River crossing in Botswana nearly ends in Disaster for one lucky Toyota Hilux owner.

- For many 4x4 lovers, water crossings provide the most exhilarating, unforgettable experience; however, they can offer challenges of their own.
These challenges are sometimes not for the faint hearted and have proven to be the most expensive.
The actual depth that you can cross depends on the height of your vehicle and its ground clearance. The general rule remains; if the water is above your wheels, it is probably too deep to cross mate.
A video of a Toyota Hilux went viral on social media recently with many users applauding the driver for his bravery; others claim it is the power of Toyota that got him through the river, while the rest humorously said that his Bush Lapa pushed him through successfully.
Did the Bushlapa caravan push the Toyota Hilux through the water crossing? or Should Toyota consider manufacturing vehicles that can also serve as boats?
Here's what happened when one extremely lucky 4x4 Overlander found himself in some deep water.

Don't try it in an amarok!
Forever with TOYOTA!!!
Thanks Nenga! it seems our group echo's your favoritism ;)
Great skills by the driver. A bit of patience & luck is sometimes all that is needed to get out of a sticky situation.
Nah, he had the best car to prove his "skills"
Ask Edward Bath how much it costs if that same luck turns on you in Botswana. Rather use grey matter and not end up in such situations. I don't have to be daft to prove I have a functional pair. I have five descendants.
Insanely powerful..towing while cruising in the lake
Some say Toyota make submarines as well as they do vehicles ;) Gggg
Toyota is King.
King of Africa. oh for sure!
This is Botswana...we love hosting the adventuresome!!!
Wow....close call. Great advertisement for Toyota. 👍🏽
yeah! but lets not discount the snorkel, suspension and most importantly tyres!
Was the repair afterwards more than R100K?
This why I love Toyota Hilux and I now understand why the Malians love it.
This guy is crazy. Well done
Brave or crazy. That is the question!
Good driving skills on this guy He almost finished without engaging front wheels
Go Toyota! That was amazing.
The other guy must be "F**k now i have to do it too"
what would you do differently?
@@SA4x4online is there an alternative way? I don't see one considering I don't even know the surroundings, I'd just follow the path 1st car used
@@is-haq4637 Ah Thanks Is-haq. That would be a common mistake! First you must make sure your vehicle is fitted with overlanding essentials such as suspension upgrades, snorkel, correct tyres, etc.... Then we would recommend some 4x4 training. Once you've walked across the river and know its depth. Only then you should follow suit. do you have any recovery gear?
@@SA4x4online No walking across the rivers in the top end of Australia, unless you want to be estuarian crocodile food!!
@@jasonclark950 Thanks Jason. That's a very good piece of advice. What if there are crocodiles? Firstly, we would check with local communities as to the wildlife found in their river river crossing. Take no chances as if there are often communication barriers when visiting foreign countries. if their English doesn't sound good. don't take the chance. How do you cross croc infested rivers in Aus Jason?
Beast mode !!
hahaa. Not only was beast mode activated. it was done so at full volume with all HULK settings ON! LMAO
I have this philosophical difference with the rest of the 4x4 community where a 4x4 is supposed to get me out of trouble and not into trouble --- this is not to be emulated since only the skill of this driver got him out of a situation where the other nine out of ten drivers would have not have pulled this off without being rescued.
Correct Casper! We completely agree. infact we wrote an article on this reader story here: www.sa4x4.co.za/crazy-ignorant-or-just-plain-luck-local-man-puts-his-toyota-hilux-to-the-test-and-found-himself-in-deep-water/
"Toyota, taking you to new frontiers "
Absolutely! AND getting you to your destination. ;)
No skill here! Stupidity and 100% luck was a great combination. 😜
Yeah! Luck is often the difference between tears and smiles. :D
Is the car still drivable if so, im getting myself a Toyota bakkie
Absolutely Tshepo. But remember, it is extremely likely that this vehicle has been modified with many aftermarket 4x4 accessories such as suspension upgrades, tyres, snorkel, bash plates (under amour), lift kits, etc... No standard production 4x4 vehicle is ready to tackle this level of river crossing without it. Much in the same way that an ice skater needs ice skating boots before going on ice... 4x4 vehicles that begin overlanding must be equipped to do so.
Get a Jimny it would float across...😁
@@cr03bar haha! We really enjoyed this bit of sarcasm. if a car floats, what control would you have over the vehicle? You need the wheels to touch the bottom of the river in order to get traction and control. So that you can propel and steer yourself out of the river hazard. 99% of all vehicles lost to rivers was due to driver errors. Please don't be that guy! Oh...And for the record, we are also very big Jimny fans! :D
@@SA4x4online Thank you for the information. I was wondering how he managed. It's still impressive though. 🎉
@@yolandagaweses7238 Absolutely Yolanda. it can be difficult to spot all the vehicle upgrades from this video alone. However any standard production vehicle without these upgrades, would be dead in the water. Please stay tuned to our channel for more information and advice on when, where and why to get your vehicle upgraded to an overlanding rig. :)
Another great commercial for Toyota👍🏾. The first was in 2013 when it was used to move the Space shuttle, Endeavor, through some narrow streets in Los Angeles to the Science Museum. It was an awesome thing to watch.
There is no Luck here, the diver is brilliant at grear set, and steady acceleration...just brilliance!! I'd be happy to learn a thing or 2 from the driver
Thanks Beezwax! We did tell the driver to invite us when he goes on his next trip, so that we could distinguish the difference between luck, skill and assess his vehicle upgrades. 🤣🤣
This is what we say, " 'n Boer maak 'n plan" It is about being wise and using common sense. Excellent manoevering of the vehicle. Maybe Toyota. I don't know.
But I think Excellent driving skills and support from everyone else.

