I am a 51 year old white man, my crew growing up was into Punk Rock, Metal, and Old-Skool Hip-Hop! KRS-ONE was a hero to us!! We protested Racism and Police Violence, and we really thought we would change something. Sadly, it's worse today, and the world is moving backwards. I don't see the youth today out there screaming and yelling at the beast!! I am so happy to see you guys getting it, Thanks
Overseer is the plantation manager he was in charge of the slaves an the plantation. Including administering justice hash justice. That is why krs1 makes the comparison
Nope. The police actually are a much more advanced and systemic version of the plantation overseer. Do you actually believe that they are to uphold the law. No their job is to protect property and "keep order". We are assets, sources of labor and income. That is our real value. This song was true then. It's still true now. And pick up a book. This info isn't hard to find. He over simplified it for the song. Police are the overseers of the municipality they "project and serve". Smdh
Living legend... This album "Return of the Boom Bap" is one of my favorite KRS ONE albums. He has over a dozen albums (16, I think) and STILL making music and doing live shows. He's probably the most involved rapper ever in the game. For life, for real.
White dude, American History teacher here. I reference this song when I’m lecturing to my classes about plantation life and slavery. The Officer -> Overseer lyric is deep. I grew up and learned about black culture on this music. Saw BDP, PE, Kane, Rakim and all of these rap gods in concert when I was in HS and College. So glad I did. Hip Hop concerts in the 80’ and 90’s were unreal. Every artist was dropping entire albums with the best songs they could release. KRS-One is a FABULOUS MC.
1994 me & my crew riding around Manhattan in about 3 cars deep playing this joint all together at once, so it's loud as fck,you can feel & hear the bass for blocks, we at a red light & who pulls up next to us in a jeep, KRS & his crew, we started wildin the fck out!!! He got a kick out of us playing his joint in 3 cars super loud &:bopping our heads crazzzyyyyy,I'll never forget that
His name is literally… K.R.S.ONE… Meaning… “knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone”. My favorite Rapper of all time (not because I’m from the Bronx). ❤🔥🔥🔥
KRS One is connecting the historical facts of the plantation “Overseer’s “role and the police along with the police origin as slave patrol. Police corruption and brutality. Also, KRS One is Jamaican and has many flow switches! He’s the Father of Edutainment Music! Always has a message. Keep up the great content. Keep reviewing music with conscious content.
Naw, I think most of us are happy to see younger generations enjoying our generation of music. Growing up, I listened to tons of music from before I was born. Music is timeless. But, feels like nowadays lot of people aren't interested in anything more than a year or two old - if even that.
KRS-1 WAS A "TRUE MASTER" AT COMBINING LYRICISM, FLOW & AT THE SAME TIME GIVING YOU A "LESSON". THAT'S WHY HE IS KNOWN AS THE "TEACHA". IF YOU WANT TO CHECK OUT A POSITIVE SONG & VIDEO THAT WAS SPEARHEADED BY KRS-1, CHECK OUT: SELF DESTRUCTION- STOP THE VIOLENCE MOVEMENT. NOT ONLY WILL YOU RECEIVE A GOOD MESSAGE BUT IT WILL EXPOSE YOU TO MORE MC'S AS WELL.✊🏾
Glad yall young fellas recognize a pure Hip Hop Genius, and to quote KRS, "I'm not number 1, oh I'm sorry I lied, I'm #1,2,3,4 and 5" and he right. KRS has always been my #1 favorite MC since 1988 and my #1 has never changed in those 38years. Yall should listen to The Bridge is Over, Why is that, You must learn the remix, he got so many classics, but those are legendary ones to start with there.
KRS is in most rappers top 5. He is 1 of the greatest MCs and freestyles of all time. He's still doing his thing. Check out his latest project. The song called THE BEGINNING! STRAIGHT FIRE 🔥
You guys should react to "Self Destruction" it's an EPIC collaborative project with SOOO many of the most popular hip-hop artists of the late 80s. It has an excellent message too.
I’d have to say KRS has the most diverse flows out of any MCs in history. You gotta check all his albums. He has about 23 albums. Yes twenty three! And he STILL is creating and doing live shows today with more energy than most young kids. Truly one of a kind.
