I live less than an hour away from Ft. Ross, in Sebastopol. The Fort along with that whole stretch of coastline with its State and Regional Parks is pure magic for me. My heart and soul are forever tied to that area. I was photographing my little boy in that giant eucalyptus not long ago too 😉 Enjoying your cool channel 🙏🙏
Very Cool!!! I had the pleasure of sleeping over night at Fort Ross with my daughters 4th grade class. California History classes. It was sooooooo cold at night, but we were there in April and the Whales were putting on a show. We had Mass by candlelight in he chapel... Great memories!
@@jbenziggy Hi! Yes, we slept in the buildings. I slept in the guard tower that looks over the ocean. We had a little general store set up, dressed in character. That was 25 years ago, and my sons class stayed at Mission Adobe in Petaluma. Great memories, thanks for posting this!
We used to take field trips to Fort Ross, I remember the fire in 1970, when I was Junior High school, and 3 years later when the historic designation was regained I was in High School, like the Adobe Fort in Petaluma, the grounds of the Fort was just a small part of property and the Russians own a major portion of the land, and bordered John Sutters property.
I remember visiting Fort Ross as a 5 year old. There was a display then of what damage the 1906 earthquake caused with photographs of log buildings toppled over. Those photos stuck in my young head. They reminded me of my toy Lincoln Logs. 😊 We used to go to Bodega Bay, too. The tidal pools were always fascinating. Thanks for rekindling fond California memories.
I homeschooled 5 kids for over 20 years. We actually went to this place. I Love how Sarah is Always Ready to Explore First ❤ even tho you say she doesn't really like History. he!! he!! he!! I Hope she's getting Hooked 😊 because she is way more Curious then you are Jeff haha...you Really do Make a Good Team. Thank you Sarah for ringing that bell. (Reminds me of a song title...."You can ring my bell, ring my bell") The overtones were beautiful. That might be A=440 !! If you are visiting up and down the CA coast, go north and hike over to the lighthouse at Cabrillo Pt. south of Ft. Bragg. I photographed the sunset there once and captured a nice image of the lighthouse beam with all the reds and oranges! Thanks again for a nice video......Russell D.
I had visiting Fort Ross and driving the entire Scenic Highway One on my "bucket list", but low and behold, the durn thang done sprung a leak. Thanks for a view of what I missed.
I have always had an interest in Russian history, but I knew nothing about it's presence in California. Thank you for another great video. I really appreaciate all of your information. I also must add, you do live in a really beautiful state. Living at the other end of the country, I have only ever seen the Atlantic Ocean, and I must admit it does not come close to the beauty of the Pacific. Again thanks to both of you for sharing the incredible history from your part of this great country.
Since you did not know about Fort Ross, then you probably also do not know that during the struggle for US independence, two Russian squadrons came to the shores of America to help the Americans and stood in the way of the ships of the British and French. The British and French did not dare to fight the Russians and were forced to retreat.
Great episode! That’s a great place for a Fort. Beautiful place. The Russian writing on the bell said Please Don’t Ring The Bell 😁. “ The starfish know what they are doing Sarah “ Ha Ha Ha! The random grave markers might be graves that were found with ultrasound. They use ultrasound to find underground utilities.
Hi! I was worried a bird would get it or it would dry before the tide came back. Boy those things have a grip! I'm sure it's just fine! Thanks for watching!
The Russian Empire also had 3 forts in 3 Hawaii islands and they had a fort in Sagallo (today Djibouti, East-Africa) where they have a little fight with the French...
Back in 94 my daughters and I did an overnight field trip with Oak Manor elementary school Ukiah Ca. We played the parts of the community with everyone having jobs.
Went to Fort Ross with my parents back in 1977. Back then it looked a lot like your black and white photos that you have put in the video. They were collecting money to rebuild the fort I’m glad to see that they had finished it. Thanks for the videos great job.
The introduction to this video just brought on a smile, Then Sarah finding the the bell that came across very loud ,The scenery is stunning and the star fish rescue attemp was another smile Thankyou very another great history lessen :)
The bell was sooo loud it made me gasp and hold my breath each time! The starfish were a neat surprise for me too. If there are critters, I'll find them! Thanks for watching!

LOVE THE RINGING OF THE BELL, SARAH! THANKS! MY WIFE &I VISITED THERE ON OCT. 15TH 2021! LIKED IT VERY MUCH! VISITED THE WINDMILL AT THE WEST END OF THE PARKING LOT! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO, JEFF!
The Rotchev House is the only original building, except for the roof which was restored after an arson fire in 1970. It was rebuilt by local artisans over time, using mostly traditional tools and methods
Hi Sarah, I'm glad to see you. You gave a great tour of the fort and the star fish. I didn't know that they are red. Jeff has to get you a bell like that one to hang in your yard. Jeff did a great job helping you. ; ) Okay Jeff did a great job with the tour. I love hearing ocean waves. See you next Sunday.
Hi Carole! Fort Ross had so much to explore. Fun place to visit. I think I'd get in trouble with our neighbors if Jeff got me a bell, they're soooo loud! Thanks for watching!

