  • If you have had to add coolant , then check for head gasket leak first . Cadillac Misses at idle ,P0300 ,Northstar This Cadillac DTS has a misfire only at idle . I hooked the scanner up and saw a p0300 code . The fuel trims seemed just a little high at idle but not over 10 . I looked at misfire counts to see which cylinders on this Cadillac DTS ,Northstar was missing . #1 cylinder on this Northstar engine was showing the misfires Any thing above idle the Cadillac ran fine so i started looking for a vacuum leak. What i found was the end of the pvc hose that hooks to intake was leaking. We also replaced the intake boot and intake gaskets . The boot is known to go bad so we just went ahead and changed it. If you find one bad vacuum hose be sure to check all the rest for they are probably just as old .

Absolutely a perfect video, just finished my '03 DeVille and it went extremely smooth. Both the "L" shaped vacuum boot and the Throttle body to Intake housing were badly torn. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You............The Caddy dealer here wanted over $600.00 to do the job.........parts cost just about $60. Complete in about 3 hours.

Bro I swear to god, I fucking love you. I’ve went to mechanics, to countless Cadillac dealerships and they tried getting me to change my spark plugs twice, I did once. And then they suggested an upper engine cleaning which I did. I kept getting a misfire on cuclinder 5, and still am. I’m about to go see if my issue was a vacuum leak!!!!!! Ur a goddam genius!!

Also , does it leak any coolant , do you ever have to add coolant . Leaking head gasket is another thing that can cause a miss . But vacuum leaks are very common on them . Hope you get it sorted out

This was an Excellent video. One of the best on UA-cam!!! You helped me out greatly!!! I have an 05 deville. Similar setup as your car here. I too was getting the same code reading of misfiring and running rough. The rough running was due to the crankcase ventilation tube with that little rubber elbow that goes into the intake manifold behind the power steering pump like I saw in your video here. It was completely broken off which is why it was running so badly. I also replaced all 8 spark plugs with new ACdelco iranium plugs which solved the misfiring code. They were the original plugs since new. My car runs perfectly now. No problems whatsoever. Thanks again

Great video. I'm about to replace all the vacuum elbows and throttle boot on my daughter's Cadillac DeVille Concours. I'll give you a tip my father would do and I learned it from him. @wtbm123  4 роки тому +1

@@Tom-wq2mz Those engines are known for head gaskets , So if leaking into a cylinder it can cause a miss . If you are leaking coolant i would look into that first . Some when shut off hot , the pressure in cooling system will push coolant in cylinder . then will miss a lot next time started . If using much coolant , sometimes can look at spark plugs and tell witch cylinder . Some the threads in the block let go and let head bolt loosen up . If threads in block is bad , they make inserts to fix the holes . So if they come in and customer is adding coolant , i start looking for a bad head gasket . May be able to pressure test the coolant system .

Great video for all the detailed points. right on the problem. my Cad has the exact the same problem, the rubber boot at turn broke. My thinking: instead of going thru all these dissembling and removal of lines, if I could just somehow remove the left over rubber boot, and wrap with some sort of fabric and drip epoxy glue to seal the joint. all these effort of removing stuff is to reach this bent joint anyway. I know the space is tight in there, you would need a lot of patience to do surgery type operation...

The elbow was the issue . not sure if intake was actually leaking but the one gasket looked different than the others . Prying with screw driver was bending the elbow and closing off the small hole. The intake boot was cheap and fairly easy to change , so because they are known to have issues ,and this is a hi millage car we decided to change it too.

Very good and easy to follow, and you did a very thorough job, and good
clear explanation here. I have to replace the intake coupling ( rubber boot)
as well in my 2001 Olds Aurora, which has a Northstar Engine in it as well,
it's just a little bit smaller than the Cadillac engine. Looks like a complex
job, and I'll need an expert mechanic like you to do it. Right now my car
will buck while coming to a stop, and I get mild engine surges, causing the
engine's idle to race up a bit. It's likely the intake plenum ( boot) or idle air
control valve by speaking with other Aurora owners. All Northstar Engines.
As a mechanic, do you think DEXCOOL coolant is OK for these Northstar
Engines ? as I heard the Dexcool can deteriorate the rubber or nylon gaskets.
I'm thinking of draining the system, and going with a different type of coolant,
but some people have a great experience with DEXCOOL and others not. I'm
a little confused on this issue, and would love your opinion on it. I've read that
the DEXCOOL in lower end models of GM can deteriorate the head gaskets,
and this cause a leak. My car does leak a bit of Coolant, maybe 1/4 pint in a
year. I was thinking it's from the water pump, and can see the coolant in the
snow. Would really like your opinion of this DEXCOOL coolant -- good or bad ?
I guess if the leak is showing up in the snow, then it's not likely getting into
the cylinder -- right ?? What do you think, and what's causing these head gasket
leaks ? -- it had to be inferior gaskets, that cannot handle the acidic content in
the DEXCOOL . Not sure what to think. I will say that in my old 1997 Lumina, I
drained out all the DEXCOOL, and refilled with standard green coolant about 3
years ago, and no problems. My sister's 97 Lumina had head gasket leaks, and
seized 2 motors, that costed her a fortune to rebuild.
Great video BTW, and very educational.

