- Three people were killed and five more were critically injured after a mass shooting on the campus of Michigan State University on Monday night. The suspect, a 43-year-old man who has no connection to the university, died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound later in the night.
My heart goes out to the families, friends and associates directly affected by this senseless violence.

How come a non student gets in to Campus? How ? No security for checking ID’s ?
coming from a current college student, majority of campuses are "public". you don't need a key card to get into lecture buildings, cafeteria, or the library because they are all "public". the only buildings on campus that require and ID/key are dorms. also, none of the roads that lead onto campuses are cut off to non-students so they drive through the campus to get to where they need to go. "security" are usually just campus police stationed around the school. they don't really interact with people unless there is a reason. that's the best way i could answer your question from my experience

This is so sad and devastating, my heart goes out to all of those that were affected by this. It’s crazy that this happened because around the same time at night when I was falling asleep, I woke up suddenly having a full blown anxiety attack and after a few minutes I was able to calm down. I turn on the television and this is the first thing I see. I don’t know it’s almost like I was panicking at the same time this event was happening.

Make no mistake, these continue because the shooters are looking for that last bit of notoriety before killing themselves or going to jail. No matter the outcome, we have to start reporting these without giving any ID on the shooter. Don’t give them the fame they want. Make them fade in obscurity as a nobody.
That being said, I’m sure the campus is a “gun free zone”, and therefore a perfect environment to the shooter. I have to believe that if there were armed and trained students, teachers and personnel around, this would have ended much quicker and with less loss of life. Leaving the campus wide open with unprotected targets is not the answer.

@@HajjiDaBoul Well, depending on the age and familiarity with firearms, they may be older students or avid shooters. I’m not insinuating that a 17yr old out of HS should be armed up. There needs to be a few qualifications in there.
I’m just amazed at the number of people who think that by “wishing”, they can change human nature. As if 300 million people will suddenly decide to make themselves defenseless against criminals and/or the government. It hasn’t worked out well in the past for folks in China or Australia and the Aussies were caged in over a virus.
Even if you could agree to get the whole country to mystically surrender all firearms, the next killer would simply go on a rampage with a car or a knife. Do we then outlaw all of those? This is a people problem, not an inanimate object problem. Come on folks. Let’s use a little logic and reality in finding a solution here.

I recently moved to America from Ireland. It’s quite nice here….just a bit of an adjustment with the whole “try not to get shot in public” thing.
Much safer per capita here than migrant overloaded ireland. Stay out of big city cesspools and you'll be fine.
Don't live in a city, and you're all good. Shit, your neighbors will even help you out with bears or coyotes as that's the only real danger.

Then why do things like this happen almost exclusively in the US? It's true that high caliber criminals will always have access to weapons but they're not the kind of criminals who do these type of shootings for no reason. Those are average people who go through depression and decide to vent their negative emotions on others before killing themselves. The only solution to the problem would be banning firearms sales to random people, as it is in almost every other country in the world where these events don't happen. Surely it wouldn't be enough to stop gun violence in its entirety because, as you said, organised criminals such as mafia and gang members would be able to get contraband weapons, however it would drastically decrease. The absurd idea of fighting fire with fire and giving more guns to more people would only cause more casualties. Unfortunately, although the solution would be easy, due to the pressure of large arms companies and the support of conservative Americans this problem will remain for a long time and many more lives will be lost.
