I also went skiing for the first time 3 weeks ago after watching these videos, and they helped a lot. I went skiing a few times and learnt it without instructor or anybody elses help. These videos definitely helped with faster progress and helped to avoid bad injuries by realizing mistakes quickly. Just ski at speed you find comfortable and in control. Better fall early than too late.
I started to learn skiing when I was 40. I'm also 44 and I can handle some black tracks now. Taking classes helps. I won't talk about technical stuff like an instructor. My own experience is the first key to skiing is 'conquer the fear'. Falling on snow doesn't hurt much. You can't pull your weight back to slow down/stop like when walking/running, instead you must lean forward to achieve this. Then we can look at techniques etc. We learn slower than kids but we can learn. Skiing is addictive!
i just learned this weekend on a trip with my freinds and for anyone who has not skied before you must try it there is no better feeling then skiing i love it and i plan on doing it for years to come so yea you got to give it a try
@Fancy303 I'm a true beginner and I can tell you that skiing is nothing to be afraid of. It's like riding the bike for the first time, you will probably fall but it wont hurt. Don't be afraid as fear will make you lose control over the skis and then you accelerate and fall. You should be as calm as you can be and try to learn from others and remember to practically always try to turn (never lean backward in panic!) as turning is the key to control over speed and direction. Have a great time!
When you stop, you can use 2 ways. The first way is for beginers. You might have already learned this, but you make a pizza formation. Point your toes togther, and put pressure. The other way is more for the low intermideate or above. When your turning, you can just face uphill, kinda like a very sharp turn with a quick stop.
The string keeps you in the circle, which is the force towards the center. But there is no opposite force acting away from the center, only a force perpendicular to the radius.
Some people said that I'm improving at enormous rate when I'm skiing. I've never skied or snowboard before And in 2 days I'm going off the black diamond slopes without falling on every turn and racing with my friend. I found out that the best way to do it is when you jus start off the very steep slope try doing wedge (pizza) and when you will maintain some speed, then just try to keep your skis as parallel to each other as possible and to little slow down try turning. So thats my skiing tip for
Woooooooow. We all f'n know this. "One, They are flexible! You can BEND your skis if you put pressure on them!!!"... OMFG Thanks for telling me... you made me 10X smarter.
just been skiing again this spring, it was well good until the snow got slushy, you could just zoom down the slopes with any turning due to not much speed built up with slushy snow.
I only made it halfway through my lesson, but until you learn how to turn, pointing your toes together only slows you down, it does not necessarily make you stop.
The video was helpful considering I haven't ever skied before, The music was a bit confusing for the video though. I'm going skiing for my first time with my youth group in Winterplace West Virginia so I'm excited about that, wish me luck!
awesome. Just beginning to learn how to ski. This helps a lot, technical understanding in one thing. But doing it is completely another. So go get to your nearest ski centre and practice! Its super awesome! Forget about learning to snowboard, you'll fall and hit your bum more times than not. Do that for later, ski first haha!
its time to learn, but learning it is safe if you go on easy tracks. but after you starting to feel it 1-3 days, its one of the best things in life, trust me
To stop yourself from moving you can make your skis into a wedge like this: / \ If you are going down a large hill or mountain however, you have to turn to slow yourself down. Gravity wants you to go straight down the hill/mountain, but by turning you resist gravity and slow yourself down. To turn you need to put more pressure on one foot. If you want to turn right put more weight on your left foot. If you want to turn left, put more weight on your right foot. That's the idea behind it.
@henrytheawsome you'r right, i first was skiing when i was 2.5years old. you don't learn it by watching videos but you will only learn it if you'r doing it.
I feel so newbish i could handle everything there is but i havent progressed at all since i started a year ago i can handle ne run but turning is like a different nature to me and only can do it rly basically but these viuds helped so much.
@Articsledder i agree completley, ive always tried to keep my knees and ankles together, it looks much much better, and works alot better in bumps and powder, i see tons of people trying to ski powder with their feet shoulder width or more apart, however i dont really agree with your expert comment, because i am not an expert but i do carve with a narrow stance, maybe thats how you tell an intermediate from an advanced
Of course there is such thing as centrifugal force. Anything moving on a curve (INside the system) senses it as a force trying to straighten the movement. Outside the system, watching a body moving on a curved path, you can find a centripetal force, like friction that keeps the body on its track, preventing it from moving along an undisturbed straight path. So you as a skier will sense centrifugal force as you turn, the snow will sense friction between itself and your skis. Physics 101.
