Never thought anybody would get around to this.
I've been waiting for this song to appear, too!! One of the BEST songs ever recorded. He thought so too lol 😁
macker33 Oh Yes cannot skip the great ones 😉😉😉😉
Check out their songs "Draggin' the Line", "Crystal Blue Persuasion" and "Mony Mony" All Great songs!
Draggin The Line!! 🙌
Taun I listened to all of these great tunes as a kid. Never realized all of them where by the same group!! Very cool 😎
"Sugar on Sunday" , "I Think We're Alone Now", "Sweet Cherry Wine" and "Ball of Fire"
Every one of their songs makes me feel summer
Oh yes. All 3 are fantastic!
THE LONG VERSION!!! Every once and a while the radio stations would play this version and we'd yell "The long version!!!".
Yesssss!!!
Yes....the long version.
Right. LoL. Don't get me wrong, I like the radio edit, but the song in its entirety is soooooooo much better. Iron Butterfly: In Da Gada Da Vita is another great example of that.
I maybe only heard it twice before
The good version
"I Think We're Alone Now", "Hanky Panky", "Mirage" and "Sweet Cherry Wine"
My four favs also!!
Oh, I love Mirage especially. It's so bizzarely futuristic-sounding! If you told me it was, say, by a New Wave band from 1983, I would probably believe you.
I loved Ball of Fire and Do Something to Me. Not big hits but I loved them.
And "Mony Mony"
"Hanky Panky" and the Power Pop "Mony Mony" Is very inferior to the *Psychedelic Pop masterpiece* that "Crimson and Clover" is.
'Draggin the Line' - Tommy James and the Shondells
Draggin the line was by Tommy James, without the Shondells. I think they broke up. There was nothing much after that.
@@Amen.22 That's true, but he did produce the song: Tighter Tighter in '72.
Definitely an oldie but a goodie!
Dragging the Line is my Favorite ♥️
"Sugar On Sunday" , "I Think We're Alone Now", "Sweet Cherry Wine", "Ball of Fire" & "Draggin' The Line"
Sooo very happy that you are reacting to this band, they are phenomenal & IMO very underrated & overlooked
Great reaction! Crimson and Clover came out in 1968. It was on the US charts for 16 weeks, and hit the #1 spot. It's an awesome song.
Jayvee, so glad I ran across you. You’re playing so much incredible music. Your versatility in your tastes is awesome! Always smiling and positive. Man, you’re really helping a lot of people through a tough time. Favorite part of my day.. pour a bourbon and check out some of your reactions. Keep it up man!! You’re truly great at this!
Joan Jett did a cover of this. And there ya go, here's another lady to check out. Joan Jett. Her biggest hit was I Love Rock n Roll.
Yes! Said the same!
Her cover of this is so hot!
Love Joan Jet!!!
Tommy James “draggin’ the line.” Definitely! 💛✌️
Great acid trip music, trippy song...lol. The good ole days...
😃 Yes lord😅
😎
Yes. Pure psychedelia.
@@murrayfeldman2243 Pop Psychedelic, also called "Sunshine Pop". The *use of Heavy Tremolo effect* Is unique.
Crystal Blue Persuasion is my favorite song. Seems so relevant to today.
Draggin The Line is my favorite. Thanks.
What a great song. Tommy James has quite a story of his life, love his music. Next up should be Crystal Blue Persuasion, Draggin’ the Line, I Think We’re Alone Now, Mony Mony.
@Dave I'm really looking forward to the movie about his life.
Like your reaction! Great tune.
Tommy James was one of the first to use a fuss box and ecko boxes on the vocals!
Tommy James and the Shondell's had a really great career. Tommy wrote the majority of their songs with collaborators. Great songs are CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION, SWEET CHERRY WINE, MONY MONY and I THINK WE'RE ALONE NOW. Many covers have been done of the last two I listed. You won't be disappointed in any of them!
Tommy James and The Shondells have so many wonderful songs. Try '"Draggin the line" / "Crystal Blue Persuasion" 1970 live.
*Draggin The Line* total badass song. Make your body rock and foot heavy on the accelerator.
Yes!!
Definitely!!
True story.
I grew up on this music! Love it.
Great oldie but goodie!
