  • 5 Principles of Lean
The 5 principles of lean as espoused by Daniel Jones and James Womack include:
    1. Specify Value. If an organization decides to adopt lean business practices, it must ask itself what its value-add is? Why do customers buy our products or services?
    2. Identify the Value Stream. The value stream, as we have discussed in a previous OPEX minute, includes all of the material and information flow from customer order to delivery of that order or fulfillment of the service. Most organizations have more than one core value stream. It is important for organizations to identify and then improve these, primarily with the next principles.
    3. Make Value Flow. Once we understand what our value streams are, our goal is to make value flow through the value streams with as little delay as possible. We are trying to get as close to continuous flow as possible.
    4. Let the customer Pull. Another value stream concept is to eliminate the pushing of material or information and create pull systems in which the information or material is delivered to the next downstream customer when it needs it based on consumption.
    5. Seek Perfection. This is the idea of continuous improvement- constantly seeking to improve quality and eliminate waste.
Some in the lean community today think these principles are inadequate or outdated. I don’t believe this is true. These principles still make sense, but they were never all encompassing. While they do not mention the people aspect of lean, the idea of lean culture and respect for people is the way in which these principles would thrive within an organization. Without respect for people, lean is impossible.