master piece.....
very well recovered! Even if its by hook or by crook! ;)
Great Toyota commercial... They should pay you
Even better than that! they let us test and use their vehicles for our reviews on our website! :D
saving money for the ferry 😁😁its the driver from scotland ?
I’m impressed!
I don't understand how you drive in to a low traction situation, pulling a caravan in 2H when you should atleast be in 4H 😂 he wanted to put himself in problems that's for sure.
I didn't see the 'nearly' part...there was never any trouble...
He has the air tube for his carburetor so as long as the current isn't to strong to carry him away he's fine. Mud is always a challenge but he did great!
Thanks Renate, Are you referring to the snorkel feeding his air intake? or are your referring to Carburetor Emulsion sleeve inside the carb? Yes! mud is always a going concern when it gets into your engine bay. We always advise a quick wash off with a soft high pressure hose afterwards in clean water. Do not use sea water. EVER.
@@SA4x4online isn't the snorkel more for dust and it doesn't mean his new wadding depth is that high?
@@collinphiri910 the air filter is for the dust.. its called a snorkel for a reason
@@B-squiggy lol no need to be sarcastic. I'm just trying to establish if he did his engine any favors and also find out what else is at risk of failing doing such a maneuver?
This is amazing, he gets out without using 4x4, just alfter he got stuck he use the 4x4.
Buy a Land cruiser. That's it bro.
Which model? 4L petrol DC? or the 4.5L D V8 D/C ?
These are the type of ppl i like
Gd6 has more power torque and better power to weight ratio
The land cruiser won't have made it. That a Diesel Hilux one of the greatest off road vehicles for Africa
If the front wheels weren't turning, does that mean it literally got out of the deep on 4×2?😅
As we say here in Australia, "Too much gear and no idea! "
Hahahaha!
That's a rather catchy saying. We might have to use that line in our article. ;) What would you have done differently?
Maybe engaging 4 wheel drive *before* attempting something incredibly dumb, comes to mind..
@@cjwest9094 Was wondering if that was the cause of the problem. So much hype and excitement over a silly oops
all the gear and no idea
Well he made it didn't he👏👏👏👏
Toyota never go wrong
Oh! for sure!
It's a TOYOTA- Regte bakkie, even a 5year old boy will tell u
HAHAHA! You recall their adverts very well Harold! We recall the Toyota advert that aired about 4 years ago when a house wife asked her husband to go make her a sandwich after a day out in his bakkie. We will see if we can share the link with you. :D
The Japanese says, “you’re welcome”.
LOL
that is proper off-road driving skillz right there in a Hilux
I wonder if the Ineos or the Rivian could take this abuse 🤔
I wonder 🤔 🤣🤣🤣
We would say Ineos might stand a change BUT we haven't driven their factory production vehicle yet. So we're unsure what modifications it could have to perform this exact route. We have motivated it from our side though. so hopefully we can do a similar test soon. Which we can release to our subscribers.
how did he end up there in the first place?
Hi Andre, allegedly the vehicle driver was heading to Botswana with his family for a short vacation.
Here is a link to the full free article on our website: www.sa4x4.co.za/crazy-ignorant-or-just-plain-luck-local-man-puts-his-toyota-hilux-to-the-test-and-found-himself-in-deep-water/
Because he is an idiot. All to avoid paying 150 pula
He clearly didn't want to pay the 150 Pula (or something like that) to use the ferry that you can see in the background.
@@AlexH-wq3vq In our first conversation with the videographer, the witness stated that the 4x4 vehicle had already slid off the nose of the pontoon ferry. Which is what prompted this emergency route.
Botswana is a great safe country full of fun..so is our rivers.. it was jst a test. he ddint buy water from that lady who sit by the road. Nxt tym you shud... You will blessed all the way...hahaha Great skills... i love my country.
Its a Toyota, it was never in trouble. Just providing entertainment for the people watching.
What a car
100% overlanding machine! :D
Toyota is one hell of a company though
So this guy thought he was too smart to use the ferry. Next time won't be so lucky