A pleasure to watch you actually hearing music. Comparing the notes and beats to the canvas of silence on which they were laid. Your joy is genuine and contagious. Have a nice holiday my brother. 🐀
My favorite Tommy James & The Shondell's song is a hit they had near the end of their career called "Chrystal Blue Persuasion." Check it out. Another good one is "Sweet Cherry Wine." It's amazing how many hits these guys actually had (lot's). One final one, "I Think We're Alone Now" which I think was their second hit. All great songs.
Their song "Draggin' the line"... it's a must hear... and just, to me anyway, a feel good song. Perfect for a chill weekend.
One of my all.time favourite guitar solos... downright criminally underrated....
There was a time where a lot of the music that came out in the sixties and early seventies were referred to as psychedelic or hippie trippy yes that's a great song!
Hippie Trippy music to go with the hippy dippy weatherman segments!!! ✌😁😄
@@jankypop-a-matic58 hippy dippy weatherman now you're talkin George Carlin LOL
It’s awesome
This is why I fell in love with this channel, you check out such obscure songs that I would never expect people to really be tuning into. I heard this song around the time I first dropped acid and I was outside at 3am listening to this song dancing with my dog.
Crystal blue persuasion is not just my favorite Tommy James song but one of my favorite all-time songs ever.
Yeah 🌟🥰🥰⚡️🌟🥰🌟💥💥🤩🤩🤗🤗Thank you
James had a hit I Think We're Alone Now, He recorded the music backwards and wrote Mirage.
Really??? ☺️
Definitely check out Crystal Blue Persuasion and another fun song, I Think We're Alone Now. Tommy James WAS very innovative.
I remember hearing this at my grandma house when I was about 10 lol She would let us listen to the pop station 😄
Love your reaction to this one. I recall one of the first times I heard this song on the radio while riding in my Dad's car. In that one part of the song I thought we were getting a bad radio reception. Of course, I quickly realized it was how the song went. Then one time we took a trip out of state, Crimson and Clover came on and we were actually getting bad radio reception. That was it. My dad shut the radio off. Classic tune! It grows on you.
When this first came out I lived across the street from a hamburger drive in and when I me best friend was there I knew because she played this on the jukebox so I would no she was waiting.
Great memory ☺️
I love how it juxtaposes psychedelia while echoing the 50's.
James wrote Hanky Panky at 14 and several years later it became a mega-hit in Pittsburgh. James got a phone call and went directly to The Burgh where he met a local band The Shondells. He was directly signed to Roulette Records owned by the Mafia
Slow dancing to this as a young teen, great memory.
Did you enjoy it great song and Crystal Blue Persuasion 😘😘😘😘sweet Cherry Wine , I think we’re alone now, Mony Mony
Don't forget "Hanky Panky"
@@garylindsey5174 And Sugar on Sunday.
The group: Traffic -songs Mr Fantasy , Who knows what tomorrow may bring. Classy rock music 🎶
Before you leave this Earthly existence ... you must hear "Crystal Blue Persuasion".
My best friends mother was the manager for..The Five Stair Steps .play Ohh ohh Child
Love that song!
This is what you would call "ear candy". Not just a song, it's an audio experience. Lots of interesting sounds to hold your attention. One you can always get something new out of on each listen.
My fav song since 1969 is by Tommy James and the shondells. Crystal Blue Persuasion has stood the test of time for me . I was 8 when i first heard it and its still my Fav ❣️
Crystal Blue Persuasion. I Think We're Alone Now, big hits for them in the 60s also
Used to roller skate to this back in the 60’s-awesome song!
"Crystal Blue Persuasion" is a must to react to by Tommy James and The Shondells.
Back in the day I remember roller skating to this song every Friday night; skating as fast as I could go!
The 60's and 70's music was so diverse and told a story
It had a best, rythum, you could dance or sing along.
I find none of these in qualities in today's music
So much sunshine and positivity
My first love bought me this album. This song still brings tears to my eyes. Not on the subject of Tommy James and the Shondells, you really need to check out Harry Nilsson "Without You" Amazing doesn't cover it.
I love this song. Great music
Wow, you finally got around to Tommy James & The Shondells! Love them! Some of their best is Crystal Blue Persuasion, Draggin’ the line and Sweet Cherry Wine!
Crystal Blue Persuasion, yo!
Definitely try out "Draggin' the Line" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion". "Mony, Mony" is anther good one.
I think we're alone now & Crystal Blue Persuasion are 2 of my favorites from them
This song blew me away when it came out. Timeless!
