In my opinion, I don’t really gravitate towards a story because it’s a series or duology. Like UGLIES, I HATE that series- like with a passion. But Red Queen? I loved that series, and can’t wait for Broken Throne. So, as long as the writing style is nice ( i’m picky about that) and the characters are interesting and the plot is interesting, then i’m down for whatever it is, whether it be a duology or series😁

For me, it really does depend on the book and the situation. I'm more likely to pick up a standalone because then I don't have to worry about tracking down the next book, but sometimes I just want more. In the end, as long as the book was good I'm not complaining.

Unearthed was incredible! It's like an Indiana Jones movie but on an alien planet. And yes, you definitely need Undying the second you end Unearthed because it ends with massive cliffhangers and twists. And one nice thing the authors do at the beginning of Undying is give a summary of what happened in Unearthed (which more authors should do).

Ok, I just got to the start of the discussion and I’d like to preface by saying I didn’t even know duologies were a thing before this video! I have read my fair share of trilogies, and I have definitely read sooooooo many series of four or more books, so it was interesting to hear about duologies. I do prefer trilogies though (the logical “beginning, middle, end” storywriting part of my brain really likes trilogies for this) but I like the challenge of condensing a story into only two books. Thank you for enlightening me!

I agree! I am a fan of the duologies! I like to re-read books and I find that I am more likely to re-read duo rather than a series or trilogy. They also seem to keep a better pace rather than stretch the story out. Passenger and Wayfarer are a perfect example of how a duology should play out - even though I would LOVE to read more about Etta and Nicholas!

I understand the commitment argument. I started reading the mortal instruments in January and now I've finished that series, the infernal devices and the Magnus bane chronicles and there are still five books left. I really like the entire world of the Shadowhunters and all the books, but it just takes so much time and commitment to read all of them. Personally I have never read a duology but it sounds really nice to be done reading a series in one or maybe two weeks.

I agree with you in a lot of points. I'm not a big fan of trilogies because of those syndroms (love the names and underlined shade on Allegiant lol). I love series but definitely agree on the commitment part, though. I wasn't a problem for me when I was younger but now I barely have time or will to read even a standalone and I haven't picked up a new series since... Dang I don't even remember. But duologies are my life-savers. I'm currently reading Our Dark Duet and I mean it's Victoria Schwab of course it's good but the characters?? Siblings dynamic?? Complete trash for that

I haven't read that many duologies, but the ones I have read I have mixed emotions about. If the entire story is done well in both books and everything ends up nicely, then they're really enjoyable. But sometimes a story is either too big or too short for two books and I end up getting frustrated. But I agree with everything you said, thanks for another fun video Jesse!

It's weird that you'd do a video about duologies with The Call, by Peadar O'Guilin, right behind you, and not even mention it XD
I love duologies too, sometimes it really brings something new. I wasn't sold on Anna Dressed in Blood's sequel but The Invasion (sequel to the Call)? Yep, loved it!
I've also read and loved This Savage Song and Six of Crows, so I will be reading Out Dark Duet and Crooked Kingdom very soon :)
The third book Tragedy that disappointed me the most, though, was The Strain. The first one was good, second one wasn't bad either but the third took a completely different route and left me very unimpressed. And I don't read series anymore. More than three, maybe four? I'm out. Too much time, too much money and the last ones I read, the quality kept plumetting, it was becoming a chore but I just couldn't give up without knowing how it ended. Not committing myself like that again.

