I've never tried a Fender custom shop guitar but I've tried a few other custom shops and they have always been amazing. I have the player plus strat which is around 1k€ and I honestly cannot come up with anything that would make it better, maybe the pickups and stainless steel frets but that's all. I always enjoy watching you guys jam, great stuff!
I used to be in the same boat as you! The main thing that makes these guitars incredible to play is that they have a "worn in" feeling. Like imagine if every pair of shoes you got just "felt right" as soon as you got them. Not the kind of "rounded fret ends and perfectly flush cut frets" kinda good, but the "this guitar is brand new but plays like a 70 year old guitar. It feels just incredible to play. I had the pleasure of "owning" a fender custom shop guitar for a brief time period and while initially I wasn't a fan of the whole "relic" thing, it grew on me because it just feels *right* in the hands. The thought and care that goes into making these guitars feel and play like they do is the difference between an american performer strat and a fender custom shop guitar. Hope that helps paint a better picture!
I have a 62 Strat. It's a lefty and was a birthday present off my late father. I got it 40 years ago when i was 11. I have contemporary Guitars, some bought from Andertons, but for some reason the pre CBS Fender is the cream of the crop, especially if you get a good one. Chris Buck dropped on getting his for the price he paid. Huw did a great job restoring it. If you sold left handed master builts i would come in the store to see if it could temp me. Unfortunately i have to really root around for the likes of one of these. Great listening to you fellas noodle away, thanks Peat & Rabea. I have Triptych's in my Schecter Strat, exellent pup's.
That Michael Landeau is insane. I had the good fortune to see Bernie Torme with Gillan, the biggest Strat sound I have ever heard. That guitar instantly reminded me of that tone.

Great playing and time guys. Inspiring me…! I was in Andertons one day and I picked up an American standard Strat for less than £1000. Okay it was a little while ago but it wasn’t an expensive guitar and it had an absolute perfect strat tone to it. Absolute gem of a guitar. Equally I have a Custom Shop Jeff Beck which was considerably more expensive but is just outstanding in tone and set up. So… I don’t think you need to pay thousand pounds (£8k 😮) for a great strap, but I do think you need to travel length and breadth of the country playing as many as you can and then one day, you just find one that sounds absolutely perfect. There is a lot of variance in production and it’s that aligning of woods, pickups and hardware that nobody really has control over masterbuilders or not. IT FINALLY HAPPENED! Out of the blue, you guys kicked into that first groove, which was truly a killer. After you started the second, though, something grabbed me and I reached out and snagged my newest acquisition, a Donner DST-400 that I haven't really gone to work on yet, but am instead enjoying the way it is before I do my stuff to it. This truly is the Golden Age of Guitar Gear right now. My feeling is that getting a guitar as good as this one is would have cost at least $400-$500 back when I was getting serious about the guitar and my band. Gaining the tools and knowledge to use them to do fret jobs and the setups that come afterward has probably already saved me hundreds of dollars, with many hundreds more to come. Well, it ain't ready yet, but who cares? I grabbed that Donner and just started playing along. I've never been pulled in like that before, but it's cool. I've still got the axe on my lap as I type. It always takes me a little while before I can manage to put them down after playing them.😎
As a former drummer who played in a lot of Bands and played in a lot of genres, i always was a sucker for great guitar players and great guitar tone. My gosh.....those Stratocasters sound UNREAL......once you've heard a great sounding guitar and it's gorgeous tone.....you will recognize it immediately......i mean.....hats of to the master builders......for putting such lovely instruments together.....jeez they even sound much better than a lot of prs private stock guitars!!!
This video is a perfect example of the REAL depth of Rabea as a guitarist. He is my favourite guitar player of all time and vids like this make that call so much easier to back up. Even when pete was Soloing his rhythm was so tasteful and served the jam so well. All the solo chops in the world can't teach you that.
@@sillysausage4549 what is so tragic about his comment ? His favourite guitarist is a really talented individual with a nice style of playing (a nice guy and good teacher on top of that). The only way to contest his opinion would be to compare Rabea with another guitarist saying that he's not as technical or do not impact the "culture" as another one would. It would be saying that you need to like technical players who are popular, with no place for your own sensitivity, style of playing, etc. Let's not be boomers, this generation of guitarist has people like Tim Henson and such, I think UA-cam did a lot for them (mainly by making the lessons and video tutorials accessible to more people).

