Just finding out even more of the fan community worked on the remasters as a team. What a great idea. It worked for sonic mania and it's definitely worked here
@treknobabble1701 it looks like Sonic CD with widescreen but made in 2017 which would not be that bad if it cost 2 dollars and did not get so much praise, and if far less people worked on it. Got so much praise fans want the team to replace sonic team.

I'm on 2 now. I played the originals when I was 13 when they came out. I'm in nostalgia heaven. Tank controls are so much better. 40 fathoms is haunting... Thank you to the creators and those who decided this❤️
TR1 and 2 had almost no complian. The light problem un TR3 was easy to fix. TR4 in the other hand, has some cryptic things that needed more work. TR5 It's just awfull.
I noticed some issues with the water. For example, in the Lost Valley, there should be rapids in the river, but instead of making the water affects look closer to how they did the rapids in Tomb Raider 3 they left it completely still I can see how this could cause confusion amongst newer players because the strong current is still there but no rapids... that aside, this is my favorite way to play the 3 games!
Yup, they should patch: * Water currents * Brighter flames * Levels autosave * Quicksand waves * 3D shipwreck lamps * Screen font for subtitles * Menu rings transparency * Spooky Floating Island skybox
@@runarvollan Autosave should stay the hell away from these games. It's up to the player to save or suffer the consequences of messing up, like it should be.
@@SchrollShepard Tbh, based on the fact that how many times you save is tallied up, I assume there's probably an achievement/ trophy for saving as little as possible 🤔
Yes, there are problems with the camera, but apart from that, this remaster is brilliant! A nostalgic trip to the times when games required thinking and didn't treat the player like an idiot. I love the mode of switching between new graphics/old ones, and confronting how I remember games from my childhood.
I started the games this morning and my mind is blown away big time. When I was younger I used to play the classics regularly on the PS1 and PS2. What's really crazy to me is that the remasters in sometimes look like I'd remember the classics but better, does that make any sense 😅? I love her charracter model (holy moly TR1's manu screen!!! ♥), the ambience, the additions to movement, like you mentioned the mid air roll and underwater roll in TR1. I still need to check out the modern controls though they look fun even though I am very used to the tank controls which never felt off to me (likely that growing up with these got me used to the tanks so idk). I really do hope the devs see how much love these games are recieving right now and I really wish they would redo TR4-6 as well. AoD has always been my favourite game and I used some incredible fan patches for it which makes it more than awesome to play. Imagine what this company would do with it. I always was kina upset when Crystal stated "there is no market for a remaster" because hello? We are long time fans of the franchise, sure we are in our mid to end twenties/thirties/fourties and older but does that mean we kind of expired? WE ARE THE MARKET! I am so glad these remasters happened, the announcement came out of the blue and they nailed it big time. Embracer, Aspyr, Saber, PLEASE do the other games as well. The young kid in me is as excited as I was when I got my copy of TR1 and TR2 when i was 8 years old and I would assume that many other fans feel that way right now.
Great video! Thoroughly enjoyed listening to it! I’m 33, and Tomb Raider was kind of my introduction to gaming! I remember 6 year old me couldn’t get past level 4 in the first game! Bought a couple of nights ago and already On level 14 now, all the childhood 90’s nostalgia, combine with advancing through the game as an adult, more able to work the game out - is just a brilliant experience, well worth £24!
Good review. I appreciate that unlike too many other people I've seen online you did not draw a huge spotlight on the way Pierre's jacket was censored.
Can’t get anymore faithful than this for a remaster. Not a remake but as a remaster they went and updated just about everything. I like this as games like ff8 were way more lazy as that game only updated the character models, for example. Tomb raider they updated everything. Its Prety awesome
You could say that these games now look the same that I always imagined them originally, part of the old games was that even though they looked flawed your imagination picked up on what was missing and made them look better than they actually did. I played all of the orig when they came came out and this makes me so happy, it's been a long wait.❤
Nice review Seth! I've been thinking about the R2 Grab issue since release and the ONLY thing I can settle on is that the 'modern' control scheme is just a PC control scheme translated to controller. Where on PC you'd be using mouse and keyboard with interact more commonly being a button on the keyboard, and 'shoot' being a mouse button - they've continued that through to consoles, keeping interact and action separate. I agree with you, it doesn't need to be. She will never need to interact with a pickup / lever / shoot while trying to grab, so having just one button should be enough.
