Very cool that I made an impression :-) Chevelle does remind me of Tool in ways - certainly the same vibe. That's why I added a lot of stuff to the drums and made it more Danny Carey style.
Thanks everybody for your comments - all of your encouragement and kind words really mean a lot to me, and I really appreciate all of you taking time to watch and to comment. Cheers, John
Thanks man, I'm glad you (and your son) like this one. I've always wanted to take some creative liberties with one of Chevelle's songs, so this one was a lot of fun for me.
@AlainHubert Thanks much for stopping by and commenting Alain, and yes I'm very happy with these new mics. It's funny how my posture on the drums has worsened over the past few months - watching your perfect posture really made me realize I have to nip this in the bud.
man i wish i had my drum set back... it was the one thing that put me in my own world... watching this reminded me of how i used to bang on pots and pans. kick ass videos man keep it up
I logged in just to comment. Love what you've done with the song, gave it some much needed depth, especially with the repetition this song requires. Glad to see that you deviated and didn't just cover it exactly, like a robot. Keep it up man!
You have some killer fills in this. I've noticed I've started to move around the kit similar to you, gotta say you've been one of my bigger influences in the last few months.
@HeisW140 Haha, very little of my technique is intentional, and probably evolved from watching Neil Peart videos as a kid :D You mean the angle of my left hand around the 0:28 mark? I dip my hand like this when I'm playing ghost notes to prevent the butt of the stick from hitting my hand, to ensure good rebound. Basically I'm trying to free-up everything except the fulcrum and the fingers that 'dribble' the stick after a rebound. On the power strokes my hand is more parallel with the ulna.
Nice add-in's... love at 2:42 the stick flip/toss. My 10 yr old was watching over my shoulder( he's a little drummer in training) and he got a big kick out of your effortless style. Nice flow to the extras you slipped in, if I hadn't been trying to create a drum track on my recorder for this song, (many repeats in the last three days, lol), I never would have caught it.
your drums sound awsome bro....fine tuned piece of equipment....your toms are awsome and I must not forget about the Paste by the Hi-Hat.......Just awsome....!!!!!
People need to read your description ... YES! This does sound like Danny filling in for Sam. I like the clever approach and you had some interesting parts on an otherwise very straightforward drumming song. Love TOOL and Chevelle and this was a blast to see. I would love to see you play Deftones "Digital Bath". Crossing my fingers for it.
@oggydrummer92il Thanks man, and I had the same problem except with my 16 inch floor tom. It sounded tinny and weak. Surprisingly, it was a real simple fix: I replaced the feet of the floor toms with some fat ones from an old Pearl Export series floor tom. Just replacing the feet made it sound 100% better. I can't believe Gretsch sends these great drums out with such cheap hardware.
@johnkew I wouldn't dare try a stick toss - I drop them often enough as it is. Glad the Novo worked out in the kits "sound palette" for lack of a better term. Well done all round 10/10
@DrummingUpGames Thanks man! Those fills were very much Keith Moon-inspired, with the cymbal crashes in the middle of tom fills, and fills that crosscut measures. I don't hear many drummers doing that any more, except for of course Neil Peart.
I love this song! I made a whole Chevelle cd and jam out to them all the time, and you did them great justice with this cover. Amazing as allways. :] I like the Paragons, Neil Peart style haha.
Face to the Floor is a fairly new song...you seem to have caught on to the rhythm quickly. Takes talent and skill to take on a song like that and blend in your own unique beats. I approve :)
@MrIPunchHard Right on man, you got it! It's that part at 4:30 of The Pot. Damn, I thought that would take longer for somebody to guess. This is fun, maybe I'll put together a montage of beats and make a contest out of it.
@johnkew You're very welcome. If I may, I'd love to request to hear your interpretation of Clones. Loeffler has some great bass rhythms in the song, but I feel he needs to invest in some more cymbals and really expand that Carey influence. Multiple times I could hear perfect opportunities for some cymbal melodies or complex fills that really could have enhanced that song even more. Just a thought!