My wife and I just visited Fort Ross this weekend celebrating our 10 yr anniversary along the Mendocino coast in Gualala, saw this place and I was blown away by how amazing Fort Ross was, alot of the buildings are open and can be walked in now as well. Here I am watching videos learning all I can now, it's so interesting to me. I will be back, so in love with the Coast.
Hi ! Awesome vlog . My grandpa came to Canada from Russia in 1903. A little detour and I could have been American. Lol. Very interesting and entertaining vlog . Ring that bell Sarah !!! Thanks 👍! Deborah Winnipeg,. Canada
What a great visitors center. With so many places closed these days I'm surprised it was open! I dare say there is no more beautiful place on the face of the earth than the coast of Northern California. Thank you for sharing.
Yes it is a very beautiful location. I think a fire swept through the area between the fort and Jenner a week or two after we left. Fires are a curse in California lately. Thanks, Barbara, for watching and commenting!
Sarah is such a sweetheart. Keep her forever. I hope the starfish made it back in the ocean at high tide. I’ll have to check this place out in June when we are visiting Cali again.
Well, I guess I was asleep in my History class the day this was taught. I had no idea (or memory) that Russians were ever in America. This lets me know I'm never too old to learn something new....Thanks Jeff and Sarah......so interesting, and the ocean is just beautiful!

Interesting. I didn’t know John Sutter once owned the fort after Russians left. I’m assuming that was before Sutters Fort in Sacramento. An interesting tidbit of info😎😎
Happy to see this place again! It's been 14 yrs or so since I've been there. Loved seeing the coast line and ocean. I would have sat on the beach and stacked up rocks too! And I would have tried to help the starfish! I enjoy your videos and subscribed a while back, I just don't leave alot of comments. Keep up the good work!
Glad you enjoyed it! And welcome to our channel! Happy to find your very nice comments! So happy to hear our visit brought back some fond memories of the fort and beach! Many thanks!
to be sure everything in that fort was a restoration, over time it costs to do it all at once, they dug out the foundations and copied through pictures, and the grave site was done by locating original plot markers and restoring them to,very nice, you have a wonderful narration voice, have you done work in that field before?
Thank you very much. I have not done any voice work until my UA-cam channel. Just never liked my voice all that much but I have grown in my confidence in the last few years.

Hi Donald! The bell was so loud it startled me but was so fun. The critters on the beach were a nice surprise too. Hope the starfish made it. Thanks for watching!
There is currently a wildfire near there. I was trying to look up where the Fort was located. I hope the firefighters can get it out before the Fort is lost.
Very beautiful experience. You picked the perfect day. Fort Ross goes on bucket list. The Europeans and English had pretty much hunted out all their native fur animals as well as chopped away most of their forests before the American Revolution. Didnt know Sir Francis claimed this land for Queen Liz..Great museum thanks for another eye opener.
What California forests were chopped away in the 18th century? There were no native fur animals left prior to the 1770’s? That doesn’t sound accurate at all. There were very few people even living in California at that time. It was an outpost of the Spanish empire. Prior to that nothing but Stone Age civilizations inhabited California
I've spent a lot of time at Fort Ross over the years. . When the fort was sold to John Sutter, he never paid the Russians for the land. . Back in the 1980's. the USSR explored legally if they had a claim to the land and could either take it back or force America to pay them for it. Never heard where that went. Suspect it was laughed out of court.
Thank you for the Fort Ross episode. I have been fortunate enough to have been there a couple of times and I love the place, well, all of Sonoma county really. I hope you get to visit there sometime when the buildings are open. I really liked the chapel, rustic though it may be.
Howdy, Texas! Thanks for watching! Yes, lots of great history on the west coast. We may not be as "old" as the east coast but fascinating history nonetheless.
Thank you for the tour, we have driven by it many times, never stopped, great job, lots of good stuff to see in the area, the Timber Cove lodge, Rivers End restaurant, great little bakery in Point Arena and some cool lighthouses
Hi! Thank you! I didn't realize that the otters and sea lion was the mission of the Russian settlers. Everyone else was coming for gold! Thanks for watching and your kind comment.
Thanks guys ! Wow, so beautiful in CA and I cherish the history work you do ! I had heard about this fort through my history research, but never read it all, this was a nice way of participating in this for me and much appreciated !!
Sarah you cracked me up with the "I don't know" why they came. I live an hour from there and never been. Seen it going up to Still Water Cove. Another interesting place they filmed a silent movie there.
Fort Ross is my favorite spot in California. We used to go there often. Now that I live out of state I haven't been back there in 20 years. It was nice to see it again. Thanks😊
My boy scout troop camped there in the early 90s. Lots of great memories. My mom probably still has pictures in a photo album. The whole fort was rebuilt near the original site. The original fort site is now occupied by Hwy 1.
Great Vlog. I learned alot. Sarah leave the star fish alone. The tide comes in and out. You two are wonderful.

Hi! Thank you! I didn't realize that the otters and sea lion was the mission of the Russian settlers. Everyone else was coming for gold! Thanks for watching and your kind comment.
Thanks guys ! Wow, so beautiful in CA and I cherish the history work you do ! I had heard about this fort through my history research, but never read it all, this was a nice way of participating in this for me and much appreciated
!!
Don’t be fooled, California is mostly a cesspool
Love this channel! Made me mad you tube wanted a rating of this episode I hit to give five stars and it took one star. Sarah is a hoot.
Thanks so much! Love your comment! Maybe you can correct the rating?
Sarah you cracked me up with the "I don't know" why they came. I live an hour from there and never been. Seen it going up to Still Water Cove. Another interesting place they filmed a silent movie there.
I knew they hunted but didn't realize that was the mission of their trip. Thanks for watching flubs and all!
Fort Ross is my favorite spot in California. We used to go there often. Now that I live out of state I haven't been back there in 20 years. It was nice to see it again. Thanks😊
Wonderful! The day we went last year was gorgeous! I bet you miss it! Maybe plan a trip out west?
Great video, thank you👍
Thanks for watching and commenting to let us know you liked it!
My boy scout troop camped there in the early 90s. Lots of great memories. My mom probably still has pictures in a photo album.
The whole fort was rebuilt near the original site. The original fort site is now occupied by Hwy 1.
I wasn't aware of this interesting piece of California's history. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great job 👍, Very interesting
Thank you! Cheers!