Hmm, makes sense. Yeah hopefully they just duplicate the action between the two buttons. Tbh I've gone back to tank controls because the combat and in tight spaces, the camera, is a pig with modern controls.. I've been trying to imagine how modern controls could work better with the whole back and side flipping thing that even normies still want back and I think strafe-based would be a great solution. So where the right analogue stick rotates the camera and Lara with the left analogue stick moving her backwards, forwards and side to side. Think how LAU is controlled when you have guns out, it'd be that permanently (obv without having to have guns out all the time).
i actually loved modern controls despite the necessity of pulling weapons to back dash and the absolute lack of sidewalking, they feel fresh and make the games more fluid and challenging
I genuinely couldn't be happier with how these remasters have turned out! I know some people were weary of this being a cheap cashgrab but this has been made with love and care by people who truly love and respect the Classic era of Tomb Raider. Some of the devs on Twitter have confirmed a patch is in the works so we'll probably see a lot of the issues pointed out in this video along with some graphical glitches corrected. I'm also hoping they add Level Select and Outfit Select features too.
As someone who never got to play the classics but have always wanted to, these Remasters are a blessing! I started with the modern controls bc that's what I'm used to, but the camera is insanely wonky like in TRU. And in tight spaces / corridors, I can't see what I'm doing, which makes it difficult to avoid traps. I've had to switch to tank controls in such spaces just to be able to see lol. The combat with modern controls also seems more difficult, imo. She keeps jumping towards the enemies instead of away, and I have a hard time getting her to comply with the flips instead of turning her back on things actively trying to kill her 😂 I'm currently using the tank controls bc it does seem easier (for now), but also bc I want the experience that nostalgic players had back in the day 🫶✨️
This looks fantastic. Personally I'd also appreciate a decent CRT filter + 4:3 aspect ratio as an option for the retro mode, especially for the PS version as obviously you can easily slap some Reshade filters on PC but not on Playstation.
@@kdkseven Haha, yeah I can probably hook up my PS4 to an actual CRT screen too and that'll scratch that itch but cmon. I'll just skip the PS version and go straight to PC
Had a little test play of T1 today.. really like what they've done. I can't stop myself flicking back and forth between the old and new graphics. Even the old graphics look significantly better than the og ps1 graphics (I have a nice upscaler if I want the og 4:3 ratio on my ps1). Well done Saber and Aspyr. Can't wait to deep dive into these games when I have the time. :)
Should patch: * Water currents * Brighter flames * Levels autosave * Quicksand waves * 3D shipwreck lamps * Screen font for subtitles * Menu rings transparency * Characters looking like Sims * Lara's swimsuit under shorts * Spooky Floating Island skybox * Same action/gun trigger button
54 years old and TR has become my favorite title in all of its incarnations. This is a great video as I just pulled the trigger on the remasters last night. Super stoked about the camera and motion upgrades. Cheers, mate! Great info all around!
i was pleasantly surprised with how faithful the remasters were, i played with the good ole "tank" controls. the only ridiculous "modern" touch was Crystal Dynamics hilarious and salty trigger warning at the start, i'm so very grateful that better companies Aspyr/Saber were in charge of the remasters!
Absolutely agree with your points, and I’m also really enjoying modern controls! The only thing I noticed is that Lara won’t grab ledges and go down if she’s in a crawling space (this happens in TR3 where we have the crouch move). I mean, it’s nice to have now that move where she rolls forward and falls down, but there are situations where these crouch places are very high, and she loses health when falling down like this 🤦🏻♂️ We should have the same option of falling down while grabbing the ledges the same way we can do now in open surfaces
Ah it's such a beautiful remaster. I'm away travelling, so no longer have my PC to play them on ( cries) hehe. But I love these efforts! Great video too!
For my money, the best change the remaster makes is to Tomb Raider 1's control. The addition of the midair tumble and the increased responsiveness on jump timing to bring the control-feel into line with the other two games just stands as a straight-up, no-downsides improvement; the only problem is that it might muck with the muscle memory of long-time TR1 players until they start playing it a bit more like TR2. 6:20 - The bikini was LIKELY added to avoid tripping over a rating problem, honestly. Pixelated or not, some stickler could point it out and argue it should drive up the age rating.
my mom played tomb raider when she was pregnant, my aunt played tomb raider 4 when i was little and sometimes she solved the puzzles so i can just fool around and now (since i was basically born) i'm a huge fan of tomb raider, it's so nice to have the remaster! great video!
Seriously appreciate your thoughtful reviews and well thought out content on the channel! Wish I'd found your channel sooner- better late than never!! Still waiting for the waving red background in the TR2 inventory backgriound :(
TR3 is one of the first games I played on my PS1 back then... I was 13. Good old childhood memories. Pixels are part of my early years forever and I love it! absolutely stunned of this remaster! Great to hear you liked it as well.
The only complaint I have was in tomb raider 3s levels. Some of the beginning levels, in the temple, the blues and blacks are gone. In the London levels, the blues were what made it so unique. Besides that, I can now play them all without having to switch to tank controls for some jumps.