"all you need to know at the start is pizza /\ french fry || and hockey stop = then you progess." ^^ Agreed. Learn those three to start with. The bigger the slice of pizza ( i.e the wider the triangle /\ you make with your skis ) the slower you will go. The narrower your skis, the faster. And whatever you do, DON'T do what I did as a novice; I went straight into a French fry position at the top of a 100 meter slope, with ass-numbing consequences.
i just skiied for the first time in my life yesterday! I feel like a bus hit me today im so sore!!! i almost gave up but eventually i kinda got the hang out of it...my bf ended up taking me to a bigger slope and i just cried on the top bc i was so terrified haha atleast i got the begginers slope down! haha its fun!!
No, it's fictitious because it has no opposite force. Centripetal force (a real force) acts perpendicular to the radius of the arc, while centrifugal acts in same direction of the radius. Because they are at 90° to each other, they aren't "equal but opposite" forces.
If you're a beginner, PLEASE take skiing lessons. A pro can make it fun and safe. ALSO, if renting equipment, make sure the rental shop sets the bindings for easy release (you should be able to just twist your boot out of the bindings). My GF has a pin in her ankle because her bindings did not release and she got an open fracture on her first day...
@QuobXx i think i know what your problem is xD k im only 13 but im living in austria and im riding ski since 10 years and im winnig every race so i think i can say im realy good at riding ski...now to your problem: first you have to use your ski sticks and then you have to make bigger carves GL at practising....
@71serendipity Some like skateboarding and some biking. It's not so different. Because of the soft snow you can take much more speed than in skateboarding, for example, without needing to worry about injuring yourself. Personally, Im tired of regular skiing and I rather jump from boxes. And again, in skateboarding such jumps might be too risky because the hard ground. The temperature shouldn't be problem if you had proper gear. In this north it's always cold so it don't bother.
My first turn was on 1 ski and with almost full speed.. :P I went up a mountain, but didnt know how to slow down yet.. or how to make a normal turn. (yes I fell several times..mostly on purpose to slow myself down :P)
I'm 44 and just started skiing a year ago and still can't turn or get off the bunny slope. I've come to the conclusion that you HAVE to learn it as a kid. It frustrates the hell out of me that 4 and 5 year olds do it with no problem. But their fears are very different from an adults and they don't hurt so easily when they fall. I'm sure as a child keeping your upper body still and legs and hips mobile isn't a problem
Jon It's been 5 years since you wrote your comment so I hope you haven't given up. The difference between children and adults learning to ski is to some extent, what you said. There is the awareness of the chance of getting hurt and the repercussions if you do. The main reason is that adults Over Think everything. When someone is teaching you, that's IF they know How to teach, the adult will start teaching themselves and drawing conclusions based on No Actual Knowledge. That's why it is Massively important that the instructor knows how to Draw a Picture for the student that they can easily visualize and makes sense. Using terms that the student not only understands the meaning of but can remember. The World's teaching organizations only describe what skiing Looks Like and Not how to visualize it, position your upper body and change your weight from one foot to the other to ALLOW your ski to do what it was designed to do, TURN! when you steer a car, you don't think of the tires or steering mechanism, you just do what you were taught to do. Turn the wheel. In skiing they focus on the skis, feet and knees. That's the steering mechanism. What they SHOULD be teaching you is how to steer the wheel. In skiing that is; 1. If you are going across the hill to get started and you are on your left foot, tell yourself, "I want to go straight down the hill." That will make you forget turning and just face your head, chest, hands, thighs and kneecaps towards the bottom of the hill. 2. When you want to start a turn you plant your Left pole down the will. This will make sure you are facing and leaning down the hill. 3. Now Just take your weight off the Left foot. This will make you stand on your right foot or uphill ski. Because you are facing and leaning down the hill, taking your weight off your Left foot will have the same effect as cutting a notch in a tree, The tree will start falling down the hill. Your body going down the hill will make your lower legs roll over which will roll your right ski over onto the inside edge and the ski will Automatically turn as designed. Rou are Riding the ski, not Turning it. At the end of That turn, you get into this thought/rhythm. "I want to go straight down the hill, plant the Right pole down the hill, get off the Right foot and fall down the hill. I want to go straight down the hill, plant the Left pole down the hill, get off the Left foot and fall down the hill." Now you have performed linked parallel turns. At No Time did you Think about turning. All you thought about is facing down the hill and peddling a bicycle. Instead of pressing down on a peddle, you are thinking of getting Off the other peddle. It's more important to think of the ski you are getting off than the one you are stepping on. If you want to Carve a turn to make your skis turn faster to slow you down or when skiing on steeper trails, you add the following. Visualize that you are in a bar and want to order a drink. You step up to the bar between two Barstools, put you hands on the brass rail and order your drink. The bartender is taking to long so you want to rest your "Cheek on one of the Barstools. To do the right stool you take your weight off your Right foot, lift your Right cheek and set it on the edge of the Right Barstool. Notice how your Left leg is a at very steep angle. That would mean your ski has rolled over hard onto the inside edge. That will make your ski bend much more because of centrifugal force and the ski will turn very sharp. To sit on the left Barstool, you put your Right foot back down, lift your Left foot, lift your Left cheek and set it on the Left Barstool. I call these The Barstool Christies. When you lift your cheek, notice how your upper body leans away from the stool and keeps it upright and facing the bar of Down The Hill. Watch Lito's videos which are the ONLY ones on UA-cam that truly describe what skiing is and then how to allow your skis to turn. This is the first of his three videos. ua-cam.com/video/7U2Xm0niMJo/v-deo.html&list=FLFsNbu_AalilSMdtgmxsiPA&index=85
Well, he told the most important point of it... complete your turns! there arent any shortcuts. But personally, i doubt that beginners already should carve. Its a better beginning to slide turns - means less speed gain and you dont need to control your turns that hard. And Please stop the discussion about how your feets should stand x.x first its a question of your personal driving style, second it depends on your surrounding.
