texans. Then Indians & other Asians came in droves. Since English was the international language they all ended up with that accent in the Valley.
mickys333 The most amazing character arc remains Krisjen, of course. She always gets the best lines, and some serious character development throughout season 1 & 2. Can't wait for Season 3!
ShasOFish Oh god, absolutely. Remember this series starts her out torturing a guy ("Let's give him another 48 hours to think it over") and none of these three are even commenting on that! I honestly thought there would be a bit more dislike for her (there was for me), and it would only be as the show progressed that they came to love her.
If you're familiar with the Dune universe, the pill is like the juice of sapho that the mentats take, or like the pill from "Limitless." It greatly enhances mental performance and allows the interrogator to notice and keep track of very small changes in facial expressions, body language, breathing, and more, and combine it with the information at his disposal to produce highly accurate deductions, tactics, etc.
here`s a little background to understand the factions: As the writers have said, we`ve gotten rid of racism (aka the mixed cast which reflects the mixing of all people (white, black and all in between) throughout the solar system), BUT we now have planetism: even though the differences are small, they rule the people`s mindset. Earth, the old empire under the UN that tries to preserve the status quo and relies on space for the resources to keep its 30 billion residents from splintering apart. Mars, the upstart colony that broke away (don`t worry, that story will come in season 2) that now feels itself the superior to the rest due to its unity and military core, and wants to become a better version of earth and overtake the old one, thus also relying on the resources from the belt to continue its terraforming project, the effort that employs virtually the entire population, as it turns out changing a planet takes some effort. the belt and the outer planets, with all the metals and waterice humanity needs, that want to break free but are kept under permanent occupation by mars and earth to keep the resources flowing to the inner planets, thus causing rising anger and separatism. Now imagine what would happen if some shadow group threw a wrench into this solar system and, for its own motives, tries to start a war with this kind of instability, imagine the shitstorm you`d get......
btw not sure where you are in the story but have you figured out yet who was behind the attack on the cant? (no answers/spoilers here please) teaser, you`ve already seen the mastermind(/s) in these first three episodes....
addick land i love this show but the terraforming always irked me, because from the tech we throughout the series the Martians or any of the other humans have anywhere near the tech required for terraform, as you said terraform a planet takes an absolutely tremendous effort and I really do mean that literally, it’s so hard to the point that it’s easier to build your own habitats in space with Earth like qualities. The energy required to terraform a plane like Mars so that it is like Earth, would literally almost basically take you deconstructing the planet and reconstructing again to get what you want, but at that point the energy you wasted could’ve been used to build dozens of habitats with more surface area than Mars any where you wanted with any sort of customizability you want.
The little pill Lopez takes during the interrogations is a drug to make him hyperfocused, so that he can pick up the tiny gestures people make when they're lying-- it's why he kept telling Naomi to keep her hands where he could see them.
To clear up the confusion about Alex, the Martian brown pilot dude's accent, he is from the Mariner Valley on Mars, which was historically (in the Expanse book-verse) settled by Chinese, Indians and Texans from Earth. So they can look like any one of those groups, but they all speak with an exaggerated Texan drawl.
David Schaufus I'm pretty sure it's the Chi-Normies that are spoiled: squatting in the shadow of his whiskered magnificence without any greater tribute required than absolute submission. ;)
Well, it's not specifically stated, but the first group of people that colonized Mars primarily came from three places" China, India, and... Texas... The Texan accent became pretty common among those from the Mariner Valley.
"An entire society of people, working together to turn a lifeless rock into a garden. We had a garden... and we paved it." Earth is, ecologically, completed devastated in the Expanse universe. It's hard to spot, but in the episode intro scene showing New York, there's seawalls surrounding the city and the Statue of Liberty.
Martians were mostly made up of a mix of Indians, Asians and Texan settlers in the book. Therefore they ended up with browner skin and with Texas drawls.
That cat is the cutest! Edit: I had some more Thoughts. - I'm glad to finally see someone appreciate Avasarala as much as me! Mike's assessment of her is spot on and so much fun to hear about. - Nahid, I love that you keep looking into the camera lol. It makes me feel like you're looking at ME, like I'm there watching it with you guys. - Rana's facial expressions are the best lol. Can't wait to watch the rest of this reaction series! It's so much fun to watch people discover it.
Same. This is probably the best sci-fi series out right now. I'm super excited for other shows they react to like Community, Avatar and OPM but nothing truly compares to the amazing ride the Chi-Normies are embarking on with this show. I look forward to the discussions each episode is gonna spawn, cause this show really makes oneself reflect on the world today, the issues mankind might be facing in the future and what future you want for the world, humanity and your children imo.
Jochen, everytime i look back at the views after a week or two to see if it has gone up, I weep a little. Such a shame that people are not following this series. Cause i feel this is gonna make for some awesome reactions and great discussions. Hopefully it'll pick up when season 3 starts and fans of the show come out of hibernation.
Mars is a military based society but it isn’t the main military power of the system, the strongest nation by far is Earth which has 5 times the fleet that Mars has and they have a way larger population at 30 billion so in an all out war, Earth would pretty much win so Mars is avoiding all conflict with them by becoming a military power and focusing on terraforming.
Glad to see you sticking with this, Nahid, I know the opening episodes are a little tough to push through: you're coming into a whole new story with lots of lore and character development, and that's after the first 6 Seasons (7th having just come out) of GoT. But let me assure you of two things: that it's worth it, and - unlike another series - the books will wrap up the plot before the show does. ;)
Nahid Glad to hear that man, :) If I didn't say it earlier, hope you guys had a Happy Halloween, and are getting a chance to fit in some 'Stranger Things' - don't let those "Mainstream Normies" squeeze you out! xD
Ahh yus. I've been hoping the Normies would continue this series and the reactions have been great thus far. Plus, following the Doctor Who reactions for The Fall of the Doctor, Rana & Nahid have become my favorite part of the Normies. And yes, Rana is definitely belter material.
Actually, on thinking about the idea over dinner, yes, I hope you guys can find some time for more Doctor Who especially the up coming Christmas Special. There are few channels that even do enough Doctor Who reactions and they're either almost caught up or so woefully behind it's sad. I would definitely appreciate a Normie following of the show as well.
I just found your channel a couple hrs ago and watched 3x1 reaction. I'm hooked ppl. Binge watching the ssn 1 & 2 reactions to get ready for tonight's episode😍 Stay Awesome guys 😂❤🚀📺 P.S. great pajamas gurl🙈
The authors do a great explanation of the accent in the books; the Mariner Valley was originally settled by Indians, Chinese, and a small number of Texans. Apparently the accent is contagious. Alex also gets teased about it in the later books by other Martians, because it stands out so much.
The Normies Oh and btw: HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! Since you guys are in Chicago, random show to watch for Halloween is the very first episode of Ozark on Netflix.
The kitty cat is everything to me right now. Agree with the middle guy on social commentary about blame put on certain people. It makes this show very relevant. Great reactions!
Just remember the Donneger is the Flagship of the Martian Fleet, (you mean Chrisjen Avasarala, reminds me of my mother) and the next episode, you'll see it fight.
Why would they be more powerful when their gravity is 1/3 or earth's? If anything they'd be weaker. In fact that's one of the issues with the mission to mars. If we don't come up with something to simulate earth's gravity on mars or a way to counter the effects of low gravity for long periods of time, people who go there would not be able to come back. Clear example, your heart is a muscle. In lower gravity blood weights less so it takes less effort for the heart to pump it through your body. That also means, like all muscles, with less use it'll become weaker. If it keeps going for long enough then, when coming back to earth, it wouldn't be able to pump blood properly or at all. That's why astronauts don't stay longer than 6 months in space and are constantly exercising while in space. Which also means, if humans colonize mars, unless there's some sort of artificial gravity, humans who live there would be way weaker. Not to mention humans born there.
Doesn't devalue anything you said! Earthers are still physically superior for all the reasons you gave. Their warship crews also have a distinct advantage - the Epstein Drive that ships in the Expanse use generate gravity in the direction they point. Ships are constructed like skyscrapers with the drive at the bottom, to give gravity. The faster the ship is accelerating, the more gravity is generated. If you have too much gravity for too long, blood vessels start bursting. Warships do this frequently in combat, as higher speed gives you more time for your point defense to intercept incoming missiles. Earthers, with their 1G native gravity, can withstand acceleration of up to 12G for a few minutes while a Belter with a native gravity of 0.1G would have his bones instantly crushed under anything more than 8G acceleration.
A fact thats touched upon in the series numerous times such as when martians attend peace talks on Earth in the second season. They need to take special calcium pills and take a fair number of other precautions while in Earth's gravity.
"The surface gravity on Mars is only about 38% of the surface gravity on Earth, so if you weigh 100 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 38 pounds on Mars." They would also be taller then folks from Earth.
In this TV show, Mars and Earth, in a political sense, are two military strong governments. As in our world, it's like Russia and the US...both powerful but going against each other is too dangerous for each side. The US is Earth...it's a gem for all other governments...Russia is kind of like Mars, doesn't have living conditions as good as Earth/US but, military wise, it is well prepared and is a huge threat...