Graphic updates are very good, but there are problems with the game. Modern controls having major camera issues in tight hallways. There's two different action buttons for some reason. Can't side jump or back jump with modern controls, or at least game doesn't instruct you how. Gun aiming is glitchy, was staring at bear and L1 wouldn't lock on.
The two different action buttons might be my biggest gripe. On PC it is E for things like pickups and switches, but M1 to grab ledges. It should just be E. The modern controls need to be reworked IMO. As well as the jumps, Lara needs at the very least to be able to hop-back and when in walk mode step back slowly. Without this it makes aligning jumps too painful.
@@soulsphere9242 I wish there was a way to map ledge grab to the jump button. Just jump toward a ledge and keep the button held down to grab it. Also, a great example of how painful it is to fine tune a vertical jump is the second secret in the very first level.
@@skabliggum7313 Ledge grab assigned to jump would probably also be acceptable as an option, yeah. in fact that option would even work with tank controls. I gave up with the modern controls for now.
@@soulsphere9242 I played for a couple hours yesterday. Trying to stick with modern controls. Fine tuning vertical and horizontal jumps, and a quirky camera are my only issues at this point. Otherwise, having fun.
@@soulsphere9242Not sure if it’s the same on PC, but on PS4 she can do the little hop back when in combat mode, making it easier to align a running jump. You have to make sure you’re pressing the button straight back though, if not she’ll just turn around😅
Great video! When you said that the modern control feels right, I thought it was sarcasm, and I was prepared to smile with the next line, but no, you actually meant it!
It's completely indescribable how happy I am with the remastered version. They did a lot right given it's not perfect although it is quite close to being so. I haven't stopped playing.
Actually the save crystal system is still in there, though hidden behind a "new game+" which is basically just a "hard mode" with no medi-kits, double-trap damage and those save crystals. Since cheats are still available as well it's possible, to skip through the first playthrough and playing on the hard mode right from the get go. Interesting enough that also means Tomb Raider 2 possess now save crystals too.
@@SchrollShepardI think the idea is that you get full health restore at the start of each level, so only have to manage your health in between . . . but yeah, I don’t see me being able to do that, either! 😂
@@Melissa.Garrett You already have that in the normal game though. It wouldn't really make a difference. Also, he said you take x2 damage from traps? Others have said the new game + makes enemies deal extra damage and doubles their health, and brings back save crystals. I haven't seen anyone mentioning lack of medikits or only traps dealing extra damage. In fact, I'm gonna go look it up right now, I'm curious
@@SchrollShepard I’m guessing the idea of no medipacks comes from the fandom challenge of NMNW - when challenges were to complete the game without using medipacks or any weapons besides the pistols. That operated on the basis that you only had to hold out without medipacks until the next level, when you’d get a full restore. I have no idea if New Game+ does remove medipacks, but if it does, this would be how they expect you to manage health. I quite like the idea of upping enemy health and damage, etc., for a hard mode - but doing it without medipacks? Yikes. I might try for the “No medipacks” or “No weapons” achivements eventually, but not both at once! 😱
Some control-related things were just force-fed to us, and we got used to them over time. Sprinting with R3 is one of those things, I guess. It's uncomfortable, but at least it's not "outdated" or "archaic". Why are the grab and action buttons separate now? Probably because the developers have too many traumatic memories of pushable blocks they tried to climb and ended up pushing instead, or vice versa.
If you hold the buttons for walk+look while loading any save for any game you will equip Lara's red circle glasses. This works for any outfit. Only in new graphics though.
I can't begin to describe how in love I'm with this and yesterday I had the best Valentine's Day of my life. I honestly hope we get the rest of the classics with this treatment, if we get these, I'm gonna be so happy i'm just gonna ignore the rest of Crystal Dynamics games as if they don't exist. (?) It's amazing to see the original Lara Croft back in a remaster made with such love and care. ;^;
Currently half way through TR1, taking it slow (new for me) and enjoying every room. Constantly pressing F1 to compare the new and old visuals. I am in love with this remaster and can't wait to go through all three games. There are a few issues that will hopefully be fixed with a future patch. I hope hope hope they don't drop the support for these now that they are out. And even if they do, hopefully the modding community will step up and fix those nitpicks that I have. In the perfect world, AOD will get a remaster like this as well one day.
I am 51 and been playing the remasters im very impressed, tomb raider 2 is my favourite of all time and holds a special place in mg heart, i qued up for the game back in November 1997 and played it all evening, so nice to be able to play these again its been a long 25+ years and wirh the modern graphics im playing like how i used to its a weird feeling and knowing where everything is. 😎😍
"Bid myself rid" makes perfect sense. In this context "bid" means to instruct, to give an order to. "Beat myself rid" makes no grammatical sense at all. I suspect you're mistaking it for "I beat myself to rid myself of these fantasies" (which is itself poor grammar), but that isn't what he's saying. He's just using archaic verbiage.