I’m glad that some of the young people understand what he was trying to tell us years ago instead of the black community concentrating on killing one another we should be empowering each other with the messages that this man presents to us.
You guys are the truth I am you grandparents age and is it good to see the young ppl who never heard the rap from back in the day. Check out A Tribes Call Quest the song SCENARIO.
Really appreciate you guys appreciate your "true Skool" Hip Hop reactions. You guiys have a great EAR hor Real Hip Hop! Keep It up! This is "BC" from Toronto Canada. Make sure you check out NAS , BOOT CAMP CLICK, SPECIAL ED and definatley more KRS!
krs was spitting, todays hip hop and rap doesn't focus that much on social issues, it focuses on being capitalistic and gaining wealth and i've got a hunch that was planned upfront
I appreciate that you appreciate this song this song it Was huge when I was young dealing with things in society All the message in his songs brought me to the light
Take the usual names ppl call G.O.A.T and their goat will say KRS is one of their favourites .He is definitely a candidate for the real G.O.A.T label of rap.
I love that you young guys get it!!! KRS ONE and PUBLIC ENEMY are My Top 2 Hip Hop acts. Followed by Eric B and Rakim (3) and Pete Rock & C L Smooth (4). 😎😎😎
I grew up around the Mitchell Houses in the South Bronx, the same area KRS-One is from, and believe me, the police had every right to act the way they did. It was a goddamn war zone of relentless crime and filth. I can only imagine what it would have been like without the police.
This song is so 🔥🔥🔥. "Beast" is what we used to call the police in NYC in the 80s and 90s I think the kids call police "12" today. We used to call them "Five-0"😀😀😀 too
If you noticed KSR One, as well as Rakim did not curse, it's because these rappers were not at a loss of words. Knowledge was key. These people were intelligent. A lit of rappers today just want to be seen. They curse because intelligence is missing and talent. Please bring this back!!!
I don't know if you gentlemen do full album reactions but the album( Return of the Boom Bap) that this track is from is worthy of it not only lyrically but also DJ Premier's production is stellar ,
Keep in mind when he made this a lot of NYC police were getting indicted for working for drug gangs. They would rob one gang, take the money then sell the dogs to another gang. Crazy crazy era.
30 years and nothing fucking changed. We need more music with a message today, more musicians with a conscience. Nice reaction anyway! If you haven't checked them out yet go do some Dead Prez! that would be great. another group with something to say!
What he was saying is still happening now 2023. Goddie Mob Cell Therapy is another banger to check out for y’all younger generation. What they said over twenty years ago is also relevant today.
KRS-ONE was and is so far ahead of everything. I want to focus on the line about NYPD selling crack. its just 1% of the song.... That's a bold accusation but 30 yrs later when its pretty much public record how corrupt and criminal the nypd was at the time... its damn impressive how KRS delivered this one line, its really hard to describe.
He's not called The Teacha for nothing. I grew up as a white kid in Louisville, Kentucky in the 80s/90s and he certainly kicked knowledge to me. KRS-One and Chuck D from Public Enemy. As long as the younger generation listens to KRS, the world is in good hands.
KRS One’s parents would have been the civil rights generation. His grandparents probably were the first generation or second generation out of slavery. Every generation has to deal with police brutality.
He was showing you the similarity between the plantation overseer and nowadays what they call and officer that's why you said overseer overseer overseer officer officer officer officer
I am a 51 year old white man, my crew growing up was into Punk Rock, Metal, and Old-Skool Hip-Hop! KRS-ONE was a hero to us!! I consider guys like KRS 1 and Chuck D to be punk… they check all the boxes and rep what punk was about.

He is of Jamaican roots, that's why he switches to chanting from time to time...
You Must Learn (video version) is another deep lesson song.
now the fba wants to cut their ties with the jamaicans who are integral to the growth of hiphop...blame tariq nasheed for this evil...
KRS-One is still making albums and touring the world today. I just saw him recently in London. One of the best live performers in music.
His live shows are incredible.
Yep real hip hop
I’d love to checkout one of his history of HipHop lectures
That’s why he goes by KRS ONE. It stands for Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone

I saw KRS-One in the early 2000s. Super diverse crowd. The power went out midway thru and he continued acapella and simply kicked his knowledge.
