What a great character!.........And a class act, his refusal to talk politics as having nothing to do with making pictures should be a shining example to Hollywood celebrities of today.
On one hand I can see asking it as it pertains to decisions of portrayals and choices on themes for a director who features natives very often in his pictures. I think the interviewer was really driving at if there is a suggestive attitude toward them and their fate that Ford has portrayed in his movies (which judging by his answer that's a non factor). On the other hand I of course love his response which says that the notion that he should have an opinion is absurd. The general feel from Ford is that basically this picture making is just a line of work, one he does even if the picture isn't that good. It's a "labor of work" he's quoted as saying. It's not about statements and opinions and such. It's refreshing.
James Cagney stood up to John Ford, which is why he left Mister Roberts. Ford was a proud irishman and would talk shit to just about everyone, but when he did it to fellow Irishman Cagney, whom was an amateur boxer, beat up gangsters and loved keeping the crew happy, Cagney flipped and said he was gonna kick his head in. Ford just walked off and never came back.
the greatest american director of all times, even thou he got 6 oscars none of them were for western movies, that made America known in the world.

Why do you post this on every John Ford video?
He sounded rather like W.C. Fields . . . .
If you're hearing is distorted by a hit of acid I suppose.
