"The State Needs To BUTT OUT!" - Isabel Oakeshott HITS OUT At Potential Smacking Ban

  • Laws must be changed to ensure smacking a child is not seen as acceptable in any circumstances, paediatricians have urged.
The current law in England and Northern Ireland has created “grey areas” which mean there is sometimes a defence to physical punishment, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) said.
Wales made any type of corporal punishment, including smacking, hitting, slapping and shaking illegal in March 2022, while Scotland had already introduced a similar ban in November 2020.
The RCPCH said amendments to the Children Act 2004 for England and the Law Reform Order 2006 for Northern Ireland “to remove the ‘reasonable punishment’ defence from all UK law are long overdue”.
Its report on the issue argued that, ahead of a general election, this was a time for all political parties to “make meaningful commitments on this important children’s rights issue”.
Professor Andrew Rowland, a consultant paediatrician and RCPCH officer for child protection, said: “The laws around physical punishment as they stand are unjust and dangerously vague.”
TalkTV’s Isabel Oakeshott berates politicians over the potential ban, saying she 'does not want the long arm of government telling me what I can do as a mother.'
“Can the state just butt out of our homes!?”

Are there huge numbers of children arriving in A&E with terrible injuries from having their bottom smacked ? No of course there aren't, for goodness sake leave the parents alone.

Exactly. The sort of parents who batter their children will do it any way.

This mamby pamby approach is the reason why there is zero discipline in schools, in the home and in society in general, kids run amok and do whatever the hell they like, zero deterrent and zero punishment equals zero consequences for ones actions!

In those rare cases where they do end up in A&E, there are already laws on our books such as abuse and assault to deal with it. We don't need more laws.

Discipline is good, abuse is different. The government should do their jobs and stop creating a nanny state

If my toddler ran towards a busy road, blissfully unaware of the devastating consequences, a short quick pat on the backside, that split second of fear in my eyes', would be remembered and the act of a smack would be understood to be out of love and concern, not abuse.

The moment you register your child's birth you have already signed away your child to the state...

I would draw the line at corporal punishment in schools. However, parents should be left to parent and not be criminalised if they administer a light smack on the back of the hand or backside of their child if the child runs into a busy street or causes a scene in the supermarket. Those who would seek to physically abuse their kids will do that anyway. This law won’t prevent that. All it will do is criminalise wholly loving, well-meaning parents from disciplining their child as they choose.

    @elegantrebel 14 днів тому +1

if parents say their kids need to be hit to keep them in line... then schools should be able to use corporal punishment too.
    but...
If the school is expected to discipline your children without hitting them.. then you as a parent should also be able to discipline without hitting them.

Doctors are no more qualified to dictate policy on this than the local postman, window cleaner or roofing contractor. It's a matter for parents to decide.

Ridiculous nanny stateism from our completely out of touch politicians. Children need discipline and structure in their lives which might occasionally require physical chastisement and parents should not be criminalized for this. There are already multiple laws to deal with those parents who overdo it and cross the line into abuse or assault.

BIT OF A LONG POST I live in wales and this Happened to my partner last summer my 5 yr old told her teacher her dad smacked her and social services turned up at my house and made my partner leave our house for a minimum of 2 weeks for them to investigate the allegations…FROM A 5 YEAR OLD KID. They then ignored every phone call off him asking when he could come back and only answered after he left a voicemail telling them it’s been 14 days I haven’t heard anything off you so I’m going home. Turns out the “smack” off her dad was because she was holding our brand new 9 week old kitten by his neck and wouldn’t let go so he tapped her hand to stop her, which they still weren’t happy about. Then they got nasty with me because my 5 yr old apparently overheard my 9 year old daughter telling me when she stayed over her dads last week he got angry with her and strangled her. My 9 yr old literally said it out the blue to me in front of my 5 yr old and social services were absolutely disgusted that my 5 ye old head it…not that a 9 yr old got choked by her dad, 3:01 they were more concerned that a 5 yr old heard it. They want me to take her to therapy for overhearing it. HAHAHAH they are an absolute joke. I started ignoring there calls and they’ve seen to have got bored and left us alone for about a year now. I was told they try and stick to any family they get involved with as long as possible because if there is no cases, there is no work and no work=no jobs for them. Morons