Same here. Also from Texas and I never hear an accent that distinct. I could lose a few fingers and still count on one hand the number of people with that accent
They have a patreon where their 1$ subs can vote on the wheel. Past that, feel free to post comments and opinions: that's what I did and was super hyped when they listened and gave it a chance. Maybe a year later and here we are with one of the greatest sci-fi shows around. Probably would have been sooner, but the SyFy channel just does *not* gather up a large audience for even it's best original programming.
Texans and Indians were the original colonisers of Mars, that's why Alex has that ethnicity and accent :D
Dude its fuckin wicked i love it!
@Damian its 200 years in the future. accents change lmao
Alex Kamal has a Texan accent because the Mariner Valley was settled by Texans. Then Indians & other Asians came in droves. Since English was the international language they all ended up with that accent in the Valley.
Nahid's expectation of Martians was hilarious. He's gonna love Bobbie ;)
prophetofgreed They're all gonna love Fred Johnson (and his number two!)
Grangel Aussie Awww Yisss, Drummer!! Man this show has some badass fucking women, man. Swear down.
mickys333 The most amazing character arc remains Krisjen, of course. She always gets the best lines, and some serious character development throughout season 1 & 2. Can't wait for Season 3!

Martian Adderall, specifically :)

Fun fact: There are only two people in the world, Texans and everybody else.

Well, it's not specifically stated, but the first group of people that colonized Mars primarily came from three places" China, India, and... Texas... The Texan accent became pretty common among those from the Mariner Valley.
Yeah its an awesome juxtapose humans trying to turn Mars into a garden whilst having turned Earth into a rock.
That was one of my favorite lines in the whole show so far!

These The Expance reactions are in the top class of The Normies videos. Great stuff!

Nahid, don't get disappointed by the size of the Martians. Wait until you see them in their exo suit. They become battle cyborgs! Just monsters!
Martians were mostly made up of a mix of Indians, Asians and Texan settlers in the book. Therefore they ended up with browner skin and with Texas drawls.

Mars only has 1/3 the gravitational attraction of Earth so the average Martian only needs 1/3 of the musculature of an Earther.
