Great detail in your videos. I’ve been around chainsaws for almost 50 years and thought there’s not much I could learn but watching your repair videos is like a breath of fresh air.
As an Australian landowner with a few Stihl chainsaws, small engine repair vids is what I initially started watching in the early days of you tube. I have subscribed to many over the years and have found some really good ones. To be honest, I would find it hard to rate any of them as better, more informative or more detailed than this channel. Keep it up, Married with Small Engines is an extremely valuble asset for anyone who owns a chainsaw.

Great troubleshooting. And as you observed, something happened with the crimp press that caused too much spring pressure on the check ball. I bet Stihl watches all your videos and learn a lot.👍

I have never seen tha demonstration of cutting with a dull chain vs a sharp chain, but it really hammers the message home about what using a dull chain is going to do and how silly it is.

I use the straw method a lot, especially when testing check valves in carburetors but I use a piece of fuel line. Another good video, looking forward to your next!

I've been cutting since before you were born So why am I watching? Because I appreciate the clear and precise reminders and those problems I've not seen before, very clearly explained. This one with the oil tank vent problem is a great example.

Dang, I have a 461 that has the exact same problem. I bought that saw new, the oiler is turned up on it, the chain rails are clean. I havent run the saw in years because I run my 361 all the time. Ill have to check this.

I own a 462C I bought it used and needed to replace the oiler as it was snapped off. As well as a clutch drum and sprocket. Now I will have to see if the oiler vent is operating properly. Thank you for the video this was a new one on me.

It's funny that the oiler seemed to be working when the bar had been removed. That would have thrown me off.

On most after market bars you need to enlarge the oil hole on the bar cause they are usually smaller then a factory bar hole. Which won't let enough oil get to the bar rail.
That Was an Awesome Diagnosis I Also Think The Location of The Tank Vent Also Makes It Susceptible Too Getting Packed With Sawdust and Debris I Usually Take A Can of Carb or Brake Clean and Squirt it Down The Vent and Chase It With Very Slight Air Pressure From My Air Blower Then Retest it Too See If It’s Oiling But The Closeup You Provided Sure Did Look Defective In it’s Manufacturing Did The Customer Have This Issue Since The 1st Time He Used It New If So Id Say Your

I had a ms461 magnum it had probably done 2 hours work and had spent better part of 5 years in the shop trying to sort out out the oiling issues with it. It would lat approximately 4 cuts and would smoke the chain. Worst $2000 dollars I ever spent! Stihl would not replace the dud so I finally had enough of it and introduced a 12 gauge to it a couple of weeks back. I still love my ms390 but I will be looking at a husqvarna for my next big saw.

You mentioned you'd be making a vid on sharpening the chain... When the chain jumps out of the groove, even though it stays on the machine it can bugger up the 'followers'(?) that hold it in the groove. Is there a way to hold them steady so you can file them flat again removing the burrs that prevent free movement when recounted in the groove? That would be very useful. Have to go back to watch a long vid of you working on an old Stihl (05 series though I have an 02).

Donyboy73 had the same issue with the oiler vent on a Stihl repair. He blew out debris with a couple of light passes at an angle with compressed air [not a full on blast!].
I had this exact problem on an MS250 of mine.

Wow that chain was tight and looks like hes had the saw for a bit. I would almost want to do a vac/ pressure test to make sure the crank seals are still good after so much tension on the bearings. I know the mtronic saws can mask some air leaks until they get pretty bad. Definitely a good find on that tank vent!
This is interessting.. I have the exact same issue on my saw... MS250.. It's not oiling the chain it gets dry and heats up.. When i remove the chain and the sword oil comes out as normal and i see no issue with the hole and i have cleaned the bar and hole several times.. Now the issue seemed to have fixed itself.. But i will keep an eye on that "inlet port" .. maybe dirt has gone into that one.. i did not know that that little metal thing was the vent to the oil tank... Thanks for this video! :) I have had this issue with the saw since it was new.. It went back to the shop where i bought it and they repaired it and said it was leaking air from the bottom somewhere and there was a sealing issue.. after that it was working but i have seen this issue intermittent since then.. If i have this again i will check that valve! - SUBSCRIBED!

I have a 391 with oil problems,only uses one third of a tank to a tank of gas.The chain overheats and will not keep a edge.A tec looked at it and said it was fine,I told him to look at the bar.ITS BURNT.Im going to change the vent.Thanks
Great video on the chain.Now could you make a mention of the rake and if you should file that down a little when sharpening and how much.Also please show us exactly how to use the sharpener and tell us the brand and maybe the file diameter if possible.Thanks for showing the line on the teeth,i never knew that was there before you showed it.thanks your videos are pretty good.
Actually, that line is showing the angle of the tooth. The file is to be parallel to that line. Can you sharpen to that line? I doubt it.
This is exactly what is happening to my 462
The best and easiest chain sharpening way is by using Stihl 2in 1 Chain sharpener. I have it on my channel. But it's imortant to buy the exact one for the chain size of your chainsaw. For 35€/40$ you get the tool that perfectly removes the rakers and teeth so the chain cuts like brand new after every sharpening. And files in that tool are replaceable..

I always pour a little oil on the chain when I fill the oil tank, you can't over oil the chain.!
False negatives, or false positives when diagnosing can be time consuming and costly. . Experience is the best teacher though and the next time a saw comes in with the same symptoms it will be easier to diagnose….. hopefully😅

I know to be worried when it seems basically fixed but the video is only halfway through! 😁
you should of pulled the the clutch drum and greased that needle bearing . you know if they are missing basic chain maintenance. those needles are being neglected.
