I'm just letting everyone who says "my dreams are crushed" that just because you're watching a video, that may or may not even apply to you, should not crush your "dream". Even from the start, if architecture is your "dream", then you'd pursue it. I think people have this misconception that life is just gonna come easy for them. Challenges make your stronger. Dreams are dreams for a reason, if they were so easy, then we'd have so many successful people. That's why I really admire successful people because even though I don't know them, I know they've been through a lot to get where they are.

I believe the real problem is that architects have forgotten what their profession truly calls for. Most architects nowadays can hardly be called artists. When I think of an artist, I picture someone not afraid to try new forms of expression and having fun with it! Architects are problem solvers and creative thinkers. But most of the architects I've met may have had those attributes...back in architecture school! In the real world, they conform to certain ideals and find their own comfort zones to fall into. But that's not what a good architect should do. The architect is constantly evolving, an ever-changing member of society. All those wonderful things architecture teaches you, when was the last time a practicing architect seriously and sincerely contemplated upon? Most have become slaves to computers and haven't lifted a pencil in ages. The best architect is the one who can balance a pencil on paper alongside a mouse with a program. If the architect fails to evolve with the passage of time, his profession will become extinct, and he will become lost to history...

The fact that architecture is evolving a lot nowadays, integrating a well-being concept much more than in the past, makes me think that architects actually understand how to evolve. I don't see any downsides on using the computer instead of the paper, besides the skill for its own sake, it is also that a form of evolution.

I started studying architecture, whithout knowing all the "not design stuff" BUT I still loved it at the end. To design somthing that works you need all the knowladge of the things that are related to it, otherwise you would be designing fiction. If you like building stuff in general its a great career. You learn a lot about the design process and administration and project managment of course, all that is needed to build a successfull (whatever thing you want), no body designs without knowing how to build it, that means learning all the boring stuff, but in the end you really appreciate it.

As an introvert I can't see myself enjoying the people part, I mean if it is every once or twice a week then it's fine but I need to be left alone with my own thoughts to be able to properly do things... i'm good at making conversation but it really does wear down on me :/ Is this a really social career? if so then I have that and math playing against me if I where to give this a go. Everything else I wouldn't mind at all, I know a lot of work goes behind creating a structure so i'm fine with that, I know I have the passion to want to see the end result and this is what is driving me so hard into this career path, i'm 21! I need a future!

    • @Herbaling
      @Herbaling 9 років тому +5

As a fellow introvert, I'm sceptical as well, BUT. I treat it as something I'd have to simply deal with if I were to be in such profession. Granted, I'm not an architect, but I plan on being one. As difficult as it may be, it's simply something one must learn to cope with. It wouldn't be friend making or anything, it would be simply a business. Obviously, charisma and all would help, but they're not necessary. Just try not to be an asshole and try to be kind to other people, because they're your potential clients.
I personally will most likely have problems with making people recognize me and to spread word about my business, etc. That's the huge issue for me since I have absolutely no idea how one can achieve that.
I know it would sound better if I actually was an architect, but still, I hope I shined some light on your issue.

+Brandon Luco I'm a horrible introvert. just started working this archithingy and i've always been concerned about the negotiation with the client and social stuff... but i guess it can be better if you thing of it as a skill that we previously lacked, soon to be aquired. after all it can't be done without it so with patience it will be dealt with.

    • @alphabah401
      @alphabah401 7 років тому +7

Brandon Luco look at it this way: being an introvert doesn't stop you from speaking to people, it just means that you like hanging out in small groups. Truth is that no person is a true introvert or extrovert. Now you may be shy but shyness comes from a place of insecurity and that can be fixed. If you want to be an architect, go ahead and be one but don't let small knacks stop you

As stated by someone else in the comments section. Every profession is going to have it's "joys & pitfalls". Architecture is a business and as such will include certain challenges associated with doing business. As Bob Dylan once sang, "everyone works for someone". Meaning, the stuff that gets designed also has to get built because someone commissioned it. There's all kinds of challenges that come along with making that happen.