@@NintenDub I have a Squier Tele and a Squier Strat SE. Got the Strat SE for 40 euros! It has a birdseye maple neck, tones to die for and has relegated my MIM Strat to the case in storage! The Tele, I have upgraded a fair bit, but still under 200 euros!
Even more insane, they cost more because after building them they make them ugly and damage them. That creates strange situation. Customer: Why do I only get 1000 pound if I trade in my Strat. Salesman: because it has some scratches and some stains on the neck. Customer: why is that masterbuild so expensive ? saleman: because it has scatches and staines on the neck.....

Bought a used HSS non-trem bullet strat for US$80 during the pandemic. I learned to level and crown the frets. I replaced the pick ups. It now plays and sounds like an absolute dream. That's how I buy all my guitars now, bargain basement used instruments that have a great neck shape, the rest can be modded to suit me.

Great demo! I really love relic guitars but with light aging, finish checking, and the odd ding. These guitars looked too abused to me and perhaps done so to justify the price tag. However, I reckon that Josefina Campos doesn't get enough credit for making such fantastic-sounding pickups which must contribute just as much to these instruments as does the build.

Is there any considerable difference between a Masterbuild Fender Strat and a Custom Shop: I have a Custom Shop 1956 Strat light relic and I think it´s the most perfect guitar I ever played already..

