Leonard Bernstein/Israel Philharmonic: Brahms Symphony No 1 Live 1973 [Remastered - 2017] MUST WATCH

  • This is probably my favorite live performance of Brahms' 1st symphony, which warranted an attempt to modernize the audio to give the orchestra some more space and depth. Rather than hearing it two-dimensional and somewhat dry in the original video, this one's hopefully more 3-D and closer to the present day in audio. I also lightened up the screen a bit. I think this performance is perfect in sending a message of support for the sake of humanity. Hope you enjoy this.

    As someone who has watched concerts for more than 60 years, I can absolutely claim this is the most emotional and inspiring performance I've seen from a live concert broadcast. This was recorded while Jerusalem was being bombed in 1973 but the audience and orchestra wanted Bernstein to conduct anyway. The reactions of Bernstein and the audience at the end cannot be duplicated. Brahms soared to the heavens in this piece and I've never heard it more passionately played.

      I was in Jerusalem during the ‘73 war. The city was not bombed. The Bernstein concert took place during the summer, before the war. I had the privilege of attending the concert.

      @@leealtschuler8532 How sad it is for me to now learn that everything I've read about this concert over the decades (including the liner notes from the DVD) has been proven dead wrong.

    Fantastic rendition, usually stick to Furtwängler's 1952 recording at Titaniapalast/ Berlin. Honestly, Bernstein along with this orchestra.. He's a giant.

    When I lived in New York in the 80s, I looked for this symphony, having heard it in a Charlton Heston movie entitled, "Counterpoint".
    I found a recording by Bernstein from the 60s. The liner notes said that he had recorded all four movements in one take!
    Since that time, Bernstein has been the master.
    The release of emotion at the end is shattering!

    I am sorry, but is the year correct? I think, this concert was held in 1973 - Yom Kippur war. And what enthusiasm is there in this conducting.

    Idk, I grew up on his dg wpo. May yet come around to his cbs nyp's and ipo's. Aside from his aco's and brso Tristan, the 2 "tests" were the bpo Mahler 9th and the one concert with the Cleveland, actually my favorite American orchestra. After both of which he apparently vowed never to return.

    How odd that the audience do not let the music finish before they begin applauding.
    The contrast in tempi between this and Bernstein's Vienna performance of ten years later (ua-cam.com/video/EGRqIGOAPcE/v-deo.html). Is intriguing. I had always thought that his 'slowing down' was a gradual process, but the difference is quite dramatic, especially in the first movement's famous second subject.

    • @ulfwernernielsen6708
      @ulfwernernielsen6708 4 роки тому +7

      I totally disagree. The way the applauding grew out of the last chord was a fantastic euphoriant experience for me . The performance had already brought me into ecstasy. Listen to the Vladimir Horowitz performance of the Chopin Polonaise Fantasy from 1966 .
