  • A common issue on the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio in North America are corroded battery posts caused by their trans Atlantic voyage on salt water seas. Unfortunately battery post cleaning is not a protocol for the pre-delivery process at dealers. Even a small amount of corrosion can cause a false flag reporting of component malfunctions or non-start events. This video walks-through a tutorial on how to clean your car to ensure 100% reliability. Only simple hand tools are needed and A small amount of battery post gel. The process takes about 15 minutes, the video includes the recent procedure to clear codes without a code reader. The same applies to the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Quadtafolio models.

I just followed these instructions, and they absolutely work!! My start/stop error message was cleared. Not only do the instructions work, but this should be a how-to video on how to make diy videos.

Good job John, you are going out of your way to help the brand, sadly FCA doesn't seem to care so much, they would rather have the customer on the side of the road.

Thanks a lot for this Video ! 👍👍👍👍👍
Will you please show us where exactly that start / stop relay goes in that fuse box ?
It seems like there are multiple of relays that look alike without any diagram to show which is which !! Thanks

Great video! I have a Stelvio 2.2 Jtd 2018 and I hope this battery post cleaning procedure works also with my Stelvio.
The IBS probably drops the side mirror and rear wondow heaters off because the battery is not new anymore.
I want to see if this problem is caused by corroded battery posts and can be fixed like in your video.
    Thanks anyway, great stuff!

OK, please let me know how it turns out. Since you have a 2018 the battery could be near 5 years old. Also good to change the key fob battery, a CR2032.

I did the post clean, but still seems to some parasitic drain, perhaps someone knows what it could be?
Bought new in Europe, no faults found on battery they say, but unless i charge it if not driven the battery drains out in ca 5 days

Clarification, S&S dash message is not any normal below 70% SoC, usually comes when there are ECU erros, but one odd case also when bonet is not fully closed (one of latches not latched or sensor there faulty - some Giulia/Stelvios had factory not adjusting this right so bonet was not closing easily and required latches adjusts, as well as there were some older where there were issues with lock/linkage from cabin and was service news about replacing whole). S&S self disables below 65% SoC but even at super low SoC levels (say like 10%) still no message on the dash (earlier you get Low Battery). I dealt a lot of Giulia/Stelvios in my garage (retrofits/conversions), various manufacturing dates, various versions, both EU and USA market (USA imported - very popular in Poland, did reprogramming to EU operation/FM/stop/indicators/nav etc). Also for products and prototyping I did a lot of S&S and SoC experiments with diagnostic computer plugged in and bus analyzers to IBS. Of course no harm to clean terminals when there are some odds - a few times I seen cars where somebody didn't tight battery terminals correctly after e.g. replacing battery, and so there were plenty of odds/DTC errors etc. Even dealers did mistakes there when they e.g. changed battery to new for long stocked car before sell to customer.

Thank you very much. The 1000+ hours of ocean transport and dock time of our Alfa Romeos is what is causing the problem. These cars are shipped with unprotected terminals and the energize contact surfaces of the disimilar metals are absorbing salt air and corroding before they even get to the dealer. The European sold cars are not sent over the ocean and therefore largely do not have the problem. The factory has not corrected this issue since the 2017 introduction and that is why FCA is constantly dragging cars off the road and paying for roadside assistance with no end in sight.

@@fiatofgreenville Not negating effect of ocean travelling, surelly wise to inspect terminals and do cleaning, especially when car shows electrical issues/DTC codes etc. Good video which shows even to complete begineers how to do the job without bothering garage and spending money/time there. Yeah, a lot of EU carmakers manufacture US version in US or Mexico (e.g. VW), so no issues there.