apart from Jimmy making love to it, of course they are worth 8K and more. Maybe not to you or me, but the amount of hours to put it together alone adds up to a couple of grand. These are hand built, not mass produced. Anything hand built will cost you, especially if it is made in the west
@@philippehendrickx1109 Well that's where the BS starts, there isn't a guitar that isn't hand built, if they could make them without humans they would, and often the bulk of the work takes place in countries with extremely low wages on production lines, with finishing, or even just adding labels, in the country of supposed manufacture. If you want to pay £8k there are plenty of custom guitar builders who will happily sell you a £2k guitar for £8k. 🤣
@@mrljgibson Well, Fender/Gibson custom shop guitars aren't built in China by slave labor. They are built by very talented craftsmen who aren't cheap, and making one of these guitars probably consumes quite a bit of each one of these folk's time. And they are probably taking the choicest woods as well, which are always expensive.
Ah worth is relative. The reason fender made these and charged what they do is custom shop sold so well and made so much money, and special editions sell and make money, so they’ll keep adding a tier until people stop buying them. The markup is of course huge - it’s way past the point of diminishing returns thousands of pounds ago. But in return they’ll always go that bit extra to justify the price. So is it worth it? Not to me at half the price, but so long as it’s worth it to someone they’ll keep making it, and then they’ll make a plus version, etc. until nobody thinks it’s worth it. Ultimately if you have the money to spend and it makes you happy… it can’t be that bad.
if you've ever built a S style guitar Or if your ever bought a custom shop start its safe to say there's not modern strat is worth that kinda money. I ordered a 66 CS strat back in 2012, I waited over a year for it to be completed once it arrived i was happy with it but from that day forward i started building my own S type guitars & i do it at a CS level, one can build a quality strat for around 800$ to 1200$ depending on parts used & its a guitar you'd be proud to own.
This is what I did over lockdown. Got a luthier to do the nut, ended up costing £1400 for a CS level instrument that I'll treasure To me there's nothing cooler than having a guitar with dings where you can explain where they came from. Nothing lamer than buying those scars
I think past sorta £2000 is when a players psychology towards a vibe/brand takes precedent over build quality and sound. I'm more impressed that they've managed to make the regular custom shop relics look cheap. Who tf actually is buying these though lol.
I agree with you, ANY guitar past that price point that isn't vintage or custom or even signed by a famous player or multiple music legends is pretty much ridiculous lol. I wouldn't even spend more than $1500 on a guitar that doesn't have one of those features.
I just bought a used custom shop Strat for 3300ish USD. Is it too expensive? Yes. Is it ridiculous to buy a pre-damaged guitar? Yes. Do I love it? Hell yeah. At some point, yes it's mostly psychological, but there are worse purchases than a guitar that will not lose much value when bought used and which is a real joy to play.
Does Rabea still do live concerts? If so does he come to the US to put any of them on? I would love to see him in concert. You two are amazing when jamming. What a joy to watch and hear. Thanks for the video and info. What a blast the play out.
Probably best to check what Leo Moracchioli / Frogleap are doing, guess he still tours with them. They seem to have shows in Europe this year, nothing in Us though.
I would NEVER spend more than about $1500 on a guitar unless it was a GENUINE custom guitar or a vintage guitar. I’m at the point where I’m going straight Japan when it comes to fenders. Fender should’ve NEVER stopped making the American Standard instruments, they were EASILY THE BEST guitars for the money! Quality, price, tone, playability. Such WONDERFUL guitars. Even the new guitars are NOWHERE NEAR the American standards. I played the professional 2 and it was nice, but you could just tell there was a lack in quality and tone from the old standards and American deluxes. I hope Fender can bounce back and make wonderful guitars again for $1000-$1200 new again. The fact that the professional 2 is $1600-$1700 is OUTRAGEOUS.
For the people at Fender, it's all pure math. I seriously doubt they'll ever go back to the Standards. Without an occasional AVRI model, they push the more knowledgeable buyers that appreciate ''a real deal Fender'' towards the Custom Shop models. So, if one wants a ''traditional'' Fender, he has to part with $5000. Period. I too have a beautifully set-up Am. Series Strat with Lollars in it, (not that the stock pickups were inferior), and it's easily on par with the best of the best Strats out there.
For about $1500 US you can get high grade components and build a partscaster and with a few days work have a guitar = to any (Masterbuilt) guitar. The excessive cost ISN'T EQUAL TO THE HYPE. There are some darn fine pickups out there and some pickup makers who will do some up to your spec for reasonable money. The new Fender CuNiFe for Strat pickups (best I've heard) Pete demonstrated as Lee interviewed the Fender pickup guru Tim Shaw
As a hobbyist luthier, I'm going to have to make a comment here. Now, I don't think Masterbuilt Strats are worth £8K+, but you aren't going to get a partscaster as good as one unless you put in all the work to all the nuances. The amount of partscasters I've fixed/improved for people because ignorance prevails and guitars are not as simple as buying and neck and a body and bolting them together. There is also a balancing act to a lot of the electronics that is a step beyond the pickup choice. If the guitar is a little too hot, a little too bright or a little muddy, a) do you even recognise that and b) do you know how to fix it? Do you know exactly what you are aiming for? I mean, you can build a partscaster easy and it'll be perfectly serviceable and with care and refinement you can make it amazing. It can probably rival a lot of guitars in the $1500 range you specified. But without experience and knowledge, it probably won't be amazing. The nuances are what I'd expect the Masterbuilt Strats to nail, if I ever get to pick on up and inspect it.

@@roycedot That's the wrong take on what I said. I said masterbuilt guitars have probably had someone who knows what the fuck they are doing addressing the hundreds of minute details correctly. At least that's what you'd expect. I focused on pickups because of OP. But I mean those things by choice of components from not understanding how it all works. A lot of people really don't. Minor differences in consistency on components (pots, caps, windings, magnets, etc) can all have an effect and do you know what to change and do you have the tools to measure the audio output?

