Sounds like special treasured memories 😊, I used to live opposite Blackburn market in the Fleece hotel pub on Penny Street opposite Reideys music shop, which my Mum and Dad were Landlady and Landlord for a couple of years. I would cut through the market every day on my way to school at Blakey moor. 👍
@envsf03 I’ve spent many good nights out in Accy, it used to be amazing on a bank holiday Sunday it was always heaving especially around Church street, I think the Commercial was called the Regency when we used to frequent it. 😊
@@envsf03 Bought my first album from Reidy's,Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road fro £3.99 in 1973.Was the first of 100s .My mother scolded me for spending so much money on 1 record but calmed down a bit when I told her it was 2 records.
My Dad's Mum was born in Blackburn and her Dad was the last of 3 Brother's who moved to the States. My Dad visited in 1985 and I visited in 2015. The first two generations worked in textile mills but by the 3rd generation it was everything from Military, Banker's, and small business owner's. I surmise the 3 Brother's who came would be satisfied with the living standards of their offspring. From what I've been told hard work was all they knew and if it hadn't been for educational opportunities given to Veterans of WW2 we'd all probably be doing some type of factory work.
Thank you for uploading. Like a lot of towns and cities the best years are behind. It’s not just the industry that goes, it’s the community as well. Pubs and Social Clubs disappearing also doesn’t help. People talk about progress etc, but in many places progress isn’t apparent! I cannot see how it’s going to be rescued sadly.
I’m a Blackburn lad and I have to say that growing up in the sixties and seventies it was a cracking place to live. Once the eighties arrived it was one of the north west places to have a night out. Pubs everywhere. But not now. It’s died a death. There used to be pubs on every street corner but as demographics change and smoking bans come into place and lord knows what else. I just can’t see it ever coming back. Oh it looks nice and tiddly in the town centre but that’s about it.
I don't know you say that it's declining when there is so much dynamism and so much happening. They may no night clubs but have a walk down one day and you will see how vibrant the whole place is I remember the days of Blackburn when everyone was a curtain twicher !! It's changed so much for the better.. Asians that migrates in the 60s and 70s have done so much to bring the town up
I have mixed feelings, I worked on the old Matthew Brown Brewery site, which employed hundreds, it shut down as did Thwaites. Lots of pubs have disappeared as has the nightlife. The market is a shadow of its former glory. There are more alcoholics and drug users frequenting the town centre. But I am pleased to hear they are restoring the palm house at corporation park. Yes there are some great additions from the Asian community. I like to do some of my shopping at the Asian grocery stores and they have some great food options in the town.
My grandpa was born in Blackburn in 1919, he moved to Canada when he was young. His dad was an officer in the Royal Navy and was sent to Canada to train Royal Canadian Navy officers so he brought his family here. I know some of my ancestors from there worked in the textile industry there from the records I've seen. Thanks for sharing this video, I hope to visit there some day to see my grandpa's place of birth.
Really enjoyed that video pal, very informative. Loads of cracking pubs around Blackburn in the 80’s and then end up at peppermint place, a good few drinks, and if you hadn’t already got lucky the ten to two dash 🕺😂 Road to nab end is a cracking read as well. Which pub did you live over in Clayton btw?
Hi we lived in the Oddfellows on Whalley rd, like a lot of pubs it’s gone now, converted into houses. Yeah I loved Peppermint place and Suttys coconut grove had some epic nights out in Blackburn.
@@Robbo8ball ah yes sadly no longer a pub as you say, the Lamb was further down as well. Coconut grove was brilliant as well. My wife told a story about going to sutty’s back in the day with her friend. She went to the toilet, pushed the door of one of the cubicles open and a woman was sat there eating pie & peas.
So amI .Born in Witton,in a terraced house.Lived in the Blackburn area all my life.Seen a lot of changes ,some good some not so good. Progress can't be held back but it comes with resposibility.Sadly a lot of buildings have disappeared ,some needed to be demolished but lots of others should have been saved and repurposed for other uses. One memory is walking from Witton to the town centre and having the putrid stench of the glue factory off King St. hitting my nose until getting to Hornby House, but not as bad as the drains around Fore St. in Lower Darwen which was a pungent stink too. The Blakewater used to change colour as it passed through Witton from all the factories that used to dump their waste into it upstream in the town. One day it was bright orange ,the next it would be a dark purple.
Blackburn is now a dump full of scroungers. When I first lived here, it was a nice well serviced town with good shops and a great market. Now it is just like any other place, closing shops and fast food outlets. I lived for 2 years in Witton House in Witton park when I was about 9, watch the Coronation there. The rot started when they pulled it down after we moved to St. Marks road in a council house designed by my dad who worked in the architects dept. Good days then. What happened.
awesome video, my second channel is a walk through video and love to film this town too, any idea of car parks near the train station? of course dont mind paying as long as its in town somewhere and not full, i guess it depends on the time i come right
Hello, Fleming Square car park is pay and display that is probably the most central, also the mall has a multi storey car park which you take a token on entry, then pay at a machine before leaving, both are reasonably priced. Good luck 👍
@@Robbo8ball Thaats so helpful thank you, just for the record my second channel is called "West Yorkshire Traveller" thank you once again, its interesting that you got married in that church, i definatly need to check these places out, thank you once again
I moved here when my parents took over a pub called the Fleece when I was about 11 years old, have stayed around the area ever since. The town has seen better days a lot of the retail is struggling, but I still like the area.
We rented a house in Darwen in 2007.. It was the wettest Summer since the ice age, and me being from Wharfedale (on the East side), it was depressing. After 10 months, I said to her indoors (who is a yank), "do you want to stay here this winter, or go live in Florida" ... She thought about it for around 1 nanosecond, and we went to Florida.. Then in Spring, moved 3,200 miles to extreme right wing Wenatchee in Washington State. Then, after 4 years, we put the cats in the back and drove to here in Wisconsin. Next week we are visiting Yorkshire for the fish and chips. I got some from a Chinese place in Darwen and they were done in old Chinese burned fat... Absolutely honkable and I threw them out of the car window. So extradite me .... laugh out loud..
Nice, I can’t say I blame you! We live in Blackburn but like to travel a lot, and have visited the US many times, never been to Wisconsin though! Hope you get some decent fish and chips this time (Haddock is my favourite)!
@@Robbo8ball Yes haddock is the way to go... leave the Cod to Southerners... We used to walk up to Darwen Tower and then to the pub about a mile further across the fields.. "Royal Arms".... Benches outside. I was trying to teach her East Lancashire dialect and she heard a mother say to her kid 'Will you not squeal"..she still thinks that is funny.. My first wife's family were from Barlick, so I am bilingual. Do you not think so ?
@SunofYork Been up Darwen tower many times, you think you got it done then realise there’s another few flights of stairs to go up! Not sure about the pub, I used to do most of my drinking in Accrington having lived in a pub over in Clayton le moors as a teenager. My wife is originally from the Philippines and has picked up a bit of an East lancs accent having been here nearly 15 years, her sisters tease her about her accent!