Many can become good at the early stages of the design process. The concept. Then there is getting planning consent. Then Building Control permission then into schedules/production and tender stage. (This is in UK) But even Uk Universities do not really teach what is helpful beyond Planning stage. Yes there is some technical but not enough. But this is probably due to most courses being a BA rather than BSc. Most of their portfolios look like a graphics course until they have had a few years working. But then the work bores them as the job of being an architect is nothing like the graphic heavy architecture design course.

Otherwise your feeling your way in the dark.

I think that could be really true. I am in my first year of arch school and while I really love, love, love all the variety and complexity of my studies, I also think that in the real world things CAN NOT be so dreamy..idealised.."artistic". Truth is, an architect is still a person that works in an office and faces problem-solving on a daily basis. And while we sell dreams and CAN use our creativity when given the opportunity and the financing, not everyone can be Le Corbusier and complete so many villas, public buildings etc. that promote architecture and get to be talk of the town.

The world needs architects. And there are certainly worse choices you could make. That said - I found this video to be spot on. What the video did not touch on are the endless deadlines and endless pressure to deliver projects faster and cheaper. That's when your busy - and when you're not busy you're not getting paid. As the video said, I value the education I've received as a architect, the ideas and many of the people I've been exposed to but after 28 years of practice - I'm going back to school and changing careers. The rewards just aren't worth the struggle for me.

As an architect, we touch all realms of idea. Understand, most people don't even understand how the earth rotates around the sun and why windows are placed to keep natural air flow... let alone real arches, don't be down. Architecture is so refined as a philosophy, artists, and dreamers. Yet, know the business because those who only want profits will try to kill your dream. Yest, be aware. Bring forth your imagination. What is imagined with focus brings it to life. Don't give up on your dreams!

On top of all these reality of Architecture in modern society, what frustrates me is the fact that Architecture is also been taught wrong in many school. Most school focus on constantly exploring the new possibilities to construct buildings differently, with the changes of technology, technique and material. And that is just fine as the science of Architecture do have to improve as they do from the very beginning. The frustration is that the emphasis and the pace of which this aspect of Architecture is been explored, greatly over weighs the fundamental principles of Architecture that should be truly exploited with great effort. For God's sake, Architecture is of Delight, Firmness and Commodity. A building with only firmness and commodity can't simply be called Architecture. I am not saying there is not the slightest delight in contemporary building, but what is presented is not even close to enough, the Aesthetic aspect or rather the Artistic aspect of Architecture is simply not being EXPLOITED. If you were to say that many building form is great, ok, first they are not, secondly, form is merely one small component that makes up the whole of visual pleasure, what happened to the element of color? With thousands of combinations of hue in the world, it seems that we can only recognize so few. What about the texture of not just material itself but that of human crafting. Most importantly, any building should inspire and aspire. I don't want to go into too much here, but form over function is misunderstand, and concept is not always necessary. What is important for most building is the Atmosphere it generates, the feeling and the aspiration it imparts to the beholders. The 3 Principle or rather element of Architecture should be all present in a Architecture for it to be complete. Architecture must be Perfect from Macro Composition down to the most minuscule detail, and that although Delight, Commodity and Firmness are all equal, but Delight is the one that should be placed above all, but all other must also follow through. Just let me Ask you what Architecture is Architecture when it can't even bring visual/ Sensual/ Psychological pleasure which is truly the only element that differs a engineering product of a building from that which is from an Architect. And Ornamentation is not a sin, Ornamentation is a part of the the Art that which makes Architecture, it may not apply to all form of building, but It is a product a skill obtained through exploration in the higher level of Architecture. All in all, the stand alone branch of Science and Art are all constantly trying to improve, yet we seemed to be only applying the best of science but not also to incorporate the best of what Art has to offer. But again, Architecture does reflect the passage of time, as all Architecture were product with their uniquely intended symbolism which conforms to the cultural and society mindset and belief. In the modern era, with the norm being to seek a universal truth that which is neutral to all, that which holds not particular meaning to all, that which will not offend any, of course minimalism and plane Architecture will be the case. But if God allows I will bring back an era of the Golden Age of Architecture, a new quality of Architecture comparable to the greatest of the past, in quality not style.

