  • This is not a class on old-school engine diagnosis. The compression gauge takes too much time to use. Using a labscope, easily diagnose a bad cylinder and timing issues using relative compression and pressure transducers. Extensive use of the Picoscope is covered.
    Pete Meier of Motor Age, G "Jerry" Truglia of TST, and Bernie Thompson of ATS all contribute to this presentation.

    You guys are embarrassing these big retail repair shops who are trying to fix car problems by trial and error and parts slapping.. I'm proud of you Sirs!

    That he is...Bernie has a great 4 and 8 channel labscope that has two time bases. Go checkout his stuff at his website automotivetestsolutions. Thanks for watching.

    a good demo to show a low cylinder on cranking is to remove a plug and put your compression tester in without the gauge. The smaller hole in the hose will provide a small amount of compression but not enough to show good.

    This is a very informative class here. I work in a fleet shop. The parent company uses the cheapest internet speed out there. As good and convenient as Pico Scope is, I can't see investing my own money in that regard. I do use my Vantage Pro along with my Solus Edge.

    If one was using the first look sensor in the exhaust pipe for relative pulse measurement, and the vehicle had dual exhaust....would the pipe that had no sensor it it need to be plugged with rags ect...?

    If a repair guy told me I had a bad cylinder based on a diagnostic, I would probe further. I would find it hard to believe that just looking at battery voltage fluctuations while cranking could identify a bad cylinder. Might work, but seems like there could be other factors at play, like the starter motor torque varying with angle, the alternator coming in and out, and other accessories varying. Next step would always have to be a cylinder compression check and/or leak-down test. I'm not sure why it would be hard to install a compression gage in any engine where you can replace the spark plug. Mine has a flexible hose.

      +BillyGrism do a compression test on a 3.5 liter dohc Dodge. you have to remove the intake manifold, no way around it. most dohc ford v6 intake has to come out, toyota v6 intake has to come out. So should i charge you 3 hours to remove the intake and another hour for a compression test? 400 dollars to tell you something that i could have done in 20 minutes and 100 dollars. It's your money.

    One of the only times I’d disagree with you G is on the syncing of EVERY relative compression test. You can have a whole bank with no compression and without a sync it’ll look perfect and sometimes even sound ok as it’s every other cylinder. It’s few and far between but can really bite you in the ass.

    • @TSTseminars
      @TSTseminars  6 років тому

      John you are correct on that but usually repeating the test allows something to show up...once again thanks for your comment.