I am completely agreeing about the series section... I can binge a series in around 4 days BUT I still forget everything when I reach the last book. That being said, Trilogies have a special place in my heart (aka Angelfall 😍) I feel as though they take a day or two to read and they give you enough so when you set the books down your not feeling as though you’re missing out on something big that was meant to occur. That’s just my personal preference. (wow look at little 12 year old me using my discussion language) I do love duoligies though :))

I personally feel trilogies are my favourite, because they serve the same beginning-middle-end arc each individual book has and to me that’s perfect! But I really do love a good duology, they’re usually more concise also cheaper! Also, they’re actually a good thing for authors. Standalone don’t typically hold as much attention as a series so a duology is perfect

Personally, I prefer trilogies because you get more books to read and you form that strong bond with the characters and they become like a family to you though don’t get me started on the emotional reck that follows once you’ve finished a trilogy. And I know you always or most of the time form a bond with the characters and you feel close to them but in trilogies you get to spend more time with them which only makes saying goodbye harder. As for the the third book being a bummer... Well, it could also happen with duologues so it really depends on the author and I tend to only complete trilogies so I don’t have to do the waiting and the same goes for series but sometime they just drag if you get what I mean

I respect that you say what you mean, but, if you read a trilogie and all the books are small while the duologie that you read is like a two bricks... well the word count is most likely to tip in the trilogie's favor, however, it would be close. If the second book wasn't stellar like the first or even the third book, you wasted time on the second book. My point is you wouldn't waste as much time with a duologie or even a stand-alone. I hope you know I'm just teasing a little bit 😉 also depending on how the author presents his/ her characters, I can be more emotionally attached to them, then to characters that I have known longer. I guess it just depends on how skilled the author is. I'm not going to argue the point of the last book being a bummer, becaus that I agree with. Ones again, my goal was not to offend you in any sort of way, just to have some fun. Of course these are all my personal opinions. 😁 if you did read this I hope you had as much fun reading this as I did writing it!
      A complete stranger,
      JJ

I like them all! duologies, trilogies, series, you name it, I’m gonna fall in love with it (if they’re good) no matter what! I don’t have a preference as to which I like the best because books are what I live for! I have the opportunity to eat ‘em all up and enjoy, especially if they’re from an all time favorite author, and amazingly amazing!!! #blessed

You are right I really want to read a book in a series and remember everything that happens in previous books but this can be impossible in series unless reread them.

I wrote a duology once and I didn’t know two book series was a thing so it let me down. But knowing it’s actually a thing, I can be prouder of my work

i mostly love long book series or trilogies. only problem with long series is that they take up so much room on my shelves.... one series i own is at least 70 books long - and still ongoing - and takes up half of my shelf!

You forgot to count the last Duology ;)
Great video. Since I'm a mood reader I do prefer One shots or Duologies at the most. Tho if they're both 800 page books I'll still have a problem haha xD

I still haven’t read War Storm yet. I preordered that book, hyped up and ready to reread the first three books and then got distracted by other books...

So I just found this (somehow missed it), and I just want to tell you I'm currently writing a duology, and the only thing that keeps me motivated and writing, is knowing that you or other booktubers might read it if it gets to a more "popular" point.

I have a few book recommendations that I think are great and are some of my favorites. A good series is the poison study series by Maria V Snyder, it was a trilogy for a very long time, so you could just read the first three if you want to. A series that always comes out with a book once a year consistently is the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, it’s paranormal, but really good. I definitely recommend both. But you don’t have to read them if you don’t want to.

Literally going through book amnesia! I’ve been listening to book 1-4 of the Throne of Glass series because I’m terrified I forgot something important before I read Empire of Storms; thank god for audio books😅

Have you ever read Tracked or Marked by Jenny Martin? It's a really good duology that involves race car driving in a sci-fi world (?). I read it about three years ago, so I'm not sure if it's a sci-fi world or just futuristic.
Also, I've just recently been watching your videos, and I've really enjoyed them. Thank you for being your quirky self. 😁❤

Not a duology but I recommend the Vega Jane series! The Finisher is book one. The Keeper is book two. I'm almost done reading the third book which is The Width of the World. I thought it was a trilogy but the fourth book called The Stars Below comes out this year and I'm so excited for it!!

Unearthed does sound intresting and I met to get around to it in 2018. I hope to read this duelogy this year! I can love series if I love the characters and plot enough to continue. But otherwise duelogy are nice.