Great group and tune!! Joan Jett did a great cover of this song in the early 80s. Jay, you will LOVE that cover! That's worth a listen. Also, check out "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James and the Shondells. Awesome tune. Recently, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day did an excellent cover of that with his sons.
I am Sooo glad you did what others didn't do and reacted to the full-length version and not the radio edited version which cuts out solo guitar jam in the middle. Oddly the song was not finished, He had writers block for a repeated verse in the song. So he invited a friend over to help him fill in the trouble spots. He ran through the song for his friend and in place for the words he could not find he placed his two favorite colors Crimson & Clover. when he finished his friend said what's the problem? He explained he needed words to replace the words "Crimson and Clover" with something because it doesn't make sense. His friend said two colors are a perfect thing because people associate the phrase Crimson and Clover with some meaning personal to them. And the song was born. Tommy James gives this explanation in a written insert in an album. I thought it was cool... Wait... I shouldn't use the word cool, Cool wasn't a common catchphrase until the TV show Happy days. I thought it was The-most, Far-out, Groovy-man, an absolutely Righteous explanation.
They were ahead of their time......this was produced in the late 60's if memory serves correctly.
A band that had very little chart success in the UK. They hit the UK No1 spot with Mony Mony in 1968 and were No 38 with Hanky Panky in 1966 that made No 1 in the States.
My dad had a cabin in Big Bear California and I remember hearing this song. I was only 8 or 9. Thanks for the memories.
Crystal blue persuasion and this song was the hippie acid anthem back in the 60s. Tripping on acid LSD when you hear it stoned it takes you to another dimension of reality far beyond the normal. But of course those that continued to take LSD ended up physically. Emotionally or mentally insane. The spiritual ecstasy it induced only lasted as long as the drug was still in their system. Some committed suicide.
All love in isolation,
Al
Dragging the Line was his ode to Cocaine and Crystal Blue was LSD. It was the times!
@@loribeckwith5993 Crystal Blue persuasion was about Tommy's experience after hearing Billy Graham preach...look it up. I heard him tell the story himself several times. That song is so beautiful and one that stands the test of time :)))
Love your reactions. Check out Three Degrees singing "When Will I See You Again" You will fall in love.
When Will I See You Again is an all time favorite from my teens!!!!
So soothing.
Absolutely!!!
Ooh, I love that song! Putting that in my queue right now.
Oh, and Laughter in the Rain!
I turned sixty two yesterday. All I remember about my 12 year old bday party at a roller skating rink is Roller skating to crimson and clover
Tommy James and the Shondells are terrific.
Got to got hear My Baby Does The Hanky Panky
Brings back memories of us guys tooling around in my friend Elliot’s red Buick Opel Cadet with the long version of this song playing on 8 track tape. Right in the middle of the song it would suddenly click over to the next track to continue playing!
All I can say is nice Jay very nice keep it up let's go 😊😊💕💖
This was THE song of 1969.I was 15 and grooved to this song every day, over and over!
I think we’re alone now!
Great choice!
This is for sure one of my top 10 tunes of all time. You nailed it with the number of changes in pace in the tune.
That last part with the broken vocals is my favorite part. Also he recorded it with a record label that was mobbed
up and screwed him out of massive royalties. It was many years later until TJ got his royalties. Glad to see you
enjoyed this very unique song. All the best.
Awesome! Hey but I thought you said you were taking today off Jay??? Glad you're here though! 💯
Joan Jett's version is also memorable. One of my favorite female artists.
Definitely!
My dad used to have a cassette of psychedelic rock songs from the 60s that he used to keep in the boat when I was a kid. We'd cruise around the lake playing this, Incense and Peppermints, Spill the Wine, Green Tambourine and more. I thought we were the coolest.
Other good psychedelic rock songs are Itchycoo Park, Season of the Witch, Hurdy Gurdy Man, White Rabbit, Happy Island and Magic Carpet Ride.
They were a popular Group in the 1960's. It was a Common Practice to have The Lead Singer's Name separated from their Partners. Diana Ross & The Supremes, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Archie Bell & The Drells. In the 1980's the Songs reached a whole new generation of Fans. Joan Jet & The Blackhearts did their Version of this Song, Tiffany (The Mall Signer) did "I Think We're Alone Now' as did Girls Aloud The most successful Girlband to come out of Reality TV. Billy Idol did "Mony Mony". Also if you can check out Crystal Blue Persuasion.
