Just picked one up yesterday. Had my mind made up on a 461, but the dealer was going to have to order one in. Glanced over at their saw display and saw the 462. The rest is history. The orange fuel filter has a smaller micron rating than the white ones, and the white filter is just so you can see when it’s dirty, it’s functionally identical to the black ones. I did my yearly update a couple months ago and we got to try out a 462, they’re slick saws for sure.
I have a German made 462 and it came with heavy duty dogs (I live in New Zealand) on the saw and side cover. Mtronic works great, run it out of fuel, fill and it starts first pull, no choke no pissing about. The saw cuts like a light sabre with a 20” bar. I love this saw.
Aside from the MS201T, 201 and 241, all pro Stihl saws come in a regular non-mtronic, m-tronic, VW (heated handles) and the 261 and 362 can come with the easy adjust chain, quikstop chain brake and possibly a few more cool acessories. The 462 does come with a non m-tronic carb.

The airfilter is white because on white filters, it is more easy to see if the filter is dirty or not. However, it is exactly the same material as the black ones.
The black filter called "HD2" is made from polyethylene fibers and has very small pores while the white on is made from polyamide (Nylon) and has larger pores. The black one is better at keeping dust out but it will clog up when exposed to oil or water. The white one is better for wet conditions...
It reminds me a lot of my 441 M-Tronic , especially on the flywheel side with the little chimney type deal and the AV mounting. It is a complete pain in the ass to work on, but when it is running right, LOOK OUT! It is usually my go-to saw when things get too chunky for the old top-handle.

@Todd Winter I highly disagree all saws are going to be computer controlled it's just the future that doesn't mean they're going to become inoperable I've put many hours on my 261 CM haven't had a single issue with it and nobody else I know is had any issues with them either. Anyone can get a bad saw m-tronic or carbureted it doesn't matter I'm sure there's a few bad ones but they're designed to last as long as any other saw there a pro saw they don't last only 6 months otherwise there'd be class action lawsuits all over the place.

Hey mate yeah I picked up my 462 in September last year in Australia and it’s a great saw. Biggest bar I run on mine is 28” with square ground fullskip Stihl chain and it’s Rips. But question I had was what exactly is the purpose of a skip chain? Is it to help clear wood out faster when do large cuts or is it to pick chain speed up on harder woods cause there is less cutters engaging? Love it with the black cover. Also air filters in aus are different definitely not white like that.
the whole purpose of full skip is to clear chips faster and to put less stress on the power head allowing you to run a much longer bar on a lighter saw for example you own a 462 and need a 41 inch bar and dont wanna spend another 1400 usd on a 661 so you buy full skip and a 41 inch 3003 or d025 bar and run it will put roughly the same stress on the motor head as a 32 full comp roughly same amount of cutters but a 28 on the 462 is well within reason of running full comp
Hey Human what would you recommend for a first stihl chainsaw? im looking to get one for tree work so I want the felling sights but that is about all I know...
@@Human1337, what about 362cm? (The newer ones are made in Germany now) I think I'd like the more power with a 20in an having the 3/8 chain an the option of a 25in bar just more versatile just put a 20in light bar on it an itll be real close to weight of a 261cm with a regular 20in. Just had to choose between a Dolmar (Makita) and my loyalty to Stihl. Turns out (I like the little Dolmar I own) the Stihl was over 300.00 more than the 7900 Dolmar and does not have the nonsense auto-tune that all the new saws have. Dolmar is kind of heavy though not sure of actual weight, will take up to a 36 in bar. Another benefit, the Dolmar is warrantied for a year, commercial usage or not. Better than the 90 day that most provide.
Cool vid. Good to know for when I upgrade to something beefier than my 260CM for bigger days. I still think a small saw for most of my stuff will be first. Just wondering if I go battery or not (I'm usually sawing out 1-3 smaller trees in the 8 to 14 inch range most times and making 2 to 4 cuts per tree plus some limbing).
So since you have both the 461 and now the 462 what do you think is the best saw? I know that 462 is like 1.5lbs. lighter than the 461. It is also supposed to have double the acceleration of the 461. Along with the spring anti-vibe feature and M-tronic carburetor that saw is going to be amazing. I live in Oregon and no shops around here have that new 462 saw yet. I can't wait to get one.
Human got the 462 ordered today. Went with a 25” light and 20” light bars, .063x3/8 yellow chains. Let me know if theres anything else I need to try. Dont cut much so this is way overkill for me.
It really depends on how you use the saw. If you don't like, know how or have time to make necessary carburetor adjustments then mtronic is for you. Operating the saw in extreme temperature and elevation variations make great use of the mtronic system. But if you're the type of user who does their fall firewood cutting and puts the saw away until next year, save your money for gasoline.
Go for it! 261c is probably my favorite saw, (besides my 044)and we have about every size. Going on year two and not a single issue. We have a bigger bar for my brother to use in the tree for big wood. Even with the bigger bar the thing still absolutely rips. Can’t wait till it blows up someday we we can get it hot sawed 🤙🏻. It’s worth every penny of the $600+
Prolly should buy an echo, you won't be disappointed, and you'll have enough extra$ to get a few chains. The stihl computer carb is a joke, worst saws I've ever owned. It's kinda been a trend in the last 4 years
Found out that though Makita owns Dolmar, Dolmar made in Germany as well. I hate the chain tightener in the chain cover, seems that is a cheap alternative to the chain tightener built into the saw.

Mine has an orange shroud. I wouldn't be able to find it with a black shroud.
I painted it
I'm looking at picking up a MS261. Do you think I should go with the M tronic or without?
It’s worth every penny of the $600+
Amazing saw with mtronic, so versatile it has a ton of grunt for 50cc.

Prolly should buy an echo, you won't be disappointed, and you'll have enough extra$ to get a few chains. The stihl computer carb is a joke, worst saws I've ever owned. It's kinda been a trend in the last 4 years
what specific brand of oversize felling dogs/bucking spikes are you putting on your saws?
Why does it spit fuel into the air filter? Mine does the same thing.
My wife says I have a chainsaw fetish ?? My garage is starting to look like Cory's ! Maybe so, but that's a good thing, STIHL !!!!!
Well it's alright would be better if it was a husky fetish though
Have the same problem 261 460 461 462 038 mag looking at 661 now
Mine too wow
The edits make the videos the best
where to buy that one
Found out that though Makita owns Dolmar, Dolmar made in Germany as well. I hate the chain tightener in the chain cover, seems that is a cheap alternative to the chain tightener built into the saw.
Looking to pickup a bigger saw. 661 or 462 hmm...
I dig these unboxing sand sharing your findings. It really helps us noobs to see the good the bad and the ugly about these saws. But my favorite part is your moding, and talking with a flashlight in your mouth. Lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣
