I have confidence this recording would serve as a cornerstone for classical music for years to come. His layered sensitivity, nuanced execution -- nothing is overdone or underdone, everything in the right amount without undermining the artistic integrity of the piece. Most of all, it's completely selfless and devoted to the music. As evident by the principal's facial expressions throughout the entire performance! My beloved uncle passed a few weeks ago. It was his favourite piece of music, ever. He even wrote a book on it and published it last summer. So proud of him, forever. I played it next to him in the hospital, at his funeral and now when I'm studying and missing him so much and I can feel him here with me listening to it. My mentor, my guide, my guardian angel, my best friend, my uncle. Another light has just gone on in heaven.

this young man blows me away with his refined tone and sensibility, all to serve the music . A class of his own. His Korngold concerto here on youtube is another fine example. He gets under my skin, moves me truly. And in both peformances I am also impressed with the orchestras and conductors!

About 15years ago, I heard Stephen play this song in Korea. He was a nameless young violinist and played it much more aggressively and toughly than this. I've never felt such emotion listening to this song played by any other even Heifetz before and after that day. Getting smoother and composed, 4th movement, especially intro, reminds me of that time. I love it!

The cellist, in fact, has a marvelous time throughout the entire piece 27:30. 30:45 hearty clapping with such appreciation...It is nice to see orchestra members enjoying and in harmony with the soloist, conductor and the music.
Ah, Bruch's "4th" Violin Concerto! The most "violiny", if you will, of the Bruchian treasures and, therefore, the most ingratiating, fulfilling and gratifying for the soloist (not to mention the audience!!). The response, both during the performance (facial) and afterward (same cellist's applause was so loud you can hear it above the appreciative din) tells the story. Really, forget the very few minor mistakes and the inexorable tempi in the last movement (Stefan burning through some passages, yet completely persuasive), this is unbridled joy, commitment and love. Oh, to be that cellist...what a life-affirming experience!
Stunning performance. Saw this video on 2015 and still captivated by it now. I hope Stefan will make appearance again sometimes sooner. His amazing talent needs to be shared with the world. Wherever you are, Stefan, and whatever you are doing now, I wish you nothing but the best. Look at disbelief on the face of the cellist starting at 29:30. It culminates a bit later in face saying “I’ll could never be as good as that guy, and I don’t mind a bit”. The way the cellist applauds later shows his respect and admiration. This is something one doesn’t see often in music videos.

This almost 6 years ago. Jackiw plays with the most incredible clarity and feeling. He simply sweeps me away. How is it that he remains relatively obscure?! Why is he not more recognized?!
1- Jackiw has to be considered one of the most exciting soloists in the world right now. Thank you for coming to Denver a few weeks ago (although now my son has the Prokofiev 2 on on constant loop), please come back to CO soon. 2- This orchestra is world class and so is their recording engineer.
My husband and I just listened to the first minute or so of the last movement played by all three masters. The crispness of his playing is the best, but, again, it just needs to be slowed down a little more to take the listener on that up and down thrill of this piece. Will look forward to following his career!!!
Don’t know how else to put it... This performance touches my soul. I come back to it again and again. The amount of space he and the orchestra allow is amazing. So vulnerable and touching. The perfect marriage of incredible soloist, conductor, and orchestra. Absolutely mind-blowing.
I feel like the Finale is one of those good examples of classical being inspiration or the early stages of heavy metal music. I can easily feel the movement of the soloist with the fast paced choppiness in the notes then abruptly slurring multiple notes at once. Pure magic.

This is an amazing rendition of the piece. so full of soul. I listened to other virtuosos and while they are all of course fantastic in their own rights, I ALWAYS come back to this video for Bruch's Scottish Fantasy. I don't know about who is better, but Stefan Jackiw spoke to me with his music.
I just discovered it a few days ago and I couldn't agree with you more, it's absolutely beautiful and pure in expression and brings me to tears every time I listen to it, because of the beauty of the piece itself, but mainly because of the way Jackiw is speaking to us. A truly rare and great gift!

Max Bruch's music is angelical. The voices coming out of the strings are dards transfixing our hearts with their tones full of melancholy, sorrow and lamentation. A heartache rain over one's soul. Most beautiful music. All his creations are beautiful.
Stefan Jackiw has achieved the highest Level of musicianship. Not only has He become one with the Music but he has become music herself to the point of oblivion that there still is such a thing like a body or an Instrument. What an Inspiration.

30:42 Cello dude leans his cello on his left leg and then starts clapping with those large hands. The mike picks-up his claps at various times. Watch his hands and listen for the clapping sound.
In every performance I've heard up 'til now, you know that the fourth movement is difficult because the violinist is clearly working hard. Jackiw plays with reckless abandon without missing a note, making it sound as easy as an elementary etude. I'm impressed.
I keep coming back to this performance to see if it's really as great as my first impression. It is. (It's not just the assistant principal cellist. Keep an eye on the cellist behind him, too.)
he is a heifetz of sorts...impeccable precision in notes with much originality, musicality, style and everything and more of a great violin virtuoso...had not heard about him until today..Got me spellbound and captivated to the 6th sense..

I just love the very Wagnerian orchestral intro (even though Bruch is known as more Brahmsian).

This is an amazing rendition of the piece. so full of soul. I listened to other virtuosos and while they are all of course fantastic in their own rights, I ALWAYS come back to this video for Bruch's Scottish Fantasy. I don't know about who is better, but Stefan Jackiw spoke to me with his music.

I just discovered it a few days ago and I couldn't agree with you more, it's absolutely beautiful and pure in expression and brings me to tears every time I listen to it, because of the beauty of the piece itself, but mainly because of the way Jackiw is speaking to us. A truly rare and great gift!

This is the best Scottish Fantasy ever; I used to love Heifetz's Fantasy the most...but this is a very tough one to ever top by anyone else.

Tasmin Little's recording is also wonderful. I have a feeling Heifetz's fine recording (at least the one with Sargent) is slightly cut.

@@stevepowsinger733 Fantasy, at least in this context, usually denotes a piece of music composed using motifs from other works, and in such a way where the composer builds on top of those motifs in an improvisational-like manner.

Max Bruch's music is angelical. The voices coming out of the strings are dards transfixing our hearts with their tones full of melancholy, sorrow and lamentation. A heartache rain over one's soul. Most beautiful music. All his creations are beautiful.
Stefan Jackiw has achieved the highest Level of musicianship. Not only has He become one with the Music but he has become music herself to the point of oblivion that there still is such a thing like a body or an Instrument. What an Inspiration.

I can only agree with all other comments. Absolutely fantastic. I did know that Stefan Jackiw is a supertalent, but this , so inspiring, is beyond anything I have ever heard. Please Mr Jackiw, make an album including this piece! I would also like to hear Stefan live. Will he be performing in Sweden in the near future? That would be great!

Wow! I can't even imagine a more compelling performance of this work.
In every performance I've heard up 'til now, you know that the fourth movement is difficult because the violinist is clearly working hard. Jackiw plays with reckless abandon without missing a note, making it sound as easy as an elementary etude. I'm impressed.
I keep coming back to this performance to see if it's really as great as my first impression. It is. (It's not just the assistant principal cellist. Keep an eye on the cellist behind him, too.)
he is a heifetz of sorts...impeccable precision in notes with much originality, musicality, style and everything and more of a great violin virtuoso...had not heard about him until today..Got me spellbound and captivated to the 6th sense..

I LOVE Bruch Scottish Fantasy and so does Stephan Jackiw seem to very much. If I could play violin as he does, I would play as he did.
So clean and great unity between soloist and the ensemble, very heartfelt performing!
+Glenn Quader I agree. I think it has a lot to do with the fine Conductor - but I also think the superb clarity of Jackiw's playing probably carries the whole Orchestra with him. But that said, they're great anyway, too!

Absolutely wonderful. I recall reading somewhere that this was one of Heifetz's favourite pieces. He loved the music. I suspect this kid loves it too.
My favorite recording of this. Saw him in Baltimore when he was maybe 12 years old! The slur at 30:25 is awesome

His sensitivity throughout the introduction is just so beautiful and captivating- I keep replaying it over and over again because it just so wonderful! I love the musicality and feeling he has- this is my favorite interpretation of the piece!
