You can very easily remove the colour from the printed side of the can with steel wool, sand paper or even an ordinary emery board. It will leave fine scratches in the surface but it also gives you a much shinier surface (as opposed to the inside of the can) and it can look really cool.
Thanks for the link, I've never seen anything like this. I like the idea of freehand lines with perfectly spaced holes for stitching or just decoration. I will be trying some metal too. Thanks
Also, for colouring the metal with sharpies, to avoid getting streaks or lines, just quickly smudge it with your fingers as you go. It turns out nice and smooth. I have also dabbed a little rubbing alcohol over it but this tends to fade the colour. And to protect things outdoors and keep the colour from fading when exposed to sunlight, you need to put a good coating of something on it to seal it. I haven't done any pieces for outdoors yet, but I'm guessing Mod Podge Outdoor would be a good option, or perhaps Minwax, which I hear is very good.
Cat Quilter - Miniwax has a gel stain that they claim works on non-porous surfaces such as metal. I haven't tried but let me know if you give it a go! Also the piercing tool is a product by SewEasy, here's link to a starter kit on the Hobby Lobby website. shop.hobbylobby.com/products/sew-easy-starter-kit-764852/
Thanks so much! I have lots of stains, as I am a woodworker. I wanted to mention I found other perforating tools in the leather tool sections of various sites and stores. "Leather Overstitch Wheel Awl", these come in different spacing and diameters of holes. Also saw a plunge tool meat tenderizer that cut a filled circle of holes. Looks like fun.
Curious if wood stains would work. I'm sure drying time would be long. What is the rolling tool called, the one at the end of the video that perforates in a line? Thanks for sharing your experience!
what do you make with the finished product??? It looks interesting , but that was like reading a novel, only to find that someone ripped out the last two pages,,lol
Hi, I really like what you are doing here? Do you have any pictures of the final results? I would love to see what you made and also, how you sewed into the aluminum.. I am curious about this project since I wasn't clear about exactly what you are planning to do. Thank you so much!!
Hi, Juliana. There was an associated video for this one. Take a look at this video ua-cam.com/video/aRjY7wB-_vw/v-deo.html. So I would sew into the aluminum with a machine. But using that tool in the video to make holes would make it easier to use a needle and thread to do some decorative stitches. I'll come up with something after the holidays to share on UA-cam so stayed tuned.
***** Thanks so much!! I can't wait to see the other video. I am working on an upcycle project that is begging to be done. I'm trying to come up with several ideas for the materials that are recycle and actually a really wasted product on the market. Maybe you might have some ideas. Can we connect on FB? I would love to show you what I got and what my plans are so far. I'm just preparing the materials to be broken down to used to make something. And I will look for that rolling needle machine. Many thanks and love what you are doing!! Juliana
Juliana Beasley Just checked out the link for that embossing tool.. it's a lot cheaper on Amazon for those of you who want it. It's actually a bit too pricey for me.. but I might invest in it. Here is the link and of course, if you have Prime.. it will probably be cheaper. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sew+easy+We+R+Memory
I don't know what happened to my comment that I posted a few moments ago so here I am trying again. LOL! What is the name of that tool please? Great tutorial! Thank you!

Ahhh! Just a tip, you can get your soda can metal much flatter without as many deformations just by ironing it flat with a clothes iron.
I hear your cat :) nice video ^^
I think your cat wants in/feeding?!?! good video & helpful tips.

Cat Quilter That sounds interesting. I have to get back to playing with soda cans...it's been a little while.

I was wondering if it has to be those kind of paints, and also if those paints/stains will last outside? Great video thanks for sharing!