I saw Tommy James perform on stage in 2015 at the Meadow Brook theatre north of Detroit. He still had that voice!! My favorites were some early songs like “Getting Together” “Mirage” and then “Dragging The Line”! Went down to the stage with my friend and Tommy reached down and gave me a guitar pic with his name on it. After the concert, I had my picture taken with him and got his autograph. Had a fun time that night!! 😊❤️🎵
Yes thank you for your reaction!! This song is so good ❤️♥️
This song came out in 1968. Says '76 for the copy right but I remember hearing this in the 60s at the height of the Haight Ashbury fame and flower power. Takes me back. Most of the music was to blow your mind.
Always brings back memories of my very first girlfriend, when I would go to her house this would be playing on her stereo one of those big console type that looked like a piece furniture with the built in speakers, two of my favorite things to play with girls and stereos 😂
Love this song 💕 ball of fire in the sky is awesome too 😊thank you for sharing your thoughts with us 💕Hugs and Light ☀️🌝
Shocking Blue Venus is an incredible song too.Timeless
I cannot believe this man isn't in the rock and roll hall of fame.
Sit back and enjoy.
I'm actually starting a clover lawn
The Crimson clover are beautiful
Thank you for appreciated this song
This song is such a timeless vibe!!!! So many feelings
The guitar effects in this song are EXCEPTIONAL. 👍👍👍😎
I wish I could experience all this great music for the first time again....
Has anybody done "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens? That's a fun one....
This is my first time hearing the long version, I'm used to the single version without the long guitar break. Loses some impact I think but still a classic, always loved it. I remember seeing them sing this on the Ed Sullivan Show, my first exposure to psychedelia.
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts did a cover of this.
You are bringing it today, my friend! Tommy James was awesome and this song represents psychedelia.
This group has so many awesome songs! You need to listen to them all! You won't be disappointed! ❤
A huge radio hit back in the late 60s! We were so fortunate to have the best music ever as teenagers back then! This brings back some wonderful memories! Thanks for doing this!
I think he's trying to tell her he wants to 'roll her over in the clover'... LOL Never caught that before!!
Yes, Tommy James was very innovative and way ahead of his time!
I saw him this year, 2/28/20 my celebration of retirement. Sooo fun. Strawberry Festival in Plant City Fl. 2 weeks later concerts how we knew it where done. He was awesome and I couldn’t wait until he played Crystal Blue Persuasion. They played this song in Breaking Bad. He is one awesome musician. He has a story.
The single version was 3.75 minutes, the album 6.5 minutes. This was one of the first songs recorded on 16 track tape. There was a drummer, and a bass, all the other sounds you hear were by Tommy James. This was an unfinished song, they were still working on it. They made a rough cut so the record label could check it out. The tremolo effects on his voice in the last part was made by plugging a mic into a guitar amp. A few days after the rough cut, Tommy went to WLS in Chicago for an interview. He had a copy of the unfinished song with him and after the interview, they talked him into playing it for them, off the air. Unknown to Tommy, they recorded it. Shortly after that, they played it on the air. The record producer, asked them to stop playing it, because it was not finished. But after lots of positive reactions from listeners, they decided to rush it into production. Later they made a longer album version. During recording of the album version, there was a slight error in the speed, resulting in a small drop in pitch during the added guitar solo sections. It was released with the flaw. In 1991 a CD version was released called cellophane symphony, the CD corrected the speed with digital technology. So if you want the long version, the way it was supposed to sound, get the CD, Crimson and Clover/ Cellophane Symphony.
One of their best, which considering their many hits, is saying something. This song is a work of art.
"Crimson and Clover" was released in late 1968 as a rough mix after a radio station leaked it. It spent 16 weeks on the U.S. charts, reaching number one in the United States (in February 1969) and other countries. The single has sold 5 million copies, making it Tommy James and the Shondells' best-selling song. It has been covered by many artists including Joan Jett and Prince.
A very good family friend was the drummer, Peter Lucia, and he co-wrote the song. Peter was like an uncle to me and my sister and unfourtunately he passed away at young age. He was an amazingly nice guy.
Loved this song and loved this group so much his music made you happy and you just feel good when his music plays I was a kid and just the happy times of being a child and feeling great
I love how much you love music - I'm sure you will love The Stranglers - Golden Brown. Peace.
