Can we take a moment to appreciate as good stans do the amount of quality effort that Jesse puts into his videos? The way that all of his videos are structured and shot is so refreshingly beautiful and unique! Many people are on the internet for likes, but Jesse’s here to make others happy!
I know that sounds wierd, but I really like your ring and how you've constantly been wearing it! I find it beautiful when people have a signature item 💓
It's okay to DNF! I ask myself, "Would I rather read something else on my shelf or at the library/bookstore, or would I like to continue reading the book I'm on?" If it takes me a long time to decide, or if I definitely know I would rather read something else, I will set the book aside. There's still plenty to interest me, so books that are marginal are not usually going to be worth the time.
Murakami writes magical realism (I don't know if this is the correct translation tho), so that means that the story is set in a world like you and I live in, BUT weird things happen and they have no explanation like in fantasy worlds. Kafka on the Shore is one of my favorite books from him but i wouldn't recommend it for someone who is not familiar with his writing style. Like I said before in a comment: you maybe more into Sputnik, my sweetheart or South of the border, west of the sun
Those recent vids of yours are A+ Jesse! I totally get why you want to get more creative, i mean when you're running a book channel it has SO MUCH stuff you can do with it so i wouldn't wanna be stuck with the same stuff either. And, well, these vlogs are aesthetic, and beautiful, and perfection, so keep up the good work!
also, i’m finally starting victoria schwab! i’m so excited. i’m only thirty pages in but the concept is so unique and i’m kind of in love fjdjksks (i’m reading a darker shade of magic by the way)
I really enjoyed the editing for this video, the overlays were cute. I don't really like DNF'ing things, I tend to just put the book down and tell myself that maybe I'll get back to it someday. I'd like to suggest the anime for Descending Stories. Since it's all about rakugo I think that it really helps to actually see and hear them tell the stories. The voices are such a big part of the storytelling and I feel they really bring it to life.
I loved After Dark and Norwegian Wood by Murakami. In fact, After Dark was my "favorite" book for a long time. I read them AGES ago though... I'd be interested to see if I would feel the same way now.... You know how sometimes books just work with a specific time in your life.
Don’t expect any kind of explanation with a Murakami book ever haha. But the lack of sense is why they’re so good though! I definitely recommend to read Norwegian Wood and Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World plus a couple of others by Murakami and then 1Q84 (a masterpiece). I say read a some others first because then you’ll be able to fully enjoy 1Q84. Also I haven’t read that manga but the anime is good!
This is such a relaxed and (may I say it?) kind of beautiful video. Both very visually pleasing while also having fab content! I wholeheartedly support your decision to do videos in this style as it was great to watch and interesting with the varied content included in 12 mins alone. Hope 2019 is a great year for you (personally, with booktube, and with your writing!) 😊
There's been so much substance in your videos lately, and I've been really enjoying them. Continuing my jessethereader binge. About "Kafka on the Shore" - have you read anything by the actual Franz Kafka? It would probably give you context with which you can interpret Murakami's book.
RECOMMENDATIONS: (Murakami is one of my all-time favorites!! I'm sos excited you read Kafka!) 1. After Dark - also very weird, however, the point of the story is to have that weird out-of-body feeling while trying to understand a series of things happening from multiple perspectives. 2. Norwegian Wood- unlike most of his work, this was his little dip into the pool of realistic fiction. To be honest, it's really heartbreaking and wild, but easier to follow along if you prefer something less strange. There's also a movie adaptation. 3. After the Quake- lots of interesting short stories, one of then was very recently made into an adapted film and both The story and the movie are CRAZY GOOD!!!
Jessie, I have three manga recommendations for you. The first is called “Vinland Saga”, it’s set in a historical Viking age and it is absolutely amazing, the art also gets better with each issue and the story has interesting, complex characters. The second is called “Goodnight Punpun”. I’ll be honest, this one is depressing, but it’s a unique journey of discovery which makes the reader reflect on themselves by the end. The final is is called “The Promised Neverland”. This is one of the most interesting manga that appeared on Jump in recent years, it’s also nicknamed the next death note as it focuses on intelligence. I won’t tell you anything about this one besides the fact that it is about an orphanage. if you read it you will be sucked right in with no regrets. Just so you know, Vinland Saga and the Promised Neverland are both getting anime adaptations. Their both *that* good.