Honestly I almost can't believe the difference in the actual song compared to your cover. It sounds so much better than the actual drums for the song that I can't actually listen to the original yours it that much better
Absolutely fantastic cover, and I found it incredibly interesting that you had many of the same interpretations as I do. Must be the Carey influence, as I too feel Loeffler can sometimes be a little too straightforward and needs to break out a little more complexity, especially with his cymbal melodies and fills. Anyway, great cover, and I can't wait to hear more from you.
@johnkew cool. Any chance you'll do another Chevelle drum cover? The Meddler off their new album has got a pretty cool beat. so does "An evening with El Diablo". great work.
Holy shit, I was looking throught eh top 30 rock songs (trying to scab ideas for more channel hits hahaha) and I found "Chevelle Face to the floor"... and had a quick listen... I thought " Yeah I could nail that - awesome!" then from somewhere in the back of my mind the image of you playing this track emerged. I had forgotten you covered this track, but the song itself reminded me of your video. Thats quite an effect John. I didnt remember the song - just you playing it and that swivel cam.
Me again - I noticed your wrists are at a slight invert when you play - didn't notice that before.I keep my wrists pretty much straight and keep the sticks line horizontal to my ulna. Nver thought I'd use ulna in a sentence hahaha... is that a specific technique or just the way you ended up playing?
this is an awsome video man !! and a killer song .. i love chevelle always have .. If u do requests id love to see u play RUSE !! on the same cd as this song !! .. that would be appreciated .. been wanting to see that on drums !! thanks for the video awsome .. keep up the good beats !! rock out buddy
Thats why its a cover. Did you not read what he wrote about playing with it in a Danny Carey kinda vibe? Im a huge tool fan so i think you nailed it pretty spot on. i can def hear the danny input through out the song. anywho good cover man! keep rocking your own groove. sounds good.
@HeisW140 Haha, I tried those stick tosses almost as a joke on one take and had to stop because I started laughing. But then I watched the video and it looked kinda cool, so I kept doing it :) That Novo China sounds SWEET! It's got a nice high pitch and exotic overtones that really compliments the hand-hammered Paragons.
@plentifulceaser Thanks man, much appreciated! No real tips, other than following your passion. Also, get Jojo Mayer's Modern Drummer DVD - it will teach you tons.
buddy... fucking sick man.. i just got into drumming and this song has been one of my top picks to learn... good job man.. fckn great. btw any tips for drumming?
@johnkew really? the gretch hardware it cheap? . i have a Catalina maple kit just like oggydrummer92il .. well i have trouble getting good sound to. but could it just be that i havnt tuned them right, :,( .. i am i pore child that can barely afford food . so do you have any ideas as what i can do besides change the toms out?... also what kind of cymbals do you have and whats the size?
Everytime I watch, it gets better and better .
Very cool that I made an impression :-) Chevelle does remind me of Tool in ways - certainly the same vibe. That's why I added a lot of stuff to the drums and made it more Danny Carey style.
We are missing you John. We need a fix. Please throw us a bone lol. Hope you are well.
hey sir yeah hope you’re ok 🙏
Thanks everybody for your comments - all of your encouragement and kind words really mean a lot to me, and I really appreciate all of you taking time to watch and to comment.
Cheers,
John
Thanks man, I'm glad you (and your son) like this one. I've always wanted to take some creative liberties with one of Chevelle's songs, so this one was a lot of fun for me.
OMG you do Chevelle and Tool? Damn John, you had me at 46 & 2. lol Seriously, you're incredible. I subbed!!!
Even fucking def fucking tones
@AlainHubert Thanks much for stopping by and commenting Alain, and yes I'm very happy with these new mics. It's funny how my posture on the drums has worsened over the past few months - watching your perfect posture really made me realize I have to nip this in the bud.
man i wish i had my drum set back... it was the one thing that put me in my own world... watching this reminded me of how i used to bang on pots and pans. kick ass videos man keep it up
Drummers are the coolest, just because they can do stuff like this. You are awesome man, great stuff.
I logged in just to comment. Love what you've done with the song, gave it some much needed depth, especially with the repetition this song requires. Glad to see that you deviated and didn't just cover it exactly, like a robot. Keep it up man!
