I think this will be the latest upgrade cycle for B-52s. Palletized missiles (Rapid Dragon) have changed the rules of the game. Any cargo plane can now be used as a strike/bomber platform. C-130s and C-17s are now effectively cruise missile bombers. Future cargo planes will be designed and built with this in mind: for both logistics and strike missions. With this development, B-52 has become a 'single use' platform since it cannot fly logistics missions, and therefore an expensive one. They will be finally allowed to retire.