ooo Kafka on the Shore is one of my faves! 100% a very bizarre read (I spent a solid amount of the book very confused) but I love the way the story builds. Loving the editing style lately as well!
I've found your channel recently and I'm happy that I did. The problem I find with booktubers is that they mostly have specified videos ( TBRs, tags, hauls, etc.) towards the genre like like; which makes sense it being their channel, but as someone that is not a fan of YA it leaves me in a conundrum because as much as l like the youtuber, im not for the content. With these vlogs, i can still get possible book recommendations, but if not i can be here for the vlog that is most of the video. You seem like a great guy, and I'm happy to support.
I think "Kafka on the Shore" is such a heavy story to start of your Murakami. I read it last year and it was an amazing but very weird book. I needed a couple of days to figure out what I felt after the reading and I'm rereading it this year. I would advice reading "After Dark", the trilogy 1Q84, "Sputnik Sweetheart" and the short stories "The Second Bakery Attack" and "Sleep". I find his writing so beautiful and easy to read and the stories are always so intriguing and marvelous. I hope you enjoy his books!
yeeesss,! I love your creative videos!! Although i could watch unboxings over and over, any other 'basic' booktube content (apart from hauls which i sometimes watch) i just dont watch! not to shade anyone, but i find it so laborious to watch someone give me a vague description of a book, and then at the end of the month get the exact same video with a more in depth anaylysis. Of course they are sometimes useful but i muuuuch prefer your varied content and your killer editing!
i'm reading kafka on the shore as well and i totally feel the same way about it! murakami is great but it takes some adjusting for sure. i'd recommend reading his short story "the second bakery attack," it's super weird and and psychological and murakami-esque but a little easier to digest. i love your new style of videos and how you're changing it up! definitely glad i stayed subscribed :)
Your new videos are so aesthetic, like I literally can't deal??? The quality is so overwhelming (in a terribly good way). I'm glad you're having fun making content, and if you're going to deliver little joys like this, don't worry about hurriedly putting videos out. My favorite Murakami book (until now haha) is Colourless Tsukuru Tazaki and his Years of Pilgrimage :)
Your editing this year is lovely. I’ve always enjoyed it because I can’t edit anything but this new style is beautiful. It must take ages, so thanks for doing it! This video made me smile, and it was a very bad day let me tell you so thanks for that as well.
Ooo I'd really recommend Murakami's After Dark if you liked the weirdness of Kafka on the Shore! I've also read his Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage and really enjoyed it! It's more straightforward in terms of style, too :D Anyway, great video! I only started watching your vids recently but you're really engaging! :) Looking forward to more!
Hey Jesse, have you ever read a "Manga classic"? Literally manga versions of classics of literature, I know it has nothing to do with anything but they're really cool (they also make you want to read the actual books), -on my case I've only read three, and they were amazing-
I totally get the whole writing by hand thing! If I am stuck creative wise, I will usually get out of it by writing by hand. I guess there is just something about holding a pen in hand that helps my brain get going with ideas :3
I’ve been watching booktube channels for so long and recently discovered your channel, and I have to say I am so glad I did! Your editing is always impressive and you bring a new element to the classic booktube channel :) love the vlogs
Jesse, I'm loving your new editing style. It's so cool!!! And the photography of it, with the blacks and the reds and the coffee tones. SO FREAKING AMAZING!! I'm editing my first ever youtube video and I hope that someday I'll learn to edit something like this. LOVE IT.
I love this. I basically love anything you post. Don’t worry about that. Keep doing whatever you want. I’m happy you are a UA-camr who does what you want
The editing in this is AH-mazing. Your skills are mad! I’m really excited about you changing up your content, it sounds very interesting and it also makes so much sense - plus you’re off to an amazing start. I love Murakami (we share a birthday too😅)! His novels are definitely strange. If you want to read more, I can recommend Norwegian Wood, it’s also quite strange, but it’s my favorite so far 😊