@@SethMcKenzieTVpersonally, i think they deliberately changed it. “Beat myself” is definitely what he says. You can hear it. But I think the similarities between punishing yourself and wanking, which are the two ways “beat myself” could be interpreted, is why i think they’ve deliberately put it as bid. It does still make sense, it’s just not what he says 😂
@SethMcKenzieTV I think you're confusing Roman Catholics with Bhuddists. (Which is what these guys probably are, because they certainly seem to be.) Buddhists are forbidden from self-mortification because Bhudda himself experimented with it and came to the conclusion that it didn't work. Re the pronunciation, I'd say he's pronouncing bid as "beed" due to Dodgy Accent Syndrome on the part of the voice actor.
Thanks for making this video. I've been wanting to hear your thoughts on the remasters for a while, glad that you are enjoying them despite the few issues you mentioned.
As I was used to the OG controls (with shoot and grab being on X) I changed my controls to Square for jump and X as secondary in the modern controls and for the most part this works well, with grab now being back on X. However, the targeting with L2 can be very hit and miss and think that it would be far better if they introduced true targeting with R3 which locks onto an enemy and while locked Lara strafes and strafe jumps. I also switched dashing from L3 to R2 (as it is R2 on Tank controls) but haven't started TR2 or 3 yet, so not tested if this works well.
Care to share any bugs for PS4? Still debating myself getting these either on the Switch or PS4 or maybe PC but I saw on another review that the PC port got the worst treatment out of all the ports
@@maualcarazz not enough to regret it. It plays pretty well overall for a launch title lol. Photo mode is broken on PS4 as hide UI and reset settings are both X so you basically can't take the photos you want. I'm also struggling with the modern controls and I definitely can relate with Seth about some of the button mapping choices. FML! I also had a crash when picking up the shotgun in TR1 from the skeleton.
Great video!! I'm trying to get all the collectibles In one playthrough trophy but I heard there's a collectible that's bugged that cant be obtained in Atlantis. And heard there's a fix coming. Don't know when. So creating backup saves before that moment moment would help.
Great video Seth. I know how much you love these games so for me that's great. I love the way you have a choice with controls. Looks great so bring it on. Cheers Seth another great video. Steve 👍
Im loving every second of it and tbh enjoying these games more with the new graphics. I can get into the flow of the game easier with the new framerate too.. One thing they need to have is a level select once youve completed a level
I hope after all these RE, TR, MGS remasters/remakes we would actually get PHYSICAL instruction booklets. Back in the 90's I was always reading those as they had things like character info.
Tomb Raider 1’s two step delay definitely is better, but is still present. I couldn’t tell you how many times I counted to two and pressed the jump button in the remaster, and Lara still didn’t jump. I also couldn’t tell you how many times I made a jump right off the end of a ledge and couldn’t grab onto the other ledge.
I think it'd be cool if Saber releases a demo of the remaster based on the original demos. They were my first (and, for a painfully long time, only) Tomb Raider experience. I have the full remaster, but I'd play that demo in a heartbeat.
Because there's people like me that actually prefer to use the analogue stick for tank controls lol. Alas, as much as I prefer tank controls I'm far too used to using the analogue stick to go back to using the D-pad.
@@Arachnocopium4U I do too. But for precision platforming, I switch to dpad, otherwise Lara keeps backing off the ledge or forward off of it. I don't know why that's happening. It must just be super sensitive.
Thanks for the review, You're right it wasn't a cheap cash grab like the MSG re-release was. I've only played the first two levels of TR2 and gone through the Manor and I am LOVING it !!! Here's hoping that T4-6 (Last Revelations was where I tailed off before LAU) remasterings are on the cards.
Played Tomb Raider II Remastered today up until Offshore Rig. You are absolutely right abouth the remake only giving extras to the game but nothing negative. Greetings from Germany.
I think that the ability to switch between original and modern graphics is absolutely amazing ! I use it constantly, and even from a gameplay perspective, I find it useful.
As someone who as a child got into video games because of Tomb Raider and Resident Evil, I can happily say Tomb Raider Remasters and RE1 Remaster are are all in my top 5 remastered games. They’re as close to perfect as it gets.
This red cross restriction is so stupid. I see that the actual red cross organization is of ethical importance but to disallow and criminalize the usage of said symbol in videogames is totally over the top nonsense.
Question from a newbie to the series. How do 4 to 6 fare in comparison to the first three? And do you think they're going to get the same remaster treatment?
