Hi, it's me. I'm in a reading slump and have been reading my favorite Shojo Manga (Ao Haru Ride and Dengeki Daisy).
Any recommendations for mangas or books I should check out?

Thanks for getting me. Hahaha. Right?? I think I wanted more connection, but looking back I don't exactly know what could have been done differently which makes me feel bad for not liking it. Like maybe Addie and Henry overcoming a couple villains and going on a dangerous mission or somthing?

*OKAY, SPOILERS* Addie and Henry had a sort-of childish, teenage relationship.
It's like when you're in high school and you start dating someone solely because they like you and you like them. You maybe have a few things in common, but that's it. It seemed to me to be purely out of convenience. I feel like they could've never worked out anyways. And at the end, even if Addie finally frees herself from Luc, even if she does find Henry again, they still wouldn't work out.
Because by that point, Henry would have grown. Addie helped him get out of his shell and explore more. She helped him become more confident and appreciate his life! So he would be a different person! Whereas Addie would still be the exact same girl, like "omg let's just dance in the rain and only try new foods and restaurants and things." That's not character growth, that just annoying LOL.
I definitely agree with you, I was just so tired of her influencer-type personality. She thought that "living" was doing a bunch of things and always moving and experiencing. But life's true experiences, like you said, come from our friends, family, the relationships we build. We get hurt, we hurt others, and we grow. But not Addie SMFH. Just UGH!!! :D

Honestly I was similarly disappointed with this book! I also thought the storytelling and prose was beautiful but the ending just left me wanting sooo much more. The relationship between her and Luc is so problematic. And she’s with him for decades?! And we only get a small glimpse into it?! And it’s marketed as a love story, and it appears that Addie and Henry fall in love, but when he says he loves her she’s not sure she does?! None of it clicked with me after like page 300. I thought it could have been soo much stronger if the ending was different. I was disappointed.

    • @asmalljoy

I think there just wasn't enough in the book to prove to us as readers about Addie's and Henry's love. There was no trial of trust or friendship. There was no common bond outside of "let's be lonely and emotional together."

You said that Henry was loved and I agree he was accepted for himself by his friends. I don't think he ever got the love he needed from his parents, which is the basis for all self esteem. I don't usually read this type of book, so I don't have much comparison. I really like the way Addie appreciated so many different aspects of life that we usually take for granted. I am enjoying your review a lot. thanks. I also liked the way Luc is described, the way he appears and disappears. I heard there is going to be a film.

I just finished this and agree that Henry and Addie was a relationship built on being the only one available and not really one built from a really connection. It definitely fell flat in that part. I agree sooooo much with how she just never grew up?! Plus it was very (even as a white person reading) white and Eurocentric that it bothered me. I love that their was lgbtqia+ representation but it also wasn’t truly explored through time. Lots of things fell flat and just could have been better explored. Like you said, not a bad book, just also not the best either.

  • @mmmargh

We all read for a variety of reasons. For me, language and structure are strong reasons. And the structure and language I found irritating. Schwab would start unnecessary paragraphs often to add emphasis. But she did it at least every other page that it became trite. Not everything is as important as Schwab wanted it to be. She was telling me how to read the book, and that pissed me off. Like I’m not smart enough to gather what is important and what isn’t. Also, at times with all her new paragraphs, it looked like she was trying to write prose poetry rather than a standard novel. What are you doing girl? Pick a structure and stick to it.
I agree with Addie and Henry not aging. In the book she is 23 and Henry is 28(?). As a 32 year old man, I can tell you they both read as teenagers, especially Addie. She read like the quirky girl who, in the words of Myona, is not like other girls. And Henry read like the emo boy in high school who never grew out of his emo phase.
I feel like this book was initially written as a YA, and then the characters were made older to market it to an adult audience. Everything about the book- the language, the “I’m so quirky” attitude by Addie, the desperate attempts Schwab made to be profound- read like a bad YA.
Also, Schwab’s obsession with the word “palimpsest” 🙄 Girl, we get it. You know the meaning of the word.

I loved the book, but Addie is an absolutely HORRIBLE main character. She literally damns herself to immortality and takes responsibility FOR NOTHING. She lives for 300 years and does nothing but serial date, try to "leave a mark" and whine about how "unfair" life is to her. Like girl, there was slavery and wars and mass homelessness and she did nothing for anyone but herself. IT was always me, me, me, woe is me with her. Only time she mused about anything was when it affected her directly. So for 300 years, she remained completely self-absorbed. She didn't mature at all. No character development. Even her relationship with Henry was incredibly self-motivated. "I don't love him. I only like him cause he remembers me." Also, she gave off really strong "I'm not like other girl vibes". I dont get how everyone sees her 7 freckles as stars and wants to paint her or take photos of her or put her in a song. She was "special" for the simple fact that the author wanted her to be percieved as special, not that she actually had any interesting characteristics or traits that made her special. How do you live 300 years and have nothing interesting or profound to show for it??? SMH! A waste of a curse. Not to mention, the girl who lives 300 years and wants to explore the world only goes to Eeurope and the US and appearently only meets 1 person of color. Hilarious.

Hipstery Peter Pan is *chef's kiss*. I totally get what you mean about being really sensitive and affected by the tone of a book. I read the Farseer trilogy while studying for a huge board exam a few years ago and the MC's cynicism destroyed my mood. But the completist in me couldn't stop reading them. I agree with the Henry/Addie relationship - they were together bc they fulfilled the others' needs (she needed to be remembered, and he needed to be seen as he was).

your review really got me. i felt this whole book was really flat. there isn’t a good construction of character, it’s like the only personality trait addie has is to be unhappy with her life. it was what we saw early on, and it’s what we see after the curse. also, i don’t like the way ve schwab presents some historical things. like apparently addie was there on beethoven’s deathbed, french revolution, ww2… and it’s just thrown there without any contextualization.
and the ending????? it’s so messed up. not only about the fact that addie ends with luc, but how come we had NO CLUE they had a relationship before? it doesn’t have any development and what’s supposed to be sad or heartbreaking just made me mad for the way it was done (honestly i felt like the author just wanted a plot twist no matter what)
idk, by the 60% mark i really had to force me through it. i really really didnt like this book

    • @asmalljoy
      @asmalljoy  3 роки тому +1

That's so true. Her romantic relationship with Luc didn't really have any signposting throughout the book so that we (as a reader) could feel like it was a valid move for Addie as a character. And totally, her main trait appears to be her angst... but it is odd that having that angst is what keeps her going. Like she'd rather feel unhappy than nothing at all.

I personally think that making this book character driven was a mistake. I think if Schwab expanded on Addie’s life during those 300 years, and less on the boring modern love story with Henry, it would be a lot better. I get that this is a character driven book, but how can it be character driven without any character development on Addie’s part? Like there is NO WAY you can live that long and see 300 year of history to still be this stunted, angsty-without-a-reason teenager. I was really disappointed with this book. :(
