Virginia's Harley: a Girl's Bike

  • Over the past year, I’ve documented Virginia's creation of this motorcycle. The bike started as a stock '96 XL1200c, and through many hours of late nights, dirty fingernails and torn gloves, Virginia was able to complete the bike you see her riding today. The bike above covers about 6 months of building from January to June of 2015. Because neither of us had a lot of experience building motorcycles, we pulled knowledge and advice from the people around us, and through lots of information online. We're both happy to see the bike complete, and even more happy to present to you our journey through it.

Im 26. Ive been working as a motorcycle mechanic for the past 6 monthes and....I've never owned a real road bike. Ive got a moped thats been in pieces and an old scrap rat rod xl250 in pieces but never had a really road bike. You Virginia have given me the inspiration to just go out and grab something, make it my own, and RIDE IT! You are truly an inspiring human being. Awesome video. Much Love.

Thanks for sharing your experience as you journeyed through this build. I'm a 63 year old dentist in Eugene Oregon. My first bike was a V-Star 650 I traded for dental implants about 5 years ago. Since then I've traded 5 Harley Davidsons and a few other bikes for dental work. About a year ago I began buying old wrecks and various other bikes to hand build them into my creations. I understand what it's like to be able to say I built it". Too awesome.

So many things about this video get to me. A woman riding! Wrenching her own bike! Welding?!?!?! That's awesome. Even more is that she has PASSION. She wants something different and researches it. Yet she lets her muse lead her as she's building. I gotta admit... that lathe! I love retro machine's. I fix machine's from conventional mills and lathes to CNC. Nothing holds my fancy like these old school machines. I would give her 70 thumbs up if I could

Very cool. There is something indescribable about taking a couple of pieces of metal, turning on the welder, doing some grinding and a bit more welding until you get exactly what you want. I made a few sissy bars and luggage racks that, ok,... didn't look quite like you'd buy them from Cobra all chromed out,... but I MADE THEM and they just made the otherwise stock bike MINE. Can't imagine the pride you have in doing it from the frame up. If I had the shop space, I'd start this afternoon on a project like that. Good for you! RIde on on your "Virginia".

Such a sick build. So crazy to see how many different looks you can get out of a motorcycle. Fun and frustration pretty much sums it up for me. You go down the rabbit hole and eventually just want to finish the bike so you can finally ride it.

This is fantastic. I grew up with Harley's, but haven't got my own bike yet. My heart is just longing for this. While I wait to be able to ride, I spend most of my time learning and drawing bikes. Your bike is absolutely gorgeous Virginia! I love it. I totally agree with everything you said.. I am restoring my square body suburban and doing it all myself: learning to weld, paint, etc. Totally inspired by everything you've said and done. It would be my dream to build my own bike someday! xo, LC

Well I learned the hard way, by my own ordeal with my pre-owned 2001 Sportster 883, and watching many videos like yours, that once a Harley-Davidson motorcycle gets to a certain age, you have to find a custom building/maintaining shop to get in-depth work done because Harley-Davidson in general no longer cares.
Thank You for sharing your video.

This person shared their experience of building and riding a customized bike. It makes no difference if it a man or woman. Good for them for finding something constructive and useful to do work their time and money. Anyone who craps on this woman hasn't experienced the pleasure and pain of building your own ride. Keep building and keep riding, to he'll with the naysayers!

I give you major, major props. Not because you are a girl and as you said, did something unconventional, but because you built your own bike from the ground up. I believe that when one builds their own ride, be it on two, three or four wheels you become one with that piece of machinery. I guess that since I grew up the youngest child and the only boy on the farm that seeing a girl turn a wrench or get dirty isn't all the out of the ordinary to me. Heck, I know a lot of guys that don't even own a tool box, let alne know what a ratchet is. So good for you for having a talent and being able to refine that talent and put it to good use.