Your new videos are so aesthetically pleasing and inspiring yass. I know what you mean about creating the content you are used to or that everyone likes, last year I joined the booktube community with a few videos and found myself a bit lost, but this year will be a lot better. Thanks for inspiring the community!
I support the fact that you want to support the library. Also, that’s so cool that you listen to Conan Gray! I love his music too and it’s cool to see UA-camrs supporting other UA-camrs
Nice, and I'm wearing my Studio Ghibli shirt today too. If you haven't seen the anime 'Summer Wars' yet I highly recommend it. Its not Miyazaki but it has that feel and I know you'll love it.
Wow. This new style of editing is straight up GORGEOUS. And i totally agree with your changes, you made me super excited! Good luck with your writing btw. I'd love to read something from you someday ;)
If you liked "Kafka" you should try "A Wild Sheep Chase" and "Dance, Dance, Dance" (in this order). I can also recommend his (probably) most famous book "Norwegian Wood". Have a great read! 💕
I don't know what I did to deserve this much content from you in this week but it's the only thing that is getting me through this week! Wouldn't mind if this continued for a few more days **hint hint** **nudge nudge** 😂😂
I usually don't write any comments on UA-cam but I really wanted to say how much I appreciate your new way of editing and just how happy your videos make me when watching them. I love your new 2019 style and hope you'll keep it up that way! :) Greetings from Germany :)
Wow, I’m really into your new content (I didn’t know it was possibly to love your channel more that I did but it’s happened). You have totally inspired me to do a self care night tomorrow!!
Your video is really a good way for me to start this year. Motivate me to step out of my comfort zone, embrace the changes, and believe more in myself. Keep up your awesome work! Oh, you can try Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Year of Pilgrimage for another Murakami's experience
I don't normally comment but I have to say this video was so amazing. Wonderful, beautiful editing that (unlike your manga oops) really kept me interested. I loved this so much! Hope you do more!
read After Dark! :) It's shorter and less confusing and really good in general. Then maybe read Chronicles of a Wind Up Bird, which is longer but also good. Murakami also has good short stories in The Elephant Vanishes
First Murikami book I ever read was After Dark. I liked it a lot, the plot was fairly straight forward and I think if I were to try and give a synopsis I would say that it’s a story about the people who live there life After Dark in Japan’s most interesting and frightening cities. Loved the video
“That’s what the internet said” and “I listen to the internet “ is basically how I justify my terrible life choices
dang dude, you've really upped your editing game!! your latest videos have been EXTRA AWESOME!!!! #IMPRESSED
Agreed
o thought the same thing lol
Jesse your editing is so freaking amazing!! This man right here slaying the UA-cam, writing, and reading game!!
thanks so much!
The thumbnail😂
Yeah lol
1:12 - 1:16 , every girl every time of the month
Hahaha! Yes! How did I not think this myself? 😂
I laughed so hardddddd at this HAHA
Ohh my godd😂😂😂
Brilliant 😂
All of this
"This book weirdly smells spicy."
We all love a good spicy book.
That we do
Of course 🙄✋✨
Jesse, when you publish your book you've already got a fan from me!
OOH WAFFLES
ah thanks!
Divergent Pirate-Queen yes yes yes same here
Sign me up too, mate!😁
Can we take a moment to appreciate as good stans do the amount of quality effort that Jesse puts into his videos? The way that all of his videos are structured and shot is so refreshingly beautiful and unique! Many people are on the internet for likes, but Jesse’s here to make others happy!
Danielle Wagner ikr it’s so magical! 💕
I know that sounds wierd, but I really like your ring and how you've constantly been wearing it! I find it beautiful when people have a signature item 💓
thanks!
Your evil laugh when taking the book out of the plastic bag is me when I walk inside any bookstore
hahaha
I'm with you. I even look around to make sure no one is watching sniffing the book then let out my evil laugh 😂😂😂
I gasp really loudly and start arguing with myself on what to get
Same
OHMYGOSH same.
omg NEVER cancel these vlogs ... they're perfection!
The aesthetics though!! ❤️🖤
Your past videos have been a HUGE improvement editing wise!!! I loved it before but now i absolutely love it so much, keep it up :) AHHH so good!!
thank you!
Honestly one of the best edited videos yet. Absolutely phenomenal!
It's okay to DNF! I ask myself, "Would I rather read something else on my shelf or at the library/bookstore, or would I like to continue reading the book I'm on?" very true!! thanks for the reminder.

