All of the tracks in Daytona USA and Daytona USA 2 can be driven in reverse, a feature only mentioned in passing in some promotional flyers. This is easiest to do on the Advanced and Expert tracks as you can more easily turn the car around from a standing start. Initially, the crew chief will yell at you over the radio to turn the car back around, but after continuing to drive the wrong way the flashing "REVERSE" warning will shrink and be placed out of your way at the bottom of the screen. When this happens, driving through checkpoints in the reverse order will grant you extra time like normal and you can still complete the race by crossing the finish line on the last lap.
Obviously the biggest hazard now is running head on to the rest of the computer controlled cars; solid contact with a computer car while driving the wrong way will count as a hard crash and cause a short cutscene to trigger where the car flips end over end in the air, similar to crashing into a wall at a sharp angle. Glancing hits will cause you to lose some speed without causing the flipping crash animation to play. Keep an eye on the minimap to know when the first place car is about to pass by and get ready to dodge! You can also drive outside lines through corners to avoid contact as the computer drivers usually stay tight to their programmed line.
The fastest driving line is entirely different when running the track in reverse, so you will have to keep that in mind as you try and navigate the track backwards; speeds and gears to pick in corners will be largely the same though. On tracks with long pit roads like the Beginner course, you can drive full speed through the pit lane while in reverse mode without triggering the pit stop cutscene, so use this to take a break and catch your breath from dodging the other cars. If you do make it through the packs of computer cars and clear the corners without running out of time, you can complete the race by driving across the finish like normal. Additionally, if you put down a time fast enough to make it to the high score board, either a large R will be shown next to your initials in Daytona USA or you will be placed on a special Reverse scoreboard in Daytona USA 2.
On Power Edition you can actually do a proper Reverse course race if you hold start on course select I believe (or maybe its at transmission select, I forget). On Battle On the Edge you can't do Reverse but you can do mirrored.
Huh, didn't know holding Start during Start Your Engines sequence will play Takenobu vocals, you can set them in the Test menu too, maybe it works vice versa if it's set to Takenobu's vocals, playing Dennis' instead

I wonder how this game calculates positions. It credited you a lap and the finish before any of the AI cars got you but still placed you last.

Turn around you're heading the wrong way
Running in reverse crashing head on into the AI cars not only making you flip onto the air, the AI car also flips but they fly obey their set path, from the memory of playing reverse arcade mode in Desert City from CCE

Yep! You can play either by immediately turning around or by holding the START button while selecting your track. Either way, the game will still keep track of your time and place you on the high score board if you are fast enough. Turning around is more fun in my opinion since you've got to dodge all the traffic!

I made a mistake, but it looked cool! Shifting down when entering a corner slows the car down and starts drifts; lower gears slow you down even faster, but are also more sensitive to steering input. I shifted to a very low gear and was steering too sharply and that made the car spin out! If the car ever starts to spin on you, don't panic, don't turn the wheel, and wait for the complete spin to end before trying to save the car; if you're patient, you just might be able to catch the spin and save your race!