For example, they can sort the wood to have the lightest body but some people prefer heavier bodies/guitars and think those will have certain tonal qualities. There is no one-size-fits-all "correct" guitar other than clean frets, straight neck with working truss rod, stays in tune, the electronics work - everything else is subjective, and I don't think there are "hundreds" of differences to be found between a Masterbuilt and any other Strat/Tele
There's videos like that out there. Comparing Squires to vintage and such. Then answer is if they did I blind test most wouldn't be able to tell you for sure which was which through the same rig. Never mind if they add gain and put it in a mix....
However… the person playing them would tell the difference in less than a micro second!! I have 7 Strats including a few American Artist Series, American Original, American Ultra Luxe, American Pro, and a Vintera 60’s Modified. There’s not even a question for one micro second how much astonishingly better in every possible way my Fender Custom Shop Strat is in comparison and I’ve been told that level of difference is once again equal when comparing a Masterbuilt Vs a regular Custom Shop!
I know not 1 but 2 people who have recently managed to buy real pre CBS Strats for a sum similar to these. They were both sold on the premise the guitar was to be used by them, not sold on for profit and kept going making music. Not sure how many sellers of pre CBS Strats there are that value that gentlemen's agreement over the insane values.... but if I know TWO people that have got them.... shows they are out there :)
I feel like if you have the time and the patience you can make a regular American strat or ultra strat into a "custom shop one" upgrade the electronics have it setup or set it up meticulously yourself. Buy a set of josephina pickups and it's basically a custom shop strat. If you want to do a little extra get it plek'd. Imo the setup and the pickups are the most important. Then get a good hi fi cable and a nice amp that pairs with a strat and your favorite pedals.
Without fully watching this video yet, I have to say... I recently tried two custom shop strats at my local store, one was a dog, and the other was better, but only OK. They were $4700 guitars! I'm no stranger to custom shop instruments, I own 4, three from earlier years (2006/7 ish), and one from 2022 and they are miles better than what I tried in the store recently. I think with these instruments, firstly it's subjective, and secondly, I do think they can vary wildly, and you have to try a bunch and find the right one that sings. I would hope that the masterbuilts are less variable in that regard for the price. I've never tried one, and I'm not sure if I want to. That could turn into a costly bad habit. Edit: OMG that Landau strat sounds truly fantastic.

I personally don't understand the hate for worn in guitars. Years back, I finally had enough money to get an American Deluxe Strat and after living with it for a few months, I realized that I didn't like it at all. Too slick, didn't like the pickups and I was afraid to even play it out for fear of dinging or getting it stolen because it was so shiny and expensive. Long story short, traded it for a Mexican Road Worn 60s Strat at the time and I never looked back. I'm not saying that I think the prices of these Masterbuilts are justified, just saying that to me, pre-worn guitars aren't any different than a pair of broken in jeans or a used car. Sometimes you don't want to worry about it's condition and just want to play the damn thing without worrying about getting it sweaty, jacked up or stolen. In my case, the Road Worn was the perfect combination of comfort and price.
I agree with you my friend. I have an American pro 2 Strat. It is the American standard from 2021. I have no fear of dents and scratches and worn off paint finish. Just play and enjoy.
Flipping EPIC playing! Love Custom Shops but pricing is out of reach for most of us. Although, I appreciate and understand the talent and artwork behind these but man tough pill to swallow @8K.
I played the violin for a few years before I finally moved across to playing guitars. Because of that I’ve never really understood why manufacturers finish their guitar necks. No self respecting violin/viola/cello/double bass builder would add anything more than a bit of finishing oil to the back of the neck of a stringed instrument.
What gets me even more is all the glossy necks. Who wants that? I play an unfinished neck these days it’s much better imo. Almost like the og string instrument makers knew a thing or two.
I hate glossy necks, my solution is to just use a Scotch-Brite pad on the back of the neck, it makes the finish on a glossy neck have a Satin feel. It works for me, but the reason for the finish is because wood reacts to the moisture in the air and thus a glossy neck will move less than a neck with no finish. So gloss is just more stable, and this is why its a thing for guitar's.
@@terrybanks5063 If a guitar comes with no finish on the neck at all, then it will move a lot more than a glossy neck will for sure. I am sure there is more than one way to take a raw neck and seal it, but I would always go for a Satin finish on the neck. If the neck comes with a gloss finish, I go with the Scotch-Brite pad trick to give the neck a Satin feel. Truth is, if you don't burn all the way through the gloss finish, ruffing up the outer layer of finish won't really hurt it none, as it still has gloss under the layer you roughed up. ..
@@martyshwaartz971 i'd much rather have a glossy neck on an electric guitar (where the wood doesn't make a noticeable difference to the sound coming out of the amp) rather than a different kind of finish that would require me to be more careful with it.
I recently picked up a Custom Shop 61 Super Heavy Relic black over 3-tone sunburst. It's ugly as hell and honestly the finish is nothing I'd normally ever really go for, but after playing 14 different CS strats--all being different, this nothing compared to the one I got. I am not a strat guy normally so finding one that really worked for me took a lot. Great video and tones. Thanks for posting as always.
Love CS guitars but really inmho past 2k for a very well built and beautifully setup strat, your really paying 6k for nitro on wood cosmetics/artwork and the name. Love Rabea and Pete playing together, some serious 🎸🌟
Warmoth neck to those specs: $400 Fully painted Body: $500-$1000 Pickups: $500 Hardware/electronics/plastics: $500 Professional Luthier setup and fret job: $500 Even doubling those prices with extra features, you're still a fraction of the Fender price. I get that some guys aren't handy and can't operate a screw driver but let's be honest: Leo Fender made his guitars so low-skilled workers could make them. I just don't understand paying this kind of money for a bolt-on guitar. I'm literally holding one in my hands that Fender could sell for $5000 at least and I paid probably a 1/4 of that as parts.
Nothing makes it worth £8k. It is like when you used to be able to get a Custom Shop Strat in 2014/16 for just over £2k is now £4-5k. Fender really are taking the mick (and have been taken to court due to price fixing/gouging). Prices increase, of course they do - just not to the degree Fender are bending us all over for.
Absolutely agree. This is happening in all luxury goods industries (price of a mid/high carbon road bike over the same time period: £4k - £8/9k). Obviously all in the eye of the beholder, but for me there’s a line around 2.4-4 for a really good teambuilt CS guitar and 3-6 tops for a perfect Masterbuilt). I own a couple of the former and got an amazing MB strat, which I love, at the bottom end of the old price range, and it’s a fab guitar. But turned my back on a Dale Wilson relic’d tele recently bec they wanted £8.2k even after discounting. I spent half the money on an SVL Supernatural and it’s a proper instrument. Once you get near 10k, might as well save up a bit more and get a player grade actual vintage strat or tele.
I like shiny guitars... but I also like relic's is that normal? also that's almost twice as much as a team built one do you think the Master builders get all of that or a big chunk goes to the custom shop...
Finally the best presenter team on Andertons is back. These strats are right up my ally. Just not price-wise. But I'll just restring my regular team built CS strat and give its fretboard some love.
When you see Rabea and Pete in the same video, you KNOW it will be great.

