    My mother works full time but she always got up early in the morning to make me and my brother bentos every day. I had the pleasure of eating it everyday in America, among a sea of plain sandwiches and burgers the other kids ate. I love my mom.

    In the US, Moms (or Dads) hurry thier little ones into the SUV to hurry to the Starbucks (while on thier cellphones) for cofffe and hurry to the roundabout (still on the cell) at school where they slow only enough to push the kid(s) out where they will enjoy the sodium filled breakfast and lunch served by a Union staffer and provided by the Government.
    Children are the most important thing in ones life and a parent should take advanatage of every moment.

    For my daughter's elementary school sports day, excursion or other events that need homemade lunch, it's my duty to make bento. My daughter can not live anymore without seasoning of father. Ah, when her mother was cooking, also my daughter praises work of her mother of course. But I can say with confidence that I'm the best cook in my family. My daughter ten years old always says, "dad, you are really a professional!". By the way, I don't make character bento.

    My daughter lives in Zushi near Ikego Housing Area and Navy Annex.She is 29 and have three children.All elementary and kindergarten are in walking distance of each house.A wife of US navy's civilian employee sends a child to my daughter's also.They are all housewives and enough time to make lunch box or obento. It seems working mothers may have tough time for children.

    When I was a child, such culture did not exist.
    The latest mother is busy from a morning.
    If a child is glad, although I will be fortunate, because there are also many mothers who are working.
    However, mother is dexterous.
    Totoro is like an art.
    私が子供の頃はこういう文化はなかった。
    最近の母親は朝から忙しいな。子供が喜べば幸せだろう、だけど、仕事してる母親も多いから。
    しかしお母さん達は器用だ。トトロは芸術だな。

    How fantastic. It's a great idea and I don't believe it's that time consuming once you get used to it. Japanese rice is like playdough anyway. You can make any shape out of it. It's more a case of being creative.
    When you're in a hurry, trying to get ready in the morning, it's probably hard to stop and think of "cute" things to create. If you do manage, I'm sure it's quite therapeutic.

    Actually the ones I got were about right.. from what i seen in Japanese Drama anyways.. unless Japanese Dramas exaggerate that too a bit.. The child ones are two sizes.. one is a smaller size which would be about a normal child size in Japan and the other is a two story one ALSO said to be child size but I would class it as Adult size.. I have seen actual bento as i know ppl from Japan.. also I know a lot of them are quite large.. but the ones I found in Target are pretty similar..

      @THINKNOTHING 9 років тому

      +Jesse Chronicles Even looks like an ordinary sandwich to you. Look closely, it is more likely fried pork cutlet or Korokke which consist of potato, onion, ground beef and fried that many Japanese kids love. Some kids prefer bread instead of rice sometimes and likely kids requested their mother to make sandwich instead of normal bento. Beware, it is not like peanut butter sandwich that you probably imagine. It looks to me a homemade sandwich with vegetables are also in this sandwich. My wife used make Bento for our son (he is all grown now) and she enjoyed making it everyday. She loves to hear my son's feed back about how good it was. She used to tell me this when I get home from work with a big smile on her face.

    • @normatorrecillas
      @normatorrecillas 9 років тому

      +THINKNOTHING Oh, I stand corrected. I wish this was the culture in the US, because the lunches of my childhood were terrible.

    • @THINKNOTHING
      @THINKNOTHING 9 років тому +1

      +Jesse Chronicles I am not saying you are wrong about sandwiches. But, what I am saying to you is not like an ordinary sandwiches that you normally get for lunch in the U.S.. (Definitely not peanut/jam) Just google it for Japanese sandwiches and you will see what I am talking about. I am Japanese but, spent my teenage life to early adulthood in the U.S. so I understand the differences of life style between two countries.
      I think the U.S. women are much more independent than Japanese women. You can find more moms having professional career than Japanese women. The most of Japanese moms who works are part timers and not full time workers which gives them time to do other things like making lunch boxes for kids. If you work full time, you really don't have time to do so even you want to make nice lunch box for their children.
      Like you mentioned, culture and history are away different which has a lot to do with it as well. Not to offend your history nor culture but, Onigiri (rice ball) has longer history than your country. Our culture is more than a few thousand years vs a few hundred years with many races with different back ground and still many races with different back ground are moving into your country. With longer history and culture, something comes more natural of doing everyday things.
      But, love for their children are all same.
      For Bento, yes, I love the way Japanese moms take care of their children. However, there are many other things are much better in the U.S..

I think they are quite nice and a great Idea. I don't have kids but I'd make my kids bento look nice :).. But then I like showing my love :3..