It's really subjective but I personally find 4 to be really tedious and convoluted with it's level design, 5 to be really fun and good, if simple, and 6 is my favourite BUT it is a very very unfinished game with bad controls (I'm just able to look past that). The best way to play TR6;is emulating the European PS2 version
@@SethMcKenzieTV Which is odd, considering Aspyr did the Mac ports of the originals. I seem to remember they ported TR2 to OSX and iOS at some point too. But I guess they'd now have to do Intel and M1/M2 ports and they didn't consider it worth the effort.
Pretty Good video 👍 I've tried it the other day on the switch and i was a little confused by the button layout and camera...i really hope there will be one or two bug fixes and updates...especially with the modern controls and timing
The only thing i hate about this remaster is the water. It looks god awful. Im hoping the devs can either fix that or perhaps modders can bless us with the one thing this game is missing
Thank you so much for explaining the controls. I’ve been a long time tomb raider fan and I’m so excited for the remasters such stunning graphics now. I was having a hard time with the new controls so I stuck to the original but like you explained in your video it does look more fluid. I just have to practice the new controls. Do you think revelations and chronicles will be remastered.?
I stuck with tank controls and automatically went for the D-Pad rather than the stick to move Lara. The fingers never forget, lol. The camera can still be annoying though, esp in corridors, but this remaster is a wish come true.
The grabbing the edge as a save is just for the modern controls? I know could press action to grab, but this is more of a constant, she’ll always grab right?
Really enjoying it as I knew I would. So glad they’ve not ruined them. I’d personally be up for new Tomb Raider games to be made just like this, they wouldn’t sell as well as the new ones but it could be a sub-series/spin off from the mainline modern games.
Totally agree with using the trigger to grab is weird and awkward. Also, no auto saves also bit me as I drowned during the water section and was kicked back to the beginning, doh! Cheers.
I personally find this to be the best remaster we've had since Spyro Reignited! Which granted isn't saying much given the competition (GTA Definitive, Sonic Colors Ultimate, etc). The fact they went the extra mile to give the option of old and new when it came to graphics and controls as well as little details shows that Aspyr truly cared about what they were making and wanted to give something worthwhile for both fans and new players! I know some people have a soft spot for the save crystals but personally those made Tomb Raider 3 basically unplayable with its heavy trial and error so I'm happy to have a version that allows me to save manually. That being said, there's definitely room for improvement. Aside from the issues you brought up, I personally feel some of the animal enemies in TR1 should've had their models updated since they just look weird and a bit jarring in the new graphics. Nevertheless, a wonderful remaster and a great comeback for classic Lara Croft!
you have done an amazing job at adapting to the modern controls lara looks fast and smooth in your hands, i started the other day and just stayed with what i remembered from 96, i even use the d pad to move her as the analogue sticks were not around back then, on a second play through i might try and learn how you do it
Thanks, for moment-to-moment movement it's great but combat with 3+ enemies and the very many tight corridors are SO bad after more play time that I just can't deal lol@@darkestfugue
@@SethMcKenzieTV i will stick to what i know then, actually it has taken me all the way up to the cistern and im only starting to get to grips with the tank controls again, years of modern gaming messed up my original tomb raider technique lol
Played it for 3 hours now and absolutely love it. The new controls feel a bit weird to me and I changed back to tank controls. Maybe I give it another chance.
13:03 The look button is not at all redundant because the camera is so buggy with the modern controls. Double tapping Look will reset the camera position, which is essential in some tight spaces, where the modern camera goes crazy.
One thing I noticed watching streams on twitch is there's no tutorial for the modern controls. I've seen people who've never played the originals give up on modern controls specifically because they couldn't figure them out
2:22 They really managed to make it seem like Aspyr is (fully) responsible for development of the remaster. Strangely enough, you don't see the name of the actual developer Saber as much, or even at all... and we have seen articles that Saber actually employed Tomb Raider fans/modders to work on this project, so it (largely) appears to be a project 'from passionate fans, working under a company that wasn't revealed until the last second (Saber), using code given by Aspyr, in a franchise owned by Crystal Dynamics, that is in turn owned by Embracer', how peculiar😂 16:20 AOD is my favorite too - I recently replayed it and had lots of fun! This time, I employed a non-lethal approach and tried to take down as many guards as possible using the stealth mechanics (to put these to the test), and was pleasantly surprised to learn that - with a bit of effort - it's actually possible to knock out (instead of outright kill) almost all of the human enemies/innocent guards (in particular). If you use the stun gun for the others (Cabal mercenaries, i.e. the actual enemies, can be excluded), everything fits nicely within the AOD narrative.

Thanks and yeah I see what you mean but man I swear he says beat, like a religious zealot punishing himself to get rid of such fantasies
Of course he pronounces it as beat. He''s French, remember ;)
"I bid you farewell!"
