      I mean dude practiced 4 hours daily for a year. I have all the time and still it’s hard for me to even practice 30 minutes everyday. Consistency is the key here.

      When I started to learn, barely could practice 10-15 minutes because my finger was hurt like hell. When I pushed myself then can't practice for two four days until my fingers get better!
      Then after my fingers get hardened, the edge of the hardened part cought into the strings, so pull-ups and hammers and stepping from one string to the other became hard and awkward and difficult. I need to file down the hardened skin on my finger when I played too much.
      So I'm questioning that four hour practice a day.
      Professional guitar player have trouble to play that much because their fingers get hurt after a couple of hours!

      Just because you can’t practice more than 30 min a day does not mean that people don’t.
      I know a few players that told me they practiced 8 hours a day for years when they had concerts and I asked an Indian sarangi player how much he practiced for fundamentals and he said : 12 hours a day for 10 years and I believe him.

    Love it. Notice month 1, how tense you were. Everything was strained and the strings were attacked pretty hard. That's one of the hardest things to do is relax. Second, is staying on top of unwanted string noise. Great job and I love the Stairway solo at the end!

      Yeah loosening up is definitely very difficult. But as with all things on guitar, it just happens gradually over time. Loosening up definitely seems to be key!
      And yes, learning to mute effectively has been a massive task so far haha. Turns out playing strings is only one part of guitar. Muting is the other half!
      And thank you, the stairway solo is a ton of fun 🎸🔥

  • @GripperCc
    @GripperCc 3 роки тому +54

    I spend about 3 hours a day playing so this with time you put down it pays off in the end because what we do in one year takes another 3-4 years to achieve. There are no shortcuts to learning to be good at guitar, but it has to do with how many hours you practice and then I mean practice and not sit and play/noodling to some backing track without have any goal. I have done exactly the same setup as you with scales and chords and it works great. I have also learned the Major scale and the seven boxes. One thing that I think is worth mentioning is that you encounter plateaus when you do not make any progress or very small steps forward during, say, a few weeks. This is where it is most important to just continue to practic scales and chords, practice songs etc. because it will be right as it is to give results and when you get over these plateaus with a solid fight you get the biggest wins. Unfortunately, it is precisely at these plateaus that many stop playing when they think they can not get better, but it is precisely at these obstacles that you have to practice even more to overcome that you stand still in development and right as it is you fly away and everything goes much easier. You working well and just keep fighting and we will become rockers in the end 😁

    You can improve your sound and intonation by
    -changing your string and setting the neck
    -setting the harmonics
    -working on real bends that are in tune
    -trying to make your long notes sound like a voice with the right vibrato
    Otherwise for one year of practice alone, without any teacher, that's impressive.

    I was self taught on bass about 12 years ago and played for about 3/4 years and then just stopped. Picked it up quite quick but I'm not sure why I stopped, but watching your progression in one year has made me want to pick up the normal guitar and learn. I've always wanted to and never done it but watching this and seeing I could be playing songs with the difficulty of Stairway to heaven shows me that I can do it again and want to. Thank for this video, it's what I needed to see.

    • @theoguitar220
      @theoguitar220  3 роки тому +1

      That’s so great to hear! It’ll be the best decision you’ve ever made to start on guitar. And going from bass to guitar will make you ease into it easier than the average person, because you’ll already have been used to bass strings, which are a LOT heavier and thicker than regular guitar strings.
      Also you can translate a lot of your past knowledge of rhythm from your bass playing over to the guitar. Bass is a super cool instrument as well, and one that I plan on getting into too at some point.
      So yeah, grab yourself a guitar and get shredding! 🎸🎸

    So good! I bought a Fender Squier as my first guitar back in 2008, when I was about 21 and I gave up only a few months in without learning barely anything! I'm 34 going on 35 and I went to a friend's house a few weeks back and something made me want to pick up and play again - he taught me so many things I didn't know or practiced before. After only a few hours of him showing me things I already improved so much even after a near 15 year break. Looking back, one of my biggest regrets is not keeping at it.
    I'm buying my first guitar in the coming days and I am so excited to get it and jam. You video is incredibly inspitational and by the looks of things you have set the bar very high for people starting their journey. Good for you man!

  • @namelessanonymous6
    @namelessanonymous6 2 роки тому +5

    Hey! That was awesome to see. Keep it up, and don't stop. When soloing, try to limit how far away from the strings you wander with your picking hand. It may not seem like much, but as you start wanting (if you start) to play faster leads and solos, you'll use more energy returning back to the string. Angle your pick a little more towards the ground as well. It looks like you have your pick parallel to the ground. Turn your hand slightly to the left (downward) so you can smoothly pluck up and down the string. It will save you for fast tremolo picking. I saw you tried to do a vibrato in your Stairway solo. You moved your hand left and right, but didn't really get the vibrato from your guitar. Try bending the string ever so slightly up and down ( thats why the hand looks like its moving left to right) and you will achieve your vibrato. Keep it going man, keep on learning. You never stop.

    Hell yeah man get that shit and keep after it nice to see someone practice alot and actually put the required work in , they say 10,000 hours of practice to master any instrument . Your on your way there. Most of this generation is not dedicated enough to do this and if something is hard or they are not a natural talent wint even try and forget about them practicing for hours a day. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished and Props to you brother . Respect

    Great work boss, I liked how you’ve dived into trying to improvise - keep that up, in fact do it as much as possible and for next year try to look into how to improvise, what notes will sound good around different chord progressions, don’t limit yourself to scales and triads, use arpeggios and chromatic lines as well, really really good progress man. Record a couple of chords that sound good together then practice playing arpeggios over each different chord, then connect them with some chromatic licks for example, switch to a scale for a moment etc.

    • @theoguitar220
      @theoguitar220  2 роки тому +1

      Hey that sounds quite tough 😕 I agree with Isaac though, in that you’re probably much better than you realise.
      Have you got any videos of you from before to compare with your ability now? I find watching back videos of myself occasionally is a good way to remind myself of the progress I’m making when nothing seems to be going my way.
      Something else I highly recommend you do if you haven’t already is to learn your 5 pentatonic scale shapes and connect them all, so that it’s essentially all just one big shape to you. Then put on some backing tracks on UA-cam and just play around in the scale, and see what kind of cool sounds you can come up with.
      I cannot overstate how much really getting to grips with the pentatonic scale has revolutionised my approach to guitar. It made everything sooo much less robotic, and has helped immensely with finding my own kind of play style. And recognising why songs and solos are the way they are, and so able to pick them up a lot quicker than before etc.
      And improvisation also just happens to be pretty much the most fun thing ever for me, so it also helps become a DRIVING FACTOR of your practice routine.
      Whatever your situation, keep on going, I’m sure you’re much better than you realise! And if you haven’t done any pentatonic stuff yet, I highly recommend that you do!
      But also, try not to stress. It’s supposed to be fun, so just do whatever’s fun for you. Improvisation with the 5 pentatonic shapes all connected as 1 has, for me, been the quickest way to really excel my own playing, and is just so sooo much fun. So that’s the approach I would take :)
      Either way, I hope you have a nice day 🎸

    great progress i can expect your probably better by now but just a few points dont worry too much about your speed make sure u can play it clean at slow speed before u do it fast and most underrated part about guitar is vibrato and practice with just the right amount of gain so your mustakes wont get masked by effects

    • @antoineaquino3055
      @antoineaquino3055 2 роки тому

      and u use too much of your index finger make sure to use the others too and u might be a ckapton fan so u can try his vibrato which is pretty hard to do but once u master it whatever u do u will sound great cuz of the great technique