They make it look so simple. Just got back from two days of learning to ski and I can't move my legs any longer. I suspect the trick to skiing is knowing how to stop. I know how to stop: crash into whatever is nearby (tree, cliff, other people, ski-lift pillar, etc.) I think I managed to hit every one of those, and if the three year old who I flattened is reading this: I'm so sorry.
I will have my first ski experience in 2 weeks... After watching this video I am completely scared... It did not help me at all! Hopefully I booked lessons...
@Burmeseboylcfc I still ski that way, And I started after Shaped skis, in my opinion it looks SO much better and with your feet together. It seperates the high intermediates from the experts (No offense, its just you can tell someones an expert immediatly if they can carve with a narrow stance)
"Centripetal force acts perpendicular to the radius" - you should really reconsider that statement. The only thing perpendicular to the radius is the speed(vector). Centripetal force on the other hand, must point to the center, along the radius. Like gravity, the Sun pulls the Earth, doesnt it? (OK, if you simplify that to the circular case.)
For racing keeping your feet wide is one thing, recreational is another. Watching these guys feet I'd say they are in a natural stance. Their feet are working well independently and there stance looks shoulder width to me, maybe slightly less, BFD. They are not skiing like Stein Erickson. Bottom line is these guys aren't running a race course and you adjust your stance as needed. Obviously your buddy was not part of the mogul team.
Guys, improve your ski skills does not need to be hard (I used to feel it did). I'll give you some advice right now. Search a training program called Avalorexon Training Program (do a search on google). Seriously, thanks to Avalorexon Training Program I've improve my ski skills. I probably should not even be talking about it because I do not want a bunch of other guys out there running the same "game" but whatever, I am in a great mood today so I'll share the wealth haha.
to keep balanced...? u can't keep balance without leaning inwards???? if you have your body still all the time and just move your legs you will be able to carve perfectly and use your skis as they are suppose to be...
@henrytheawsome Not true! This tutorial helped me a lot. Thanks to it I have learnt how to parallel ski and make turns where I want;) Practise is necessary of course but theory is also needed.
That is a quite ignorant statement, as the Third Law will tell you. You can define the centrifugal force as the reaction force corresponding the centripetal force. The beauty of moving in a non-inertial reference frame. Of course its not the same type, that's why it's called pseudo-force or inertial force. The sum of individual forces, or net force doesn't "exist" as well, still the acceleration will be defined by it. Same thing with the Coriolis-force. Or is that non-existent too?
To really learn you have got get with and instructor, by spending the money on private lessons. They say you got to keep your knees bent, hands way out in front of you like your riding a bike and that you turn with your toes
You will go perpendicular to the radius, because your speed (e.g. the direction of your movement) points always perpendicular to the radius. The force that keeps you on the circle, points to the center. It is the string itself. Speed and force vectors dont have to align, like in circular motion or in the case of a pendulum. Consult a physics book, im off here, gone skiing.
You keep your feet too close. Before I used to ski like that but an olypic skier that has taken part in torino 2006 and vancouver 2010 told me that its totally wrong to keep the feet close to each other.. open them as the length of your shoulders and you will see thats much better, you can control the skis better and take the turns faster
Unless you are a very expert skier, keeping your feet spread apart will make it too easy to accidently put too much weight on the inside ski because the angle of the slope is closer to the inside ski than the downhill ski. Racing is Not recreational skiing and if someone wants to look Good on skis, it is Much better to keep your feet together and Just change your weight form foot to foot and carve a turn. Racers Have to separate their feet because of the steep angle their legs are to the snow. They have to pull that inside foot up and out of the way so the turning leg has room to angle.