@RTechstudio ..it's a scale. It's triangular for two reasons. 1. It can have 6 different scales on it and secondly it lies flat and doesn't slip off an angles desk. Usually comes in; imperial- feet and inches or metric - mm and cm corresponding to spaces in meters. You use it only as a tool for measuring drawings on paper and almost never to draw with. Cheers,

I watched this video... I'm a licensed contractor simply looking to separate from the crowd and be articulate with architectural aspects to help bring vision and inspiration to clients unlike no other contractor or cookie-cutter creating architect... My dreams are not crushed at all with this video. Matter of fact, watching 30X40 workshop, using some concepts I've put in place, I was able to land a very big 5 figure project. Don't let someone's video opinion crush anything but your negativity to keep moving forward. You don't have to be an architect to do architectural things. Articulate the market and you will learn to be more open minded about things and you will prevail.

I'm a recent part 2 (masters) graduate in London. This video is very true. Architecture is about realising a vision - drawing is a part of that, but truely being able to achieve your intervention and its purpose is about accepting, perfecting and loving the process from conception to completion.

In my opinion choose becoming an architect. I study architecture, and I must say, that's nothing to be afraid of. Put your time in it, and you will profit skills, others will always lack. No joke. If you manage to finish, you will be extremely resistant to stress, to the lack of sleep and gain experience in the creative field as well. But don't be naive: the industry is in deep shit (especially where I live), you need to be extremely adroit not to suffer later. I don't understand people, who see

For those of you that have lost interest immediately after watching this video ; y'all have got to realise that there is no such thing as the perfect business. All businesses, and careers have downfalls . Most people who contribute towards anything don't become highly successful, as the select few does. That's why you must be inspired greatly, if you want to have the opportunity to become great . You are always going to experience hardship, but it's totally up to you on how your going to deal with that situation. The better you deal with hard situations, the more successful you'll become. No successful individual had anything easy. They just never really share all the tough times often, unless you start getting to know them well enough.

I've taken fine arts as my undergraduate degree and I gotta say, i think architecture might really be for me. I was interested in so many things and craved more technical and logical thinking that fine arts left me unmotivated and uninspired. I find the anything goes factor in art ( like poop in a can) was too easy. I like working within limits, limits set by things outside my own mind.

Being an architect is very hard, long hours of work, plenty of sleepless nights, little salary for newly grads and employees. But one of the best thing I learned in Architecture is that "AN ARCHITECT KNOWS SOMETHING ABOUT EVERYTHING". Gaining knowledge is very important to start our own business.
Architects should not just be an employee forever,we should acquire our own projects, establish a name, and we could make good profit actually....

Seriously people i am sick and tired of all you complaining about how difficult is to study architecture and how a demanding profession it is and how you'll end up unemployed and blah blah blah.. Because you didn't make an informed decision, that's your problem. Architecture can be great and very rewarding if YOU are GREAT. If you are not capable of doing this job, quit. It takes a lot of effort and talent to be an architect.

I am good a drawing, i am creative, and im pretty good at math, but i am not of the cultured type and could care less about that history. The main reason i want to be involved in construction is to have the creative skill and be able to know a house inside out, and also not needing to spend money on everything, like a do it yourself kind of person, any recommendations or career options?

