I went through a period in my Bachelor's studies in which I used AI for most of my outlines for papers. Once I completed that semester, while I had written so many papers...I could not remember anything I had written. I had done nothing to help myself learn. On top of this, I'm an Environmental major who used AI to write papers about sustainability. The irony is not lost on me. I've stopped since then, not only because of the impact, but mostly because it is my job as an Environmentalist to gather as much information as I can to help teach the world. AI is drowning out basic learning capabilities and unfortunately, many people think it is a new wave of intelligence we need.
Thank you so much for sharing this, it's so important to shed light on how people have used AI to understand how people should be better using it in the future (or how people should avoid using AI) ❤
It's not just that it's easy to become reliant on AI tools; it's also that doing your own writing and thinking makes you a better writer and thinker, i. e., it makes you smarter and more capable.
I am at university and haven't used AI, mostly due to a combination of not trusting the information to be accurate, and not wanting to cross the line from using AI correctly, and cheating on an assignment. I have heard about Chat GPT giving sources that don't exist, and I would like to develop the skills to perform a task myself, rather than relying on AI.
i asked chatgpt to recommend me some books to help with a research topic and 2 of the 5 it gave were fake ones that didn’t exist. i don’t know how people wholeheartedly trust the information that comes from it
I agree 100%. Let me just draw your attention to a typo. You wrote that GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transfer but it actually stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer (source:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative_pre-trained_transformer). In this context, transformer refers to a specific piece of software architecture❤
Thank you for talking about this! This video really highlights the depth of damage AI can do. I was aware of it to some degree, but I didn't know a lot of the numbers, and they're even more horrifying than I guessed. Which is saying a lot, honestly, I already figured it'd be pretty bad. Also really glad you brought up the legal/ethical issues of AI as well! As someone with a lot of friends who are artists, it's heartbreaking to see them shout into the void trying to get more people to care about having their work stolen from them like this.
I know several people that work in creative fields and they’re all frustrated by AI, a lot of companies will opt for a cheap AI generated image rather than working with people in the creative field, what 😩
I’m so glad you touched on this point. Here in Ireland data centres consume about 20% of electricity. And it’s causing the prices per kilowatt to be stagnant. Unfortunately, it’s environmental impact is going to 100x as AI and especially AGI and ASI will become part of our daily lives. Everything will possible be embedded with AI. Whilst robots, autonomous vehicles, smart cities and the inevitable transhumanist future will utilise the more demanding AGI. Maybe it could come up with zero waste materials? Who knows. The years leading to 2030 will most certainly be revolutionary. But I’m positive that it’ll also have a positive impact on our drive for a low waste future. But the working class has to demand it. We do have to have it in our hands and not in theirs.
Absolutely, there's so much potential for AI in waste sorting, designing efficient/recyclable/biodegradable products, autonomous reverse logistics, monitoring (ab-)use of products in the sharing economy... I could go on! I really hope that people finally wake up to its potential, I've been waiting for decades and still it's hard to find anybody whose appreciate goes beyond using ChatGPT to draft their emails :/
I didn't think my distrust of AI could be made worse but you have absolutely blown my mind. It makes be sad that we seem to be doing so much to stunt our brains and ability to think for ourselves.
@@jonathanmelhuish4530 We literally understand it. That’s the point here. We understand the cost especially. And it is something to fear how we humans coast along destroying our world for profit.
Coincidentally I just started using an AI program called GG and I've found it really helpful but didn't realize how energy intensive it was! I'm frustrated that the environmental costs aren't communicated clearly before using it. I wish there was a law that all environmental costs of a product or service need to be clearly articulated. Thanks for your time and effort to research this.
This was a really interesting video. I thought AI must have its disadvantages but never deep dived it. Thanks for the info! I also find it a great conversation starter on the topic, so I shared it woth my colleagues, who might use AI for their daily job. One technical comment: you are talking crazy fast in this video. Maybe you could consider talking a bit slower. Usually I don't have any problem understanding you, but for this video I had to rewind a few times and pay close attention.
I thought about trying out Chat-GPT when it was newer, but never have tried it because my curiousity wasn't high enough to give it my phone number in order to use it. Now after your video I'm glad I didn't. :)
I can't stop thinking about how this situation comapres to the beginnings of internet. There are surely a bunch of similarities, mostly going from painstaking book searches to simple googling and subsequently some loss of patience, critical thinking etc. But are there differences? Like maybe a more notable attack on creativity?
I don't use chatgpt if I can help it.... my biggest AI-footprint is my use of pinterest for image storage, second biggest AI-footprint is my medical care but that I have little or no control of. I don't print out free patterns as it is easy enough for me to pick up used clothing patterns or to drape a pattern myself without needing a printer ink or electricity to run said printer... also I don't hae the computer set up to do my costume work due to low income... doing what I can on the cheap with second hand goods as much as possible.
Or, put another way, it's amazing how energy efficient our brains are! We have so much to learn from nature. I'm pretty confident that AI will help us do that.
One big issue I find with people using AI so much, especially for creative tasks like video scripting, is how unpersonal it feels. You aren't using your brain or creative skills for this, the words generated are a robots words instead of yours, so the result ends up feeling completely soulless.
I know it can be a weird idea, but what do you think about making an impact video about sex shops and stuff they sell? Like the production, amount, materials etc.?
I've tested out chat GPT and found it was inaccurate and churned out very bland and generlaised info. I personally have very little application for it and like you, would rather form my own opinion based on actively researching different sources - it's an important critical skill to develop and I see people only too happy to give that up for the ease of AI. I think a lot of people are uninformed about AI and its impact, using it in ways it's not designed for and are incredibly wasteful of the resource. Thanks for helping to raise more awareness!
Honestly, I was curious about it, so I asked it some questions a few months ago to see if it could even be helpful to my research - and it gave me nothing I couldn’t have found manually in 15 minutes (just without proper citation and sources), I personally would never recommend it if you’re working on nuanced and complex subjects
@@Gittemary Hard same. The eco footprint alone is enough for me to be wary of it but added to it, it's not even providing valuable results at this time.
Agreed, there's a lot of ignorance around AI, even just around LLMs. I don't think this video particularly helps in that respect, because it wasn't focussed on that, but I encourage everyone to learn. There's lots of excellent free resources and courses online, e.g. Andrew Ng's "AI for everyone" course.
@@Gittemary ChatGPT (and other LLMs) are *not* a research tool. Try using them for summarisation, brainstorming, editing or translation, that's what they're good at.

This video is disappointingly one-sided, a bit like, say, people who complain about the raw materials and energy needed to produce lithium-ion batteries. They're not wrong per se, it's just that they can't see the wood for the trees. Those with a little broader perspective look at all the myriad opportunities that lithium-ion batteries unlock - electric vehicles, using solar energy at night etc. - instead of just complaining about the downsides. I hope that as you learn about AI, you will open your eyes and understand how AI can help us create a dramatically more sustainable world.
