I contacted WDR many years ago when I first heard about these tracks as they were from the one hour live televised Rockpalast concert we did for them back then, but WDR had lost the master video in their tape store. These five tracks from the TV concert were included in a WDR breakfast discussion show that was broadcast a few days after the Rockpalast show. Very un-German I thought at the time!

I loved this band, the best of pub rock, vastly underrated and appreciated.

I'm sure I'm one of the few Americans who has all the Brinsley's vinyl albums but I'd never heard them do "Love Is Gone" before! I knew that from Carlene Carter's definitive version on her first lp. but it's cool to hear this earlier rendition! If I ever get stranded on a desert island, two of the 100 Albums I'm gonna have with me are "Nervous on the Road" and "The New Favourites Of..." I'll have Graham Parker's first two as well, and maybe even that 1st American Ducks Deluxe record. Pub rock never made it in America, but it was a great antidote to all that ELP, Yes, LZ, PF, stuff that I hated then and hate even more now!

Saw them live many a time, always great. Love that short scale bass that Nick is playing here.

Of course I love Nick Lowe, Ian Gomm, and Brinsley Schwarz, but the more I see their videos, the more I understand how critical Bob Andrews was to this brilliant band.

Well said-he is brilliant.I love Billy’s style of drumming.
My best ever gig was the bands very last performance-still think about it after nearly fifty years

Yeah, the live version of Peace, Love, and Understanding is where Costello was inspired to cover it, but I never thought his version was quite right.

Yeah, I've been listening to these guys starting with "Silver Pistol" and here i am now, looking for it now that i'm a new geezer soon comin' of age. I like the song, "Rockin' Chair, ever sine I was an old Kid. "Well, a bit of that persists, especially now that i hear it, once again." As far as The Music" Greatest respect to the musical contributions of each of the members of Brinsley Schwarz" His tasteful lead guitar, the ever present backbone drummer Ian Rankin, Bob Andrews, whose presence is also not usually noted but some are more announced than others, such as Nick Lowe's compositions. This band is the Personification of that age-old Cliche: The Sum Is More Than It's Parts. Just listen to it.

Seen this lot in more less the same year 1975ish at Warwick University. Still reckon it was one the best 5 gigs I've ever been to and I've been to a lot. Still remember them taking the piss out of themselves with the little guitar choreography to "Peace, Love & Understanding" same as they did here.

I've got all those early albums - a shame that they all had to go in different directions to get the recognition they deserved.

+D'Ascoyne I always thought that, too -- The Band and Flying Burrito Bros.

D'Ascoyne Absolutely - Nick admitted this in an interview with Jools Holland a few years back. But for me some of their performances transcend The Band.

I like Elvis' version better as he put a couple more chords in the break.
Everyone but the drummer getting a turn up front, which brings up the question: who sang what on "Despite It All" aside from Nick on "Country Girl" and "Love Song?"

    • @doctoralana4445

+Lefty Bass I dunno, I think it looks ok - wonder what happened to his regular P-bass.? I'm also glad to see Nick maintaining a tradition of wearing knitwear on stage.