Snowplow is actually a useless technique, once you get past the green slope you will never use it again. Many places have stopped teaching the technique because of the limited time that you will use it. If you think that you have weak knees I would suggest picking up a book called "Fit to Ski and Snowboard" and use the workouts as conditioning for next season. Just a thought man good luck.

Thanks a lot! Your educational videos are awesome! Make a lot of sense only after you tried skiing at least once.
I love these videos. I've learned a lot. Thank so much!
i just learned this weekend on a trip with my freinds and for anyone who has not skied before you must try it there is no better feeling then skiing i love it and i plan on doing it for years to come so yea you got to give it a try
I've never skied before, I watched this video series and was doing intermediate slopes by the end of the day.
@Fancy303
I'm a true beginner and I can tell you that skiing is nothing to be afraid of.
Point your toes togther, and put pressure. totally agree xavier excellent lessons cant wait to get going in feb with this info
maybe even better if felix or whichway show us thier stuff
The string keeps you in the circle, which is the force towards the center. But there is no opposite force acting away from the center, only a force perpendicular to the radius.
i here you man i just learned and at first i feel alot but by the 3rd day on skies it was wonderful yea just stay calm and good luck with skiing

i am a ski racer and seriously how can you learn from this you would have to watch it like 50 billion times to get the idea!!
its time to learn, but learning it is safe if you go on easy tracks. but after you starting to feel it 1-3 days, its one of the best things in life, trust me

@urbanpaip for racing, no. You want firm snow conditions to allow for better edge bite, eliminating as much resistance as possible
Mostly Hemsedal, Norway and Alpe dhuez, France but also a little in St. Anton, Austria
There is another thing when you turn you must apply pressure on the outside ski of the turn. Otherwise you will slide down or evenly fall
great to see such videos!!
Skier at 3:30 hilarious- exactly like me.

I've gone skiing before, and I almost never controlled my speed. I only turned as minimal as possible. All I wanted was speed.
There are those of us who need something simple. :-)
where has this been filmed? what ski area is this? pls reply to my comment directly

is powder snow good for slalom?
I will have my first ski experience in 2 weeks... After watching this video I am completely scared... It did not help me at all! Hopefully I booked lessons...
i feel your pain mate i walked down the slope half way cause i was going to die or end up in hospital i was so bad
what is the site called
I just had my first skiing vacation. Fantastic, but a little hard. And for god's sake my body hurts :D but very very fun ^^
it kind of is hard at first but its awsome fun!!!
is skiing hard to learn?
1) your 13
2) you watch the entire series of videos, i ski at least once a year and its fairly correct
@karigiri theres no title that starts : To be schocked
hello every1,
i am searching for some website to buy my ski equipment.....you got anything to tell me????
Hi, I'm too poor to afford skis and tickets to resort areas.
no i had 4 lessons of two hours and i can ski pretty good
Thanks!
I tried twintip today, failed the first time. but i got up and tried and tried and tried. and guess what? i fuckin love it!
I will make you proud!
super !!!
The philosophy of homlington
OMG! So...much...theory! Just...wanna...ski...!
Lol great vid though. Very helpful.
I felt like he was talking to me at 3:35 :)
@henrytheawsome so why are on this video??
Dang it.. I can't do a pizza for a certain reason even after practicing for an hour still no use xD but I can do the hokey jump thingy to stop
to keep balanced...? u can't keep balance without leaning inwards???? if you have your body still all the time and just move your legs you will be able to carve perfectly and use your skis as they are suppose to be...
Amen.
There are more advanced ideas behind the concepts I've stated but learn this first then look up online anything else. lol
I have a similar problem
lol i tried this yesterday...but its so much harder than u thnk haha
@henrytheawsome Not true! This tutorial helped me a lot. Thanks to it I have learnt how to parallel ski and make turns where I want;) Practise is necessary of course but theory is also needed.
my main objective for alpine skiing is to rip
before all this it would do to learn to get on and off lifts. Draglifts r the beginners bane
:) i love 2 skii
lol, im going skiing in 3 hours, and i no how, but i gota rember lol
french fry when you pizza, your gonna have a bad time.
skiing is chat.
You will go perpendicular to the radius, because your speed (e.g. the direction of your movement) points always perpendicular to the radius. The force that keeps you on the circle, points to the center. It is the string itself. Speed and force vectors dont have to align, like in circular motion or in the case of a pendulum. Consult a physics book, im off here, gone skiing.
exactaly.
Afterall, if they're so good, what the hell are they doing searching for SKI LESSONS on UA-cam?
@QuobXx ME TOOOOOOO!