My feeling is that getting a guitar as good as this one is would have cost at least $400-$500 back when I was getting serious about the guitar and my band. Gaining the tools and knowledge to use them to do fret jobs and the setups that come afterward has probably already saved me hundreds of dollars, with many hundreds more to come. Well, it ain't ready yet, but who cares? I grabbed that Donner and just started playing along. I've never been pulled in like that before, but it's cool. I've still got the axe on my lap as I type. It always takes me a little while before I can manage to put them down after playing them.😎

As a former drummer who played in a lot of Bands and played in a lot of genres, i always was a sucker for great guitar players and great guitar tone.
My gosh.....those Stratocasters sound UNREAL......once you've heard a great sounding guitar and it's gorgeous tone.....you will recognize it immediately......i mean.....hats of to the master builders......for putting such lovely instruments together.....jeez they even sound much better than a lot of prs private stock guitars!!!

This video is a perfect example of the REAL depth of Rabea as a guitarist. He is my favourite guitar player of all time and vids like this make that call so much easier to back up. Even when pete was Soloing his rhythm was so tasteful and served the jam so well. All the solo chops in the world can't teach you that.

The only way to contest his opinion would be to compare Rabea with another guitarist saying that he's not as technical or do not impact the "culture" as another one would. It would be saying that you need to like technical players who are popular, with no place for your own sensitivity, style of playing, etc.
Let's not be boomers, this generation of guitarist has people like Tim Henson and such, I think UA-cam did a lot for them (mainly by making the lessons and video tutorials accessible to more people).

@@NintenDub I have a Squier Tele and a Squier Strat SE. Got the Strat SE for 40 euros! It has a birdseye maple neck, tones to die for and has relegated my MIM Strat to the case in storage! The Tele, I have upgraded a fair bit, but still under 200 euros!
Even more insane, they cost more because after building them they make them ugly and damage them. That creates strange situation. Customer: Why do I only get 1000 pound if I trade in my Strat. Salesman: because it has some scratches and some stains on the neck. Customer: why is that masterbuild so expensive ? saleman: because it has scatches and staines on the neck.....