@Tlaloc666 Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, and I'm really glad you liked my spin on this one!
You have some killer fills in this.
I've noticed I've started to move around the kit similar to you, gotta say you've been one of my bigger influences in the last few months.

nice work!!! you took a wicked tune and rocked the hell out of it!! huge help for me as my band just started messin with this one.
Outstanding. I can say that you just performed the first drum cover that I like more than the original
your fills from about 2:10 onward are GODLIKE... and you keep a really good groove despite switching between all those cymbals. Nice!!
Thanks man, much appreciated. I'm using and Audix D6 in the kick.
@RighteOusChicKen Thanks for checking out my video, and thanks for your feedback!
Dude I wish I had just an ounce of musical talent!!!!! That was totally badass!!!! Great set up as well. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another sick cover dude! I love your kit man, lovely set up!
your drums sound awsome bro....fine tuned piece of equipment....your toms are awsome and I must not forget about the Paste by the Hi-Hat.......Just awsome....!!!!!
Sometimes drummers aren't admired enough. I'm pretty sure people won't make that terrible mistake with you. Awesome cover, dude! :D
So freaking clean. Great Job as always. The sound is amazing also.

Like the toms much better now. Very good drum mix with the backing tracks and great performance!
@johnkew I wouldn't dare try a stick toss - I drop them often enough as it is. Glad the Novo worked out in the kits "sound palette" for lack of a better term. Well done all round 10/10
excellent job and love the fills!
thats sick how do you guys keep the rythems going i guess i will leave it to the professionals keep on rocking bro
@DrummingUpGames Thanks man! Those fills were very much Keith Moon-inspired, with the cymbal crashes in the middle of tom fills, and fills that crosscut measures. I don't hear many drummers doing that any more, except for of course Neil Peart.
@hellerusa It's a Pearl 14 inch free floating maple snare.
I love this song! I made a whole Chevelle cd and jam out to them all the time, and you did them great justice with this cover. Amazing as allways. :]
I like the Paragons, Neil Peart style haha.
Wow I have been messing around with this song as well but WOW...GREAT job man!
EXCELLENT! Refreshing to see a drum cover moving off the original.
I like your "added flair". Makes it more of an orange then a apple.
i wasn't feeling it at first but i'm glad i listened to the whole thing. good stuff John!
@CudilifestyleBB Great choice - the end of that song still gives me chills when I hear Danny's total mastery on the drums.
Face to the Floor is a fairly new song...you seem to have caught on to the rhythm quickly. Takes talent and skill to take on a song like that and blend in your own unique beats. I approve :)
@clanofhyrule I've got a 19 inch Sabian Paragon on the right and a 20 inch paste Novo on the left.
Sub'd. By far one of the best drummers I've come across in a while. I can only hope to be as smooth as you one day. Awesome vid!!
Excellent job! Love this song - great drumming.
best drum cover I have seen. Great job!
I hadn't heard any Chevelle before this, they sound a lot like Tool, which is a good thing. Awesome cover!
thanks for the invite, great job :-) u definitely are Tool influenced, especially after 2nd minute, it kicks ass :)
@MrIPunchHard Right on man, you got it! It's that part at 4:30 of The Pot. Damn, I thought that would take longer for somebody to guess. This is fun, maybe I'll put together a montage of beats and make a contest out of it.
Good job - I like your improvisational fills.
@johnkew You're very welcome. If I may, I'd love to request to hear your interpretation of Clones. @johnkew cool. Any chance you'll do another Chevelle drum cover? The Meddler off their new album has got a pretty cool beat. so does "An evening with El Diablo". great work.
@johnkew Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40. It has an awesome 24X optical zoom!
Holy shit, I was looking throught eh top 30 rock songs (trying to scab ideas for more channel hits hahaha) and I found "Chevelle Face to the floor"... and had a quick listen... @johnkew yet again, insane cover. Was the beat inspired by the china section that starts around 4:36 in the Pot?

Thanks man, much appreciated!
@rodriguesbob100 Thanks, much appreciated!