So glad you're supporting libraries! They are amazing. Your editing has been on point lately. Loving it.

You've been posting sooo much lately and I'm loving it!
trying my best to have consistency with uploading! i'm glad you're enjoying it. :)
Of course! Your videos are amazing. Keep up the good work :-)
I'm from 2020.
I see the book "Quarantine" in the background at 0:14,
And sadly, I am brought back to reality.
I really enjoyed the editing for this video, the overlays were cute. I don't really like DNF'ing things, I tend to just put the book down and tell myself that maybe I'll get back to it someday.

you reacting to Queen of Air and Darkness was EVERYTHING 😂😂😂😂
I loved After Dark and Norwegian Wood by Murakami. In fact, After Dark was my "favorite" book for a long time. I read them AGES ago though... I'd be interested to see if I would feel the same way now.... You know how sometimes books just work with a specific time in your life.
I feel like this year he’s putting visuals/aesthetics into a larger perspective and I love it! Also, make more of these vlogs, they are great

Love how you're low-key matching with Kafka on the shore
RECOMMENDATIONS:
(Murakami is one of my all-time favorites!! I'm sos excited you read Kafka!)

That paperback book holder you put in your backpack is so smart.. Going to Amazon to buy one right now!

The editing in this is AH-mazing. Your skills are mad! I’m really excited about you changing up your content, it sounds very interesting and it also makes so much sense - plus you’re off to an amazing start.
I love Murakami (we share a birthday too😅)! His novels are definitely strange. If you want to read more, I can recommend Norwegian Wood, it’s also quite strange, but it’s my favorite so far 😊

absolutely loving the style and the aesthetic of this vlog. can’t wait to see more!
Nice, and I'm wearing my Studio Ghibli shirt today too. If you haven't seen the anime 'Summer Wars' yet I highly recommend it. Its not Miyazaki but it has that feel and I know you'll love it.
I'm really liking your vlogs, some of my favorite times on booktube are after a read-a-thon so I can watch everyone's vlogs so yeah keep these comin!
Wow. This new style of editing is straight up GORGEOUS. And i totally agree with your changes, you made me super excited! Good luck with your writing btw. I'd love to read something from you someday ;)
I typically don’t like vlog type videos but this was so nice and chill really loving this new style jesse💖
I’m always looking forward to your uploads. It was a stressful school day so coming home to an upload was perfect.
i love so much where you are going with your channel, i hope it will make you happy because it will most certainly make us ♥
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and his years of Pilgrimage and Dance dance dance are amazinggg. I would love to hear ur opinion on those two :3
Jesse, your videos have been getting so much more amazing then they already were!!!
love the new direction your channel is going, and it’s awesome that you’re making the content you want!
If you liked "Kafka" you should try "A Wild Sheep Chase" and "Dance, Dance, Dance" (in this order). I can also recommend his (probably) most famous book "Norwegian Wood". Have a great read! 💕
I love your reading vlogs, and I hope you’ll continue to create them! You did an excellent job with this one especially. The editing was exceptional!
I don't know what I did to deserve this much content from you in this week but it's the only thing that is getting me through this week! Wouldn't mind if this continued for a few more days **hint hint** **nudge nudge** 😂😂
This new style of videos is amazing!! U rock bro. Like so much ur channel 🇧🇷
Your vids are always interesting because you are so naturally articulate. Kafka is my favorite Murakami, btw~

I really love the music you use in the background of your videos
I don't normally comment but I have to say this video was so amazing. Wonderful, beautiful editing that (unlike your manga oops) really kept me interested. I loved this so much! Hope you do more!
Seriously impressed with this editing!! Gorgeous!
OMFG YOUR EDITING THIS YEAR IS FREAKING AWESOME! 😱🙌🏻
SLAYYYY KING 🔥
read After Dark! :) It's shorter and less confusing and really good in general. Then maybe read Chronicles of a Wind Up Bird, which is longer but also good. Murakami also has good short stories in The Elephant Vanishes
I really like your reading vlogs. They’re my favorite

The snappy clickly thing at the beginning blew my mind! Make the content you want! Its your channel!