Im pretty sure he does say beat but maybe they maybe just wanted to sensor that violent word perhaps ? That was my first thought anyways
Occam's Razor tells me he just says bid. It's the only thing that makes true sense
I still find the old graphics charming.
That's because they're still beautiful.
Me too, I'm so happy they included them. Just one quick button press, it's so refreshing
Yeah I'm often playing with modern controls but OG graphics. Just wish it was 60fps.
@@theerealatm Why?.... Look past nostalgia. Modern graphics are objectively better.
@@arcticwolf6402 Just because something is objectively better doesn't mean you get more enjoyment from it. Nostalgia is powerful :)
I'm on 2 now. I played the originals when I was 13 when they came out. I'm in nostalgia heaven. Tank controls are so much better. 40 fathoms is haunting... Thank you to the creators and those who decided this❤️
I’m surprised they didn’t include Tomb Raider 4 The Last Revelation, and Tomb Raider Chronicles to make it the complete original series collection
That would have nailed it.
I wonder if someone will do the same with Legacy of Kain - that series definitely can not be let to be forgotten.
Original series would not been complete with AoD though 😉
Maybe they could follow up with Revelation, Chronicles and Angel of Darkness.
Hell I would have paid $60 no problem for that!
Yup, they should patch:
* Water currents
* Brighter flames
* Levels autosave
* Quicksand waves
* 3D shipwreck lamps
* Screen font for subtitles
* Menu rings transparency
* Spooky Floating Island skybox
Yeah I do hope they fix that... I assume they will tbh
@@laracroftstan Probably, yeah.
I'm not an achievement hunter, so I don't pay much attention to that, but it would make sense if there was.
I agree with everything you said! This is the first time the whole fanbase have been united on something in decades
@@SethMcKenzieTV Yes, it's absolutely bonkers right now 😍
No market for remasters and yet it’s one of the best selling games again. And one of the most preordered ones.
👍
Heres to hoping this sells well enough for them to make a TR 4 (and hopefully 5 and 6) remaster in the future.
It’s coming February 14th
Great video! Thoroughly enjoyed listening to it! I’m 33, and Tomb Raider was kind of my introduction to gaming! I remember 6 year old me couldn’t get past level 4 in the first game! Bought a couple of nights ago and already On level 14 now, all the childhood 90’s nostalgia, combine with advancing through the game as an adult, more able to work the game out - is just a brilliant experience, well worth £24!
Last revelations was my first tomb raider. Then 3, 1 and 2. I can’t wait for last revelations. If they do it.
2 is my favourite of the series I bought on launch day Nov 1997 I'm glad Lara Croft is back
Last Revelation is my favorite tr of all time, I really hope they do give it the same treatment!
Good review. I appreciate that unlike too many other people I've seen online you did not draw a huge spotlight on the way Pierre's jacket was censored.
Lara looks so gorgeous now, it will be hard to play with one hand.
But I'm gonna.
🤣
Great review homie, ps 'I bid myself rid...' is grammatically fine, just a bit archaic but that's what makes it work for him
I was about to say that lol like to wish the thoughts away, 'bid farewell'
Amazing points you made. I noticed almost all of them myself too. Lets really hope we get a decent patch/update soon. Very well made video!
Thanks 😊
“Some freak out there, probably in America” killed me 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Can’t get anymore faithful than this for a remaster.
Me too I'm a staunch classicist, but I'm finding the modern controls to be a delight once you use to them
@@superlatero yeah, when i first tried it was horrible and disorienting, but after some minutes i just realized how good it feels
I'm also hoping they add Level Select and Outfit Select features too.
i really loved the look of the remastered opera house in tomb raider 2, the big chandelier was a very nice touch
They actually went above and beyond and added in some nice things. All the new ceilings in TR1, for example. Gorgeous.
She keeps jumping towards the enemies instead of away, and I have a hard time getting her to comply with the flips instead of turning her back on things actively trying to kill her 😂
I'm currently using the tank controls bc it does seem easier (for now), but also bc I want the experience that nostalgic players had back in the day 🫶✨️
This looks fantastic. Personally I'd also appreciate a decent CRT filter + 4:3 aspect ratio as an option for the retro mode, especially for the PS version as obviously you can easily slap some Reshade filters on PC but not on Playstation.
You can get an OSSC or RetroTink for CRT filters (and many other uses of course). But that's a bit of an investment.