If leaking any coolant , i would check to see where leaking . These engines are known for bad head gaskets . Nothing wrong with DEXCOOL if maintained correctly . Most issues i see is from people that do not regularly change the coolant . Then electrolysis starts to happen . Some of the head gasket issues on those are from the head bolt, coming out of the aluminum block , That is why the thread repair kits just for them are made .

      @Happy4Go2Lucky 2 роки тому

In Denver the only auto parts store to carry the elbow was Napa. That elbow is not available at advance auto parts ,O’Reilly auto parts, or AutoZone. I replaced the elbow in 2020. It’s 2020 June 22 and I replaced the boot on the end of the intake manifold that connects to the throttle body. I got the three bolts tightened up wonky, not Flush, and I have a gap where I can see one of the pins lower front so there’s a gap between 2 aluminum brackets. Worse than that I burned up the brakes driving 10 miles no 6 miles with the throttle position sensor stuck on the highest setting. I had to turn the car off at stoplights to keep from crashing into the cars ahead. Then it was hard to start the car. I left home, drove a few miles and the car died at a stoplight the idle dropped from 750 to 250 100 zero. After fluttering the accelerator I got the car started and got it into gear but it stayed at 3850 RPMs. I had to use the brakes to drive. It was horrible. At the end of 6 miles smoke was coming out from the brakes. I couldn’t even stop the car to pull into the driveway. So I turn the car off with both feet on the brakes. After talking to a mechanic who suggested that the throttlebody might be misaligned I took a visual look at the connection to the right of the new boot and discovered that one of the alignment pins lower front was showing which means that the whole throttle body is misaligned to the right of the stationary bracket mounted to the engine. The boot to the left does not seem to be the problem. But I’m getting an error code P0101 for mass airflow sensor and throttle position sensor P0121. Previously the only check engine light was the error code P0405 exhaust gas recirculation position sensor circuit. So now I am stranded on June 23, 20202 1/2 to get tools to reposition the throttlebody to the intake manifold. I don’t know if the throttle position sensor has slipped out of place or what the hell is going on. Further note when I put everything back together I forgot to tighten the 8 mm hose clamp on the air intake where it connects to the aluminum throttle body housing. Then I discovered that the hose clamp around the mass airflow sensor had been loose the entire time I’ve owned the car since Christmas 2018. At least the throttle position sensor was not a problem with the loose air intake. Oh and I put the cover over the top of the engine that I had removed because it trapped heat and rotted out that rubber elbow by the power steering pump. Here in Denver we have very little rain. Driving in snow with red roads a lot of road grit could get loaded up on the intake manifold on the plastic body where the fuel injectors poke through. That was the reason for putting the cover back on. The cover is to help keep dirt away from the fuel injector holes in the plastic intake manifold sometimes called a Plenum. Well that steel plate on the rubber boot to all the right of the intake manifold seems to be the source of the rubber cracking. It seems to be a terrible design. I got the dorman boot and blue gaskets. The gaskets would not stay in the grooves. The gaskets kept popping out so I knew there was no way the gaskets would work. So I reused the old gaskets. The Felpro fuel injector O-rings did not include the little plastic rings at the bottom of the fuel injector that keep the spacing of the O-ring proper. So that was a complete waste of money buying Fel-Pro O-rings. Sure the old O-rings were somewhat hard from heat. Really the biggest problem was the rubber boot with a crack going halfway around that could not be seen till it was removed. Now I’ve got these other issues. I’m wondering is there a gasket between the two metal aluminum brackets of the throttle body? I have FIXD to view the check engine light codes. The dash light does not disappear after resetting the code right away. So I thought I had the vehicle fixed and the light will go off after 25 miles. There’s got to be a better way to test my work and be sure that the check engine light is not on. I really got hosed driving across Denver and now I’m stranded with no tools. I hate to tow it to the dealer and pay $1000 ransom. So the order of the day is to re-tighten the bracket on the boot to the aluminum throttle body and get the spacing proper.

P0300 is random misfire . It means a misfire detected , but not enough counts on any one cylinder to get a misfire code for the one cylinder . If no vacuum leaks , my next question would be have you had to add any coolant . Those are also known for bad head gaskets . If have had to add any coolant i would check for coolant in the cylinders . A lot of times that spark plug will look real clean

Getting my as* kicked by a P0300 on a 2004 Cadillac Northstar with 90K and am working on it for a friend (no $!). Many hours, tests, and supposed fixes and I still get the code. Cold starts shake a lot and then calm down in 30-seconds or so. But you can still feel/hear intermittent misfires. Just wondering if you could recommend a reasonably priced scanner that can detect misfire counts by cylinder and fuel trim? Has new coil overs, plugs, and passed smoke test. Noid-tested injectors. Cat not smelly, but on my cheapy Ancel OBD2 I'm getting both banks OL Fuel Faults. Have not checked O2 sensors yet.
But, had an ex-Cadillac mechanic by yesterday and he phoned a current Caddy Master Tech. Don't know how but they believe it is a failing (or failed?) head gasket(s)? Should I do an antifreeze fluid color test?

    • @wtbm123
      @wtbm123  2 роки тому

Could be a head gasket , May try and do a pressure test on cooling system . A lot of times when you shut it off the pressurized coolant finds its way into a cylinder . Then it misses more on that cylinder for a bit then seems a little better as it warms up. Have you had any coolant loss . . If enough coolant has went through a cylinder a lot of times it will make that spark plug look different than the others . Some times to fix the head gasket the threaded holes in block will need fixed .
