- Comparison of MAX's HERO Mode with GoPro's widest ever mode: MAX SuperView against HERO8. I am very excited to use HERO Mode going forward for all of my POV shots because of the stability, super wide angle, and horizon leveling. There's no 360 shot in this video - HERO mode records only one lens, just like a normal GoPro, to standard GoPro video files.
You can shoot HERO Mode up to 1440P at 60FPS. It is lower resolution but the immersive wide angle + stabilized shot and impressive image quality out of MAX will steer me to use this camera over higher resolution alternatives with a narrower FOV.
...Plus it's all getting watched on a phone anyway who are we kidding :)
Shot all cameras in GoPro color with sharpness set to 'Low'. No color or stabilization has been added in post.

When stabilization is at its maximum the POV of the GPMax is awesome. If it was in 4K it would decimate all.

The weird thing is that the Hero 7 footgae shows literally no movement from your helmet but the footage in front of you is shaky
The max and hero 8 show shaky head footage but otherwise smooth footage in front of you

Great comparison! I was worried about the Max's detail compared to the 8, but this video shows that the Max is clearly capable of producing great looking footage. It's close enough for me and the colors actually seem a little better? Very excited to start experiment with reframing 360 footage.

Good comparison. I think their are plus and minuses of all three it all comes down to settings. All are very watchable.
Great comparison, Abe! Both cameras did really well! Hero8 had better stabilization than I expected, while MAX had better quality than I expected. Both held their own for stabilization and image quality!

Great comparison! Does hypersmooth 2.0 low mean is set on ON or HIGH ? Anyway MAX hypersmooth is amazing but hero 7 with stabilization set on OFF is surprised me 😯
The Stabilization on the MAX is insane, compared to the HERO8. And even that is insane.
I'd love to see some comparisons between the Fusion and the MAX, since the Fusion now gets more affordable.
Yeah I do note that he has stabilization set to low vs Max on the Max, so the 8 may yet have some room for improvement. Still awesome performance from both in this vid.

4k smorekay. This Max is such a more immersive experience and who needs 4k if you cant even see the amount of trail the max captures. Plus the stabilization is phenomenal and the added 360 is icing on the cake.

I need to see this on a big screen TV, because the differences seem pretty subtle on my laptop (not sure how anyone would spot them on a phone). It's good to know about that non-cropping aspect of the Max even in high stability mode. Did you use the plastic covers on the Max? I'm gonna guess the answer is "no" since they have an impact on image quality, but that was definitely an activity with a high risk of falling.
Could you please show us how you mount the MAX on stuff to get nice 360 footage ? I feel like there has to be more thought into it compared to a "Normal" hero 8 in terms of stitching .. maybe on a mtb" helmet, motorcycle, car etc.

Thank you for the comparisons! They've conquered stabilization, it looks amazing! Now they need to conquer image quality, I hope Hero 9 has a 1"sensor for better stills and low light shots. That's where GoPro is still lacking.
G3ORGE it’s easy to say just put a 1” sensor in but it’s much more complicated than that from an optics and engineering path. There’s a reason there are no wide angle 1” sensor small cameras, the length of the lens would more than double the depth of the camera, and you wouldn’t be able to have anything in focus under 2 or 3 feet so you’d need variable focus. Hoping to see some advancement in technology but physics is a hard thing to overcome.

so gopro max has hero mode on 1440p 30fps , and gopro hero 9 can shoot it 2,7k 60fps ( with max lens ) in superview , am i correct? so for horizontal leveling in superview go pro 9 has better resolution and 60fps? can you confirm?

Yes, getting the Max soon. problem is, im really slow in mountain biking, will it makes me even looked slower with hypersmooth 2.0? (Anyways doesnt matter, just do what makes u happy), just curious.
Jim Son the wider the lens makes anything feel faster, so you should be goood!

Why were there no comparison with Gopro 8 "superwide" mode? or is that what he meant with "wide"? still, max looks like you can get those extra mm of FOV which is so nice, so u can see more of the trail and the bike!

happens in horizontal when you take turns that your image does not follow the curve but remains horizontal

Can you do a go pro hero max in it's horizontal stabilization on a chin mount? Non vertical so standard orientation. Then compare it to a chest mounted gimble. And for yolo's sake. Chest mounted gimble with hero max with horizontal stabilization

Steroid Star because I was comparing the field of view mostly, and you can’t do high with 4:3 aspect ratio unfortunately. I actually might have one test where I did high vs. max hyper but I remember it looking very similar in terms of stabilization.

gunfire12321 stabilization is fine. Just not really necessary for me. I use 360 for stuff like follow cam etc. Biking I generally just want to look down the trail. Less post work (none)

I noticed you had the 8 on HS low....it would have been good to see HS high on the 8 to compare

Superview vs max superview?
Max is literally 360
Matteo Cervelli Shooting in wide in any of the 4:3 modes in HERO8 is the same wide view as superview, superview simply puts it into a 16:9 frame !
When I use superview mode in my hero 8 I have more side view. In 4:3 I have more visual in height of the frame.
Especially in chest mout With superview if you position the GoPro at the right angle the most of action is in the frame.
4:3 allows more adjustment in post.

Go for the max. You can show your viewers way more of your surroundings. I use both action cam and 360. My viewers love it when I pan around. 1440p is good enough.