This is how you remaster something. Graphic change options and control options. Nailed it
Should patch:
* Water currents
* Brighter flames
* Levels autosave
* Quicksand waves
* 3D shipwreck lamps
* Screen font for subtitles
* Menu rings transparency
* Characters looking like Sims
* Lara's swimsuit under shorts
* Spooky Floating Island skybox
* Same action/gun trigger button
I agree 😊
54 years old and TR has become my favorite title in all of its incarnations. This is a great video as I just pulled the trigger on the remasters last night. Super stoked about the camera and motion upgrades. Cheers, mate! Great info all around!
Unquestionably yes, this remaster package is the definitive way to play TR1-3.
Protip: L3+R3 in-game shortcut to Photo Mode.
I didn't know there was another way to get photo mode 😂
photo mode is great for looking behind you for items and passages you may have missed (instead of backtracking and risking health)
i was pleasantly surprised with how faithful the remasters were, i played with the good ole "tank" controls.
the only ridiculous "modern" touch was Crystal Dynamics hilarious and salty trigger warning at the start,
i'm so very grateful that better companies Aspyr/Saber were in charge of the remasters!
Absolutely agree with your points, and I’m also really enjoying modern controls! The only thing I noticed is that Lara won’t grab ledges and go down if she’s in a crawling space (this happens in TR3 where we have the crouch move). I mean, it’s nice to have now that move where she rolls forward and falls down, but there are situations where these crouch places are very high, and she loses health when falling down like this 🤦🏻♂️
We should have the same option of falling down while grabbing the ledges the same way we can do now in open surfaces
Would really love these guys to make a Silent Hill 1 & Metal Gear Solid 1 remaster
my mom played tomb raider when she was pregnant, my aunt played tomb raider 4 when i was little and sometimes she solved the puzzles so i can just fool around and now (since i was basically born) i'm a huge fan of tomb raider, it's so nice to have the remaster! great video!
Awesome video, Seth! Well-narrated, informative and entertaining! I loved this analysis of the controls. Btw, the Red Cross thing is SO bizarre 😂
Thanks man and yeah haha, I prefer green and white anyway. Green more represents life, anyway
Great video pal! I agree with everything you said but not as passionate as you haha. Let’s hope they decide to do a next trilogy of remasters 🙏
Yea, my gangsta, thanks for watching 😊
It's completely indescribable how happy I am with the remastered version. They did a lot right given it's not perfect although it is quite close to being so. I haven't stopped playing.
Actually the save crystal system is still in there, though hidden behind a "new game+" which is basically just a "hard mode" with no medi-kits, double-trap damage and those save crystals. Since cheats are still available as well it's possible, to skip through the first playthrough and playing on the hard mode right from the get go. Interesting enough that also means Tomb Raider 2 possess now save crystals too.
Hadn't reached NG+ at the time but am excited 😁
No medkits?? The hell? I'm not even trying that, wouldn't make it past the second or third level...
Only issue is the water, it looks like
She is floating. I think it needs to be a bit more blue or something
She used to become blue/green in water..
She becomes blue but i think its bugged as it only works some of the time
Some control-related things were just force-fed to us, and we got used to them over time.
I had a feeling this was a good remaster but you've sold the game to me. Just bought it on PSN. Can't wait to play it.
I can't begin to describe how in love I'm with this and yesterday I had the best Valentine's Day of my life.
I honestly hope we get the rest of the classics with this treatment, if we get these, I'm gonna be so happy i'm just gonna ignore the rest of Crystal Dynamics games as if they don't exist. (?) It's amazing to see the original Lara Croft back in a remaster made with such love and care. ;^;
Glad you're enjoying it, my man 🫂 I'm so freaking happy
I am 51 and been playing the remasters im very impressed, tomb raider 2 is my favourite of all time and holds a special place in mg heart, i qued up for the game back in November 1997 and played it all evening, so nice to be able to play these again its been a long 25+ years and wirh the modern graphics im playing like how i used to its a weird feeling and knowing where everything is. 😎😍
Love these games… I never beat them as a kid and now I can 😎👍🎮
"Bid myself rid" makes perfect sense.
Idk I mean it's a monk and usually crazy religious people beat themselves rid of sin or something. It fully sounds like beat to me 😬😬
@@SethMcKenzieTVpersonally, i think they deliberately changed it. “Beat myself” is definitely what he says. You can hear it. But I think the similarities between punishing yourself and wanking, which are the two ways “beat myself” could be interpreted, is why i think they’ve deliberately put it as bid. It does still make sense, it’s just not what he says 😂
@jtArtsMedia I think it's the accent of the voice actor that's causing confusion. I think he says "bid" but is pronouncing it "beed".
It's supposed to be "bid" like "bid farewell"
Thanks for making this video. I've been wanting to hear your thoughts on the remasters for a while, glad that you are enjoying them despite the few issues you mentioned.
Thanks for caring 😇
So glad to see you taking on the remasters!
Pleased to see your review here! 0.00 here we go!