Got to love a woman who not only rides, but builds her own bike. I'm a guy, and I build cars, mostly hot rods and drag race cars. I ride a '97 Superglide, but have not gone beyond bolt on mods, because I want to keep it functional. My 57 year old back wouldn't handle a hardtail very well. When I get the time, I like to hit the road for days at the time.

    • @michaelledford4751
      @michaelledford4751 8 років тому +1

A proper hard tail set up for rider comfort vs looks is as comfortable as softails , my 36 EL knucklehead HT is actually more comfortable for me to ride than my 55 panhead FLH ST , or my 70 shovelhead FLH ST , I've got quite a few other HD's ranging from Buells to Sprints and the only bike in our collection that's as comfortable as my HT knuckle is my wife's 93 FLSTF I lowered 3" for her and built a custom saddle , rear tire choice , front end and saddle choice can make a hard tail a smoother ride than softails , I have arthritis in my hands so the rocker clutches in the knuckle & pan make for a pain free ride .

You made it so it feels right.... it feels right because you made it, therefore you have more respect for that particular machine. You have all the time, the sweat and effort put into making something that you could enjoy for many many years to come. Enjoy the spoils of all your hard work as you've most certainly earned it. That is, after all, what it's all about; being able to get out there on the open road, free from all the stress, soaking in nature with the wind in your face atop a two wheeled monster! May your roads be fair, weather clear and your journeys forever lasting. As to you wanting to see more women riding, if you call they will come. Keep being seen and continue riding and bringing awareness that riding is for everyone. Motorcycles see no color, no gender, no creed. I am glad to have you as a fellow rider so in parting I will simply say that should we ever cross paths, I will give you the respect you've earned.

I'm an introvert, borderline misanthrope. The kind of person in this video is the exact kind of person that I would like to be friends with. I so admire people like this who get an idea, then do whatever it takes to make that idea come to life. Along the way learning new things, making mistakes, getting injuries, getting discouraged, all that shit. But, in the end, you come out with the coolest fucking thing - way cooler than you ever imagined and with the satisfaction in knowing that you. fucking. made. this.
Awesome job Virginia - there need to be more people in this fucked up world like you - and not just females - more people, no matter what they consider themselves, need to have this kind of spirit.
You rock - I'd love to buy you a beer, cream soda, shot - whatever and end up talking to you. I have a feeling that I'd come away from that convo a much better person.

Way to go gal, I went to small gas engine repair school for this and built my first bike back in 79. My teacher was more of a lawn mower guy and didn't know anything about bottom ends fabrication etc. I wasn't happy but in one year I built my one and only bike, a 76 sportster candy apple red and a bobber. I did not even know what to call them back then, but yep, it was a bobber. Or as my wife said. very minimalistic. First cop pulled me over for speeding just looked it over and said cool you were speeding. I told him I just built it and didn't put the speedo on, so he waved and said have fun. Any way that was the end of my serious building efforts, I needed a shop and some one that could teach me the rest of the ropes. I did own a couple of more Harley's after that .............But now I am an old man and I still would like to have that first bike I built. I think the total cost was around $2200. Looked at bobbrts now, Oh man not in this life time,Don't sell your first one. Your soul mate ,Mike

I have a '72 Iron in boxes in the garage and decided that I'm either going to get it on the road this year or get rid of it. I have no idea what I'm doing. The '96 looks stellar though. Great job. On the other hand.. the CB750? Oh so sexy. What a great bike. I don't have one but it's on the list for my motorcycle harem. Preferably a '75.

Fuck yeah! I married my wife because she knows how to tune a 2 stroke, (I ride a Kawi 750 triple 2 smoker), plus she has a nice ass.

My dad had one of those Honda CB500 when I was young. We took long road trips with it a couple of times, just me and him.
He later traded it for a bigger bike (can't remember the model), which we still have in our garage.
Sadly, my dad is not with us anymore. But me and my brother is thinking of getting licenses, so we can ride it.
