    Nice, love the .40 and carry the UW 135gr JHP In my G27 Gen5. The .40 is under appreciated by most, sadly. For those wondering, 1500 fps with a 135gr .40 isn't a big deal, Hodgdon load data shows just shy of 1500 fps from a 4" barrel and I've done it. Yeah 1500 fps from a 5" seems high to many, but it's closer to "true" .40 S&W potential than what is typically offered (~1350 fps). The .40 ain't no joke. A note on that 357 SIG, 124gr usually denotes a .355" bullet designed for 9mm velocities, that's probably why it broke up so bad, whereas 125gr .355" bullets are usually designed for 357 SIG.

    • @kennethferguson4283

      The 357 Sig didn't break up any more than the 135gr .40.

    • @SDGlock23
      @SDGlock23 11 місяців тому +1

      The 135gr .40 has low sectional density and the Nosler bullet is pretty basic which causes fragmenting at those speeds and effects penetration. The 357 SIG bullet (a 9mm JHP) is being pushed a bit faster than it should be for optimal penetration. Either one would no doubt be effective.

    Incredible!!! The most impressive loads in 40 S&W & 357 Sig I can remember seeing on the channel! These 2 rounds may be unsurvivable, They are both more impressive in stretch and tear as any 357 Mag ammo I've seen in real Knox gel. When looking at the slo Mo footage they both look like hot defense loads from a 5.56 rifle

    Outstanding! Both are equally devastating! They both just dumped a boatload of energy early and still jacked things up for much of their travel. The 40 impressively held it's own here but all things considered we might give the edge to the 357. But it isn't much difference. The 40 gets the win for expansion size and likely remained weight. It did give the advantage in energy #s in this test. I run a 4.25" M&P 40 so I will lose a bit of velocity and energy. Great test as always and equally great results. Many thanks.

    My word, both of those rounds are devastating. Az, if you were to look at the slow-mo's you would swear you are looking at the impact and result from a 5.56 rifle shot. That that damage came from a handgun is exceptionally impressive. I know that the "one shot stop" adage is overused however I think a hit from either one of those rounds would not be survivable. Excellent work as usual, AZ.

      @Mbartel500 11 місяців тому +1

      Right you are , sir. And that's exactly why I switched to the “lowly” 9mm for my edc emergency defense tool. I don't want a prosecuting attorney convincing a firearms ignorant jury that I used a weapon with such devastating power that the bad guy could never survive the wound, therefore my intention, and plan was to brutally kill any person that I shot. I know….to you and me that is total BS. But make no mistake, the prosecution will use whatever tricks, deception, lies, and smoke and mirrors it takes to convince a jury that I never intended to just stop the attack. I became a self appointed judge, jury AND executioner. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury….this man (pointing at me) is a vigilante, who thinks he can take the law into his own hands and kill a man before that man is found guilty of the alleged crime. Yeah…surviving the physical attack is the easy part. Surviving the legal attack not so much. A person could face financial ruin just trying to stay out of prison during the criminal lawsuit, but then the family of the attacker will bring a civil lawsuit, which could very likely involve paying restitution to the family. Sound far fetched? In the absence of video or eye witnesses, it's just my word against the corrupt legal system. Worse case scenario….the attacker has no criminal history. Now you're really screwed.

    The 40cal/135gr Nosler is a long-time fav of many. I discovered it when UW was out of stock on its 357sig/125gr gold dots. Very comparable on paper and, even though UW isn't now loading GDs, it's nice to see this gel test of 2 Noslers. I am, however, more than a little surprised on the 40/135's speed when its published speed is 1400fps. Not surprised at the signs of over-pressure on the case.

    That primer bulge is a deal killer for me, at least with that batch of 135gr .40s. Luckily my 135 grs are from a different batch and hopefully loaded to a safer pressure. Then the 5 inch barrel is going to increase the velocity as well. I suspect that out of 4 and 4.5 inch barrels a normal pressure batch would be very close to the advertised 1400 fps mark. At this velocity and higher the 357 Sig shows no signs of over pressure.

    If the .40 had overpressure signs, I would not bet on its bolt thrust staying in the design limits of regular firearms. This makes the round problematic - practice with it may wear the gun out pretty quickly. Plus there is the risk of kaboom - .40 guns are notorious for their unsupported chambers. I wonder how many sigma confidence level was established in the safety tests.
    The .357 Sig round looks much closer to its caliber specs, plus the bottleneck obviates the need for an unsupported chamber. Along with the results in gel this shows how bad of an idea a straight walled case is in semi-automatics.

    Good test but it just goes to show: SPEER, GET OFF YOUR BUTTS AND GET THOSE GOLD DOTS BACK OUT INTO THE WILD! Personally I think both of these are right on the edge of fail as neither one penetrated to my personal minimum of 16 to 18." I would pick the Sig as the winner here, even if just by a bit. These are great if all your defense shot are straight on but I don't think real life works that way. These might be ok for home defense since they are both so explosive on impact. I think it was Marshall & Sanow that pointed out that fragments left in the wound track contribute nothing to wounding, only those that veer off the track have the ability to cause secondary wounds off the track... which is exactly what the Sig round did, which is why I give it the edge. Everyone has their own standards and truthfully, I wouldn't feel bad with either of these rounds in my pistol... that would be if I had a 40 or 357 Sig, which I do not!
    Great test, keep up the great work!

      Haven't done it yet. Next time I go out I will be testing it in the shorty barrels. Weather's been bad here so as soon as it clears up I have it out.

    That stuff will tear your gun up. I doubt the target will know the difference between underwood and regular corresponding factory loads.