Also, fml the PS4 version has come with a few minor bugs.
These remasters ignited my love for Lara all over again ❤ I’ve been playing nonstop and eager to get back every day 🥾🎒🔫🔫
Great video Seth.
Thanks Seth ... Is there any news on Physical copies of the Trilogy?
I hope after all these RE, TR, MGS remasters/remakes we would actually get PHYSICAL instruction booklets. Back in the 90's I was always reading those as they had things like character info.
Just FYI: The texture shown at 2:53 as a demonstration of "fairly obviously AI upscaled" is definitely *not* an AI upscale
I didn't mean that one specifically but yeah I see how it looks like that's what I'm referring to
Tomb Raider 1’s two step delay definitely is better, but is still present. I couldn’t tell you how many times I counted to two and pressed the jump button in the remaster, and Lara still didn’t jump. I also couldn’t tell you how many times I made a jump right off the end of a ledge and couldn’t grab onto the other ledge.
I love these games. I'm having a great time with them because they do feel faithful to the originals. Great video. 🙂
I think it'd be cool if Saber releases a demo of the remaster based on the original demos. They were my first (and, for a painfully long time, only) Tomb Raider experience. I have the full remaster, but I'd play that demo in a heartbeat.
I'd love tank controls on the dpad and modern on stick. Why choose?
Hopefully extra control options are patched in like this
I like to play with tank controls on the stick. If they ever patch, I hope they add it as as extra control options, not removing the actual scheme.
@@Fxrrxt2x Yeah that happens to me too. I guess maybe the analogue stick is a bit more sensitive than the d pad which would make sense.

You play with tank or modern controls?
@@jorisschelfhout2348 Tank :D
I love the remasters! I wasn’t there in the 90s when TR1 released but I have played the originals and this is definitely the best way to play
I think that the ability to switch between original and modern graphics is absolutely amazing ! I use it constantly, and even from a gameplay perspective, I find it useful.
Can't wait to try the collection out myself ❤🔥.
We just need the next 3 in another remaster trilogy next!
I like the term "overobsessed" I guess I am one as well, I play at least three Tomb Raider games every year.
How dare you diss my beloved Legacy of Kain? 😛
Great video! Thanks!
Do you know if it can be played on a macbook? I check on Steam but in the section system requirements it only indicates Windows
I've heard it's not out on mac 😬
@@SethMcKenzieTV Which is odd, considering Aspyr did the Mac ports of the originals. I seem to remember they ported TR2 to OSX and iOS at some point too. But I guess they'd now have to do Intel and M1/M2 ports and they didn't consider it worth the effort.
"Bid myself rid" is correct I think, isn't it? It's an old fashioned way of saying he tried / wished to be rid of them.
Pretty Good video 👍 I've tried it the other day on the switch and i was a little confused by the button layout and camera...i really hope there will be one or two bug fixes and updates...especially with the modern controls and timing
Hey, hench-man, thanks for the comment ;)
The only thing i hate about this remaster is the water. It looks god awful. Im hoping the devs can either fix that or perhaps modders can bless us with the one thing this game is missing
Oh mate sweet short and concise ♥️ I could not agree more.
Only for modern unfortunately
St Francis Folly pre-render. Beat myself rid, does actually make sense as it's a monk talking about self-flagellation.
Cheers.
No auto saves was just how it was back then.
i want them to remaster revelations so bad, that game freaked me out so much as a kid and I want to be freaked out all over again in HD.
Its a good game it's nice to see high quality textures. I don't remember the camera controls being as bad as that on playstation or windows 95
It's a great remaster, but btw Spyro Reignited was a remake from the ground up
@@SethMcKenzieTV Oh yeah but you know what I mean. lol
I love this game release so much! Now please I hope this will start a trend to remaster older PS1 game Resident Evil being one of them
you have done an amazing job at adapting to the modern controls lara looks fast and smooth in your hands, i started the other day and just stayed with what i remembered from 96, i even use the d pad to move her as the analogue sticks were not around back then, on a second play through i might try and learn how you do it
Thanks but I've gone back to tank due to how bad the camera is in tight spaces and the combat being weird and awful in modern :)
@@SethMcKenzieTV its funny you should say that because it looks like you were killing it in the video
"Bid" actually does make sense in that context. More than "Beat"
Strangely enough, you don't see the name of the actual developer Saber as much, or even at all... and we have seen articles that Saber actually employed Tomb Raider fans/modders to work on this project, so it (largely) appears to be a project 'from passionate fans, working under a company that wasn't revealed until the last second (Saber), using code given by Aspyr, in a franchise owned by Crystal Dynamics, that is in turn owned by Embracer', how peculiar😂
16:20 AOD is my favorite too - I recently replayed it and had lots of fun!