Truth is that no person is a true introvert or extrovert. Now you may be shy but shyness comes from a place of insecurity and that can be fixed. If you want to be an architect, go ahead and be one but don't let small knacks stop you

It's hard to be an Architect. Even though you are a great designer if you can't have a great network and business strategy and some luck you can't be as successful as the famous ones.. When you are an Architect you have tiny time to sleep and relax because there are a lot of things going on to being an Architect. When you think you are going to relax and lie down in a nice couch, then you started thinking about some designs and some ideas for your incoming or on going project and you really can't stop it no matter what. It's lifetime dedication or nothing. If you want to be an architect to have a better paying job, don't even dare think about it. If you want to become an architect because it's what your heart desires no matter what, then you may consider.

There is nothing wrong with asking on a UA-cam page. I learned a lot of things from other industries on youtube and facebook pages. Some might not want to share info, but if you are patient enough you can piece enough jigsaws to guess the final picture. Who does the design? You need to ask what is "design" defined as? Because the engineer, the architect, the client, the brand manager, the facade specialist, even the fire/zoning code official will all claim a piece of "design".

It is true, as a employee we might not have a great salary. But as an entrepreneur, you will have to work harder but there is a great chance of winning money doing what you love (design, construction, real estate, urbanism). If you like to check some examples, check Orange Investments, Hines, or investigate on the creators of great construction companies. Don't get frustrated, we have control over the architecture as we can adapt to the future or create a new better one. Cheers!

For those that want to design their own buildings and not just draw what is dictated by those higher up who get to design the buildings, open your own practice. Or get higher up the food chain in one that you are already in.
For those wanting to just stick to drawing though, may i recommend being an Architectural Technician. A tech draws and documents the plans, including details. Great job for those who love technical drafting and love to know the nuts and bolts of how buildings go together.

When I was in High School a few of my classmates tell me to take-up Architecture. I didn't do any reaserch about it. I took a different course. My heart belongs to Art. I am a natural born artists. My vision of myself is not of my course nor architeture. Why am K saying this? Well, children has to be taught of the REAL DEAL. Like in this one, Architecture is not about designing. If you have a dream KNOW what else you mst know and be smarter than the rest, commit no big mistake. Here, we learned what a architetc student or those intersted that YOU DEAL with various task which do not involve design but "YOU" and others. It is like designing your life, you make a mistake then correct it or else it may never be corrected and everything goes down with you. In college I learned and realized that YOU ARE BEING TAUGHT or taught FACTS and not how everrything in that field works. There is a cetain amount shock. Now, millenials are somehow not as how the old once when they were young. That is a big problem if those milenials brig the Bad Attitude they have developed in this ine of work. They maybe be confused due to lifes many choices and voices, be out of focused and failed at the end and have a hard time to stand up...

I want to be a traditional architect but most architects are sadly influenced by their idea of a modern and soulless utopia where originality is demanded from each individual more than actual aesthetic design quality. When I look at older buildings I see designs created by architects who embraced a cultural identity, I see forms that reflect the beauty of nature. The last of the great architectural styles was art deco, based on the beauty of streamlined forms and an emphasis on height, this style was used to build some of the best skyscrapers and most colorful houses that flowed with optimism. Do forgive my rant, I just want to know if the course is right for me.

Just a thought for folks (especially those who seem to be current or prospective students) talking about dreams being crushed: I'd be willing to wager that, not far from wherever you're learning to design buildings, there's another student in a classroom learning how to run a business.
It might not help much if you need to cut your teeth and learn the ropes by working with an established firm. But if you want to strike out on your own so you can do design work but you don't want to worry about business, think about tweaking your plan to include seeking out someone who wants to run an office, do sales, do research, etc, but who needs a product!
A successful company needs a good product and good business management. There's nothing that says the same person needs to handle both of those things.

You've probably found the answer to this by now, but I'll tell you anyway. You tape 2 small, thin washers to the underside of your T-square at each end where they dont touch the paper. They raise the blade up off the paper a bit. You also put small pieces of tape, 3 layers thick to the underside of the corners of your triangles. That works well, but I'll tell you what I do to avoid smudges, I use CAD. I've never smudged a thing since I started using CAD. ; )