Bought a used HSS non-trem bullet strat for US$80 during the pandemic. I learned to level and crown the frets. I replaced the pick ups. It now plays and sounds like an absolute dream. That's how I buy all my guitars now, bargain basement used instruments that have a great neck shape, the rest can be modded to suit me.

Great demo! I really love relic guitars but with light aging, finish checking, and the odd ding. These guitars looked too abused to me and perhaps done so to justify the price tag. However, I reckon that Josefina Campos doesn't get enough credit for making such fantastic-sounding pickups which must contribute just as much to these instruments as does the build.

apart from Jimmy making love to it, of course they are worth 8K and more. Maybe not to you or me, but the amount of hours to put it together alone adds up to a couple of grand. These are hand built, not mass produced. Anything hand built will cost you, especially if it is made in the west
@@philippehendrickx1109 Well that's where the BS starts, there isn't a guitar that isn't hand built, if they could make them without humans they would, and often the bulk of the work takes place in countries with extremely low wages on production lines, with finishing, or even just adding labels, in the country of supposed manufacture. If you want to pay £8k there are plenty of custom guitar builders who will happily sell you a £2k guitar for £8k. 🤣
@@mrljgibson Well, Fender/Gibson custom shop guitars aren't built in China by slave labor. They are built by very talented craftsmen who aren't cheap, and making one of these guitars probably consumes quite a bit of each one of these folk's time.
And they are probably taking the choicest woods as well, which are always expensive.
Ah worth is relative. The reason fender made these and charged what they do is custom shop sold so well and made so much money, and special editions sell and make money, so they’ll keep adding a tier until people stop buying them. The markup is of course huge - it’s way past the point of diminishing returns thousands of pounds ago.
But in return they’ll always go that bit extra to justify the price. So is it worth it? Not to me at half the price, but so long as it’s worth it to someone they’ll keep making it, and then they’ll make a plus version, etc. until nobody thinks it’s worth it.
Ultimately if you have the money to spend and it makes you happy… it can’t be that bad.

if you've ever built a S style guitar Or if your ever bought a custom shop start its safe to say there's not modern strat is worth that kinda money. I ordered a 66 CS strat back in 2012, I waited over a year for it to be completed once it arrived i was happy with it but from that day forward i started building my own S type guitars & i do it at a CS level, one can build a quality strat for around 800$ to 1200$ depending on parts used & its a guitar you'd be proud to own.
This is what I did over lockdown. Got a luthier to do the nut, ended up costing £1400 for a CS level instrument that I'll treasure

I just bought a used custom shop Strat for 3300ish USD. Is it too expensive? Yes. Is it ridiculous to buy a pre-damaged guitar? Yes. Do I love it? Hell yeah. At some point, yes it's mostly psychological, but there are worse purchases than a guitar that will not lose much value when bought used and which is a real joy to play.
Does Rabea still do live concerts? If so does he come to the US to put any of them on? I would love to see him in concert. You two are amazing when jamming. What a joy to watch and hear. Thanks for the video and info. What a blast the play out.
Probably best to check what Leo Moracchioli / Frogleap are doing, guess he still tours with them. They seem to have shows in Europe this year, nothing in Us though.

I would NEVER spend more than about $1500 on a guitar unless it was a GENUINE custom guitar or a vintage guitar. I’m at the point where I’m going straight Japan when it comes to fenders. Fender should’ve NEVER stopped making the American Standard instruments, they were EASILY THE BEST guitars for the money! Quality, price, tone, playability. Such WONDERFUL guitars. Even the new guitars are NOWHERE NEAR the American standards. I played the professional 2 and it was nice, but you could just tell there was a lack in quality and tone from the old standards and American deluxes. I hope Fender can bounce back and make wonderful guitars again for $1000-$1200 new again. The fact that the professional 2 is $1600-$1700 is OUTRAGEOUS.

For the people at Fender, it's all pure math. I seriously doubt they'll ever go back to the Standards. Without an occasional AVRI model, they push the more knowledgeable buyers that appreciate ''a real deal Fender'' towards the Custom Shop models. So, if one wants a ''traditional'' Fender, he has to part with $5000. Period. I too have a beautifully set-up Am. Series Strat with Lollars in it, (not that the stock pickups were inferior), and it's easily on par with the best of the best Strats out there.