yeah, we believe he inadvertently drove over the stop line of the ferry, which is why he had to do this type of sudden 4x4 recovery. the only facts on hand are on our article on our website www.sa4x4.co.za
Well we all know of the maintenance that will have to be done now,
Please share Ian! We would love all our newbie followers to learn just what overlanding is all about!
🤣 is called TOYOTA you do no maintenance after driving like these.Dont do this in VW Amarok
@@thapelovincent1184 Thanks Thapelo! nice to hear you again buddy ;) yes, the vehicle was still drivable after the swim. BUT you will have to rinse the engine bay and interior with fresh water to prevent further long term damage. Remember vehicles weren't designed to have mud, dirt and sand in the engine bays.. Which can cause problems with mechanisms that turn, cavitate or need a decent amount of grease for smooth operation. Cars weren't designed to be submarines. ;) One thing we can comment for sure is that if this driver doesn't rinse off soon, he will be in for a costly lesson shortly on vehicle hygiene. HAHA
Toyota never dies
These hilux's are absolute beasts
Can only smile at all the pro toyota comments. Just a very lucky person(read idiot) in a situation that could have gone so very wrong in an instant. Consider yourself very lucky that you got away unscathed.
As a wise man called Mungo once said: "if you want to cross a river, use a @&$©¥{∆£|®✓™ boat!" A team traveling from Morocco to Cape Town in brand new 70 Series TLC's, had to replace six differentials three months after their return. Oil seals on the axle ends are designed to keep oil in, not water out. Their stupid look-rough trucks had rather tiny, inadequate diff breathers. The factory didn't fit proper ones. Even ASPW had to spend a small fortune in installing proper breathers to his then brand new Troopy. Cannot the manufacturer use savvy and install proper components like on some Patrols and all Geländewagens?
Was he lucky or the bakkie nd driver are capable?
We think it was a bit of both to be honest. At one point in the video it seemed like the vehicle recovery was on a knife's edge!
Lucky
He wants to use that boat that’s in the background not this TOYBOTA.
So we're just going to ignore what the guy said @1:18?
If it was American vehicles that was going to be the end of the story.
I always tell people that there's Range Rover and Toyota in the World!!!!
We dont see many range rovers on the Kalahari roads these days. Unless we're not looking properly. We would love to see how a Landy would tackle this obstacle.
@@SA4x4online it takes it very easy. Its born for such.....Only Ranger rover and Toyota. Only Toyota and Range Rover
The real beast!!
This is what happens when you enable "beast" mode. haha
Ford and Amarok drivers still can't believe this...😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣
Hulix is king and the best.Toytota are good bakkies.Let the hulix show ford how its done
You people are nuts. And distoying habitat on top of it justvsonyou can prove some thing.
Good thing he was in a toyota. They are beasts
Today we have rice that floats until it gets traction.
HAHAHAHAHHAAHHA!
were you dodging to pay boat man?you drove smart but here in botswana they will arrest you for not engaging that boatman
Only in a Toyota........
Boteti River, Khumaga entrance into Makgadikgadi National Park,
Powerful Engine
Absolutely! its very common for Toyota owners to tow boats, caravans, trailers and even sail boats! Toyota engines are one of the best in SA in our opinion.
Big truck, big trailer, big ego. Nuff said.
Oh whot a feeling hilux living up to its name allmost unstoppable
A man met a plan...
yeah! common sense vs experience. it worked well for him at the end of the day.
Powerful!
Why!?!?!?!?
Not sure this is in Botswana.
Net so!!!
He got away with it......Gelukkig, maar, dit is wat verwag word van 'n Toyota. Dankie vir die Vid.

Did he even manage to keep the interior dry?!
But the water didn't go inside the car 🤔
Crazy frkn safas. Awesome from NZ
Thanks Aukland Today! We should have an overlanding trophy between our two great countries! Now that we have Terrain Tamer here in SA, it would be a much fair-er fight. lol.
I can't do this really for what

That was not even almost a disaster
Guts on place
But I have a snorkel! 🤣😬

That's insane
Toyota, whether it's Toyota Cruiser or Hilux, there is just this engineering fortitude and tenacity in Toyota brands that defeat terrains.
