  • This is the alternator to my 97 Cadillac DeVille Concours being removed through the bottom of the car. Lots of descriptions, but this is how you actually have to turn it to get it out. Please pardon my language.

    Dude. You are STILL helping people with this vid. I'm a complete amateur when it comes to auto repairs and was cringing at what had to be done to get this out through the top. Found this vid and tried it. Only took about an hour and a half, and I'm a novice at all this! You saved me a lot of time and, as many have mentioned, busted knuckles. Thanks for posting this vid!

    I turned it the other way and it slid right out with no trouble other than a little resistance from the hoses. I unbolted it, and rotated the 'face' side (with the two electric hookups) 90 degrees, so that it was facing down/ the hole, and it was no trouble. Went back the same way with a new one. Only trouble I had was getting that one bolted in, 2/3 bolts would catch thread, but not the third. I recommend starting with the smaller bolt on the back, and then doing the other two at the same time.

      Yes it can be but its not the only engine to be this way. There is always something that is knuckle buster on every engine ever made. Its just the shear size of this engine that makes it look hard to do.

    Just took my Alternator out of my 96 Eldorado Northstar! Mine came out easier once I realized that there is a frame access panel... took the four ten millimeter bolts out and alternator damn near fell out! These guys are rt! No need to take radiator out at all!

      @mellowkoopa  10 років тому +1

      I've done this one more time since this video and really, with the right twist, it popped right out! The radiator wouldn't have made the twist any easier. Just falls out!

      Denver Lancaster in a older comment you was saying you ran a shorter belt when your ac compressor clutch seized. do you remember what belt you used ? and did it fit with the AC compressor still there? mine is also seized up but i want to just bypass it

    • @mellowkoopa

      I don't recall exactly, I took a small tape measure and ran it through all the things to get the length.

      footed16 I don't recall exactly, I took a small tape measure and ran it through all the things to get the length. and it did fit without any hassle. I made it from Texas to CO without taking the ac compressor or anything.

      Hey better late tthen never right? I totally forgot about it, but i remember cause that motor is a total pain in the a$$! It took me about half an hour of wiggling to get it out and i did loosen the radiator to get a little extra room (dont know that it actually helped but in my head it did) if i remember the mechaninc wanted to charge hime 3400.00 to change it!

    I just did one today with my small mobile repair business. It will come out but go slow to not damage the radiator. Mine pretty much fell out by spinning the alternator were the base is facing the ground and of course the drive pulley will be facing up if your under the car

    I did it this weekend on a 1996 deville 4.6L. Take wire plug loose, remove radiator fan (2 bolts) and you can get it out without too much headache. Still a real pain as far as alternators go, but way easier than pulling the radiator!

  • @mellowkoopa
    @mellowkoopa  12 років тому +1

    Battery out first! Then whatever you can get off the side would be good. Just remember how it all goes back together. Label nuts. Going to need a 7, 10, and 13mm sockets, and maybe a 10mm wrench. Plate on the bottom where the alternator comes out. As pointed out before, radiator coming out might give you room, but isn't necessary. Best to come out the bottom. In google search: "Remove Install 97 Northstar Alternator" and you will get a plethora of information. Good luck.

    no leak! but the ac compressor clutch seized up driving home from Texas. Ended up buying a shorter serpentine belt and looped it around everything but the compressor to get home.

  • @mellowkoopa
    @mellowkoopa  8 років тому

    plate and a lot of wires. bolts holding the thing in. my ac clutch seized driving down the road a couple months after this. I was able to run a belt through the engine and skip the AC all together. that was a good idea.

      This is not the only engine with the alternator mounted where it is. There are numerous other engines with alternators mounted in places that are much harder to get out. It's mounted in a good place but its just the shear size of the engine that makes it seem hard to get at. These are excellent engines and I have family that helped build these engines in Livonia Michigan.

    Radiator might have been a good idea for a first time, but now that I know how to turn it putting the new one back in took no time at all. And the radiator wasn't actually an issue except turning the alt. at the very end. I understand the Aurora runs on L47 (offshoot of N*)? Would love to play with one of those. I will give it a second look next time I need to do it, but I can't really imagine a benefit besides another inch for a larger ratchet.

      Did you pull the engine out from the top or out the bottom of the car?? A lot of people don't realize that the engine can be pulled straight up disconnected from the transmission and makes it much easier to work on. Dropping the sub frame is the hard way.

    • @starxlr7863

      Hondo T Well your talking to someone that had family in making these cars and also I know one someone that was on the Northstar design team. The only reason that its a little more difficult to get your hands in places is mainly because of the size of the motor. It really takes up a lot of space being a 32 valve V8. It's the same with Lincoln and the rest.

      well yes, this time, what about all the novices trying to do this? or next time when you get one thats weak from age or whatever...its not a good practice to be hitting the radiator with parts is what im saying. In my opinion its one of those thought process that separates professionals from diy or someone thats just trying to get er done as quick and cheaply as possible. I prefer a mechanic that takes the appropriate amount of time to do things, esp on a Cadillac where its very easy to end up costing yourself extra $ and time by busting something by trying to fix something.