For about $1500 US you can get high grade components and build a partscaster and with a few days work have a guitar = to any (Masterbuilt) guitar. The excessive cost ISN'T EQUAL TO THE HYPE. There are some darn fine pickups out there and some pickup makers who will do some up to your spec for reasonable money. The new Fender CuNiFe for Strat pickups (best I've heard) Pete demonstrated as Lee interviewed the Fender pickup guru Tim Shaw
As a hobbyist luthier, I'm going to have to make a comment here. Now, I don't think Masterbuilt Strats are worth £8K+, but you aren't going to get a partscaster as good as one unless you put in all the work to all the nuances. The amount of partscasters I've fixed/improved for people because ignorance prevails and guitars are not as simple as buying and neck and a body and bolting them together. There is also a balancing act to a lot of the electronics that is a step beyond the pickup choice. If the guitar is a little too hot, a little too bright or a little muddy, a) do you even recognise that and b) do you know how to fix it? Do you know exactly what you are aiming for?
I mean, you can build a partscaster easy and it'll be perfectly serviceable and with care and refinement you can make it amazing. It can probably rival a lot of guitars in the $1500 range you specified. But without experience and knowledge, it probably won't be amazing. The nuances are what I'd expect the Masterbuilt Strats to nail, if I ever get to pick on up and inspect it.

I said masterbuilt guitars have probably had someone who knows what the fuck they are doing addressing the hundreds of minute details correctly. At least that's what you'd expect.
I focused on pickups because of OP. But I mean those things by choice of components from not understanding how it all works. A lot of people really don't. Minor differences in consistency on components (pots, caps, windings, magnets, etc) can all have an effect and do you know what to change and do you have the tools to measure the audio output?

There is no one-size-fits-all "correct" guitar other than clean frets, straight neck with working truss rod, stays in tune, the electronics work - everything else is subjective, and I don't think there are "hundreds" of differences to be found between a Masterbuilt and any other Strat/Tele

There's videos like that out there. Comparing Squires to vintage and such. Then answer is if they did I blind test most wouldn't be able to tell you for sure which was which through the same rig. Never mind if they add gain and put it in a mix....
However… the person playing them would tell the difference in less than a micro second!!
I have 7 Strats including a few American Artist Series, American Original, American Ultra Luxe, American Pro, and a Vintera 60’s Modified.
There’s not even a question for one micro second how much astonishingly better in every possible way my Fender Custom Shop Strat is in comparison and I’ve been told that level of difference is once again equal when comparing a Masterbuilt Vs a regular Custom Shop!
Just play it and you’ll be able to tell, the difference is not 7500 dollars just saying
I know not 1 but 2 people who have recently managed to buy real pre CBS Strats for a sum similar to these. They were both sold on the premise the guitar was to be used by them, not sold on for profit and kept going making music. Not sure how many sellers of pre CBS Strats there are that value that gentlemen's agreement over the insane values.... but if I know TWO people that have got them.... shows they are out there :)
If they bought a Pre-CBS Strat for $8000.. they made a deal of the century.

I feel like if you have the time and the patience you can make a regular American strat or ultra strat into a "custom shop one" upgrade the electronics have it setup or set it up meticulously yourself. Buy a set of josephina pickups and it's basically a custom shop strat. If you want to do a little extra get it plek'd. Imo the setup and the pickups are the most important. Then get a good hi fi cable and a nice amp that pairs with a strat and your favorite pedals.

Without fully watching this video yet, I have to say... I recently tried two custom shop strats at my local store, one was a dog, and the other was better, but only OK. They were $4700 guitars! I'm no stranger to custom shop instruments, I own 4, three from earlier years (2006/7 ish), and one from 2022 and they are miles better than what I tried in the store recently. I think with these instruments, firstly it's subjective, and secondly, I do think they can vary wildly, and you have to try a bunch and find the right one that sings. I would hope that the masterbuilts are less variable in that regard for the price. I've never tried one, and I'm not sure if I want to. That could turn into a costly bad habit.

I personally don't understand the hate for worn in guitars. Years back, I finally had enough money to get an American Deluxe Strat and after living with it for a few months, I realized that I didn't like it at all. Too slick, didn't like the pickups and I was afraid to even play it out for fear of dinging or getting it stolen because it was so shiny and expensive. Long story short, traded it for a Mexican Road Worn 60s Strat at the time and I never looked back. I'm not saying that I think the prices of these Masterbuilts are justified, just saying that to me, pre-worn guitars aren't any different than a pair of broken in jeans or a used car. Sometimes you don't want to worry about it's condition and just want to play the damn thing without worrying about getting it sweaty, jacked up or stolen. In my case, the Road Worn was the perfect combination of comfort and price.
I agree with you my friend. I have an American pro 2 Strat. It is the American standard from 2021. I have no fear of dents and scratches and worn off paint finish. Just play and enjoy.

I played the violin for a few years before I finally moved across to playing guitars. Because of that I’ve never really understood why manufacturers finish their guitar necks. No self respecting violin/viola/cello/double bass builder would add anything more than a bit of finishing oil to the back of the neck of a stringed instrument.
What gets me even more is all the glossy necks. Who wants that? I play an unfinished neck these days it’s much better imo. Almost like the og string instrument makers knew a thing or two.
I hate glossy necks, my solution is to just use a Scotch-Brite pad on the back of the neck, it makes the finish on a glossy neck have a Satin feel. It works for me, but the reason for the finish is because wood reacts to the moisture in the air and thus a glossy neck will move less than a neck with no finish. So gloss is just more stable, and this is why its a thing for guitar's.
@@lfaf9509 a "no finish" neck should always be sealed anyway. not just finish sanded off. look up sealing wood, many ways to do it

If a guitar comes with no finish on the neck at all, then it will move a lot more than a glossy neck will for sure. I am sure there is more than one way to take a raw neck and seal it, but I would always go for a Satin finish on the neck. If the neck comes with a gloss finish, I go with the Scotch-Brite pad trick to give the neck a Satin feel. Truth is, if you don't burn all the way through the gloss finish, ruffing up the outer layer of finish won't really hurt it none, as it still has gloss under the layer you roughed up. ..
@@martyshwaartz971 i'd much rather have a glossy neck on an electric guitar (where the wood doesn't make a noticeable difference to the sound coming out of the amp) rather than a different kind of finish that would require me to be more careful with it.
I recently picked up a Custom Shop 61 Super Heavy Relic black over 3-tone sunburst. It's ugly as hell and honestly the finish is nothing I'd normally ever really go for, but after playing 14 different CS strats--all being different, this nothing compared to the one I got. I am not a strat guy normally so finding one that really worked for me took a lot. Great video and tones. Thanks for posting as always.

Even doubling those prices with extra features, you're still a fraction of the Fender price. I get that some guys aren't handy and can't operate a screw driver but let's be honest: Leo Fender made his guitars so low-skilled workers could make them. I just don't understand paying this kind of money for a bolt-on guitar. I'm literally holding one in my hands that Fender could sell for $5000 at least and I paid probably a 1/4 of that as parts.
Nothing makes it worth £8k. It is like when you used to be able to get a Custom Shop Strat in 2014/16 for just over £2k is now £4-5k. Fender really are taking the mick (and have been taken to court due to price fixing/gouging). Prices increase, of course they do - just not to the degree Fender are bending us all over for.

Absolutely agree. This is happening in all luxury goods industries (price of a mid/high carbon road bike over the same time period: £4k - £8/9k). Obviously all in the eye of the beholder, but for me there’s a line around 2.4-4 for a really good teambuilt CS guitar and 3-6 tops for a perfect Masterbuilt). I own a couple of the former and got an amazing MB strat, which I love, at the bottom end of the old price range, and it’s a fab guitar. But turned my back on a Dale Wilson relic’d tele recently bec they wanted £8.2k even after discounting. I spent half the money on an SVL Supernatural and it’s a proper instrument. Once you get near 10k, might as well save up a bit more and get a player grade actual vintage strat or tele.

I have a Friedman Vintage T, it was built by a master ie Grover Jackson and for less than 1/2 the price of one of those Fenders.
Sitting watching this and playing my Squier Jazzmaster.
Finally the best presenter team on Andertons is back. These strats are right up my ally. Just not price-wise. But I'll just restring my regular team built CS strat and give its fretboard some love.
