Great video! Quick question, How can I tell what notes are fitting in a solo of a song? Singing a melody or writing a solo that has a different melody than the main riff, yet is still fitting to the song is something I have no idea about. Is there some music theory rule on how to properly do this? It'd be much appreciated!

@@samirraza9069 The most basic way to start out is with the pentatonic scale! Search UA-cam about it there are plenty of videos 😊 also try coming up with melodies and singing it first and then try playing that on the guitar! all comes with practice

What really allowed me to grow as a guitar player and having a decent amount of time to practice revolved around my life choices. Rather than getting home from work and taking a nap, I shower and play guitar for an hour or two before the gym. Instead of spending money drinking and going out every weekend, I stay home and continue to jam. Granted I live a very simple life and don’t need much. Music is what makes me happiest in life.

I would phrase it differently. For most instruments, once you know the notes, it's easy to recall them. Many fall in order, or they have less than 20 notes anyways. Piano is certainly high up there for the number of notes but it is repeatitive and easy to see. Guitar certainly requires regular review and memorization for where the notes are and for the muscle memory of chords to remember them well. There's so many styles of guitar as well, strumming, arpeggios, sweep picking, fingerpicking etc. There's a lot of memorization to really go beyond beginner for guitar. However, to really be great at any instrument, you will have to keep practicing or you'll lose that skill.

I would like to address the "This is fake" and "You're weren't a beginner" comments. In the intro of the video I explained that I wasn't a beginner at the start of the challenge. I knew a few songs and I took lessons as a kid but all I remembered were the basic chord shapes. (0:17 - 0:32). I've also been producing music for the past 10 years so that definitely helps. Hope this clears things up ✌️

That's cool- but you're still not being entirely honest- with your vibrato and your thumb wrap on the John Mayer tunes- it's pretty clear you've been at this for some time indeed. Still a great video about how you spent each time slot of the 4 hours- but to pretend that you played triad shapes for an hour an then mastered them all over the neck- pretty ridiculous claim our you're a freakin' guitar genius and will be far beyond John Mayer in about 45 more days. Hell- far beyond Yngwie's sun (pun intended) if that's the rate you learn at! Also- looks like you were following Jamie Harrison Guitar courses- shout out to that- Jamies courses are the best available for serious improvement. I will say they've made me a far better guitar player in a year then 20 years of playing before I discovered them!

I know you don't need me to say this but screw all these haters man. Everyone wants to pick apart every little word you say in a video because they're jealous they don't have the discipline to practice 4 hours a day or they don't have the guts to record and upload it to youtube, or they haven't made as much progress as you. They hear the word "beginner" without hearing the entire sentence and then tear down every piece of your video that shows you weren't a beginner lol. The reality is that most of us guitar players picked up the guitar to noodle around because we were inspired by our favorite artists and most of us will do that for the rest of our lives without getting that good because we never had the discipline to do what you did. You should be so damn proud of yourself man, regardless of your skill level before this, and don't let these fools get you down. The guitar community on UA-cam, Instagram, and even Reddit from my experience has been overwhelmingly supportive and these guys def don't represent the norm. Best of luck in your music career man, you've won a fan in me.

@@blursedd I'm a month late... but just play songs you like and try to learn some other scales like full major and minor scales (learning the actual theory and counting the tones is helpful) will eventually get you to playing better and improvising better in the future. People who have played for a couple years are rarely this good. I find the "I was basically a beginner" storyline a bit....questionable. The way the movement is performed with both picking and fingering the strings shows a pretty long-term level of experience.
The well practiced vibrato via wrist flipping is also a pretty big giveaway. That usually comes after years of practice and takes a long time to gain the musculature for. That's not something you can just "do" after a few days (or even weeks) because you literally don't have the muscles or reflexes for it.
There were also a lot of "messups" that appeared downright intentional (mistakes that pretty much no one makes), coupled with perfect technique for the rest of whatever string was being played.
Another big "yeah right" was: The "I learned all these triads after one hour, and here, let me fly through them perfectly without any hesitation or having to think whatsoever about what my fingers are on." That was very well practiced with a huge amount of muscle memory on display. There's no way whatsoever that was just learned during the hour before that was recorded.
I don't doubt that you're learning, but you were clearly not even close to a beginner when you started.

I think it's essential for everyone to understand that practice time is relevant to you. If you have different priorities in life and/or a hectic schedule, a long practice session, maybe 1 hour or 30 minutes, let's say? Compare you to you and do the best you can do. If you are at that point where you want to make more time for guitar, then it is time to say 'no' to other things.

The most difficult is not to play every day and becoming better at the guitar, the hardest is to realize that when you stop playing for few days (and imagine for a few weeks or more) how much that can affect your playing and performing.....or course to rest sometimes by purpose to refresh and have a new perspective on the guitar can be healthy and a good thing... but what I mean, to be a REALLY good guitar player requires dedication and DAILY practice! and the Guitar does not forgive if you stop playing her... is very jealous!

    • @mebewoke206
      @mebewoke206 3 роки тому +61

It's probably the experience from producing and song writing as an artist that got him to improvise. Just keep playing!

    • @billhader8404

Improvising is just applying your knowledge of the fret board and creativity. Improvising well is just something that comes with time.

As some people already said yeah since I’ve been producing for the past 9 years the improvising part came a lot easier I just needed to practice the mind muscle connection but I would recommended try singing and making up melodies over backing tracks or over random instrumentals to start getting a sense of creating melodies then apply it to guitar

Well I just watched your video and yes it's exactly what I need to improve, theory and a consistent practice!! Thanks for the inspiration 😊🎸

Great video Marc! I joined an online guitar training course exactly 30 days ago (12/18/23) and I have been learning and playing at a minimum of 1 hour a day. Some days I practice an hour twice a day. What I'm most impressed with in your video is that your finger-picking your Strat. That alone is impressive!

well i began guitar on the 20th of july and i can say ive fallen in love with this thing. 6 hours a day with many (mabye too many) 9 hour sessions especially now that im on vacation. some of the notable things ive learned are cant stop by rhcp, under the bridge (until the 3rd verse) by rhcp, frusciante's bedroom lick and ive gotten very comfortable with my initial goal of getting comfortable playing like john frusciante (thumb chords, licks etc).

I wish you the best of luck with your playing. This video was refreshing and honest. I have been playing 40 plus years, 35 professionally and when recently asked about how to get good at it, my response was loving doing it when you are not good at it is where talent begins. There is now way around the hours needed, no short cut. Your approach will yield results!

Now, since I am already playing the guitar a year, all my experienced guitarist friends say that for the year, that is more than usual. I am definitely going to use this exact method, to see there it will guide me. Thank you for this inspiring content.

Reminds me of myself. Started under 2 years ago. Had an Epiphone acoustic from my dad. Did nothing for a year. Then at the start of this year, the school needed a guitar player for the jazz band. No auditions. The guitar player from the start quit and they needed ANYONE. So, I joined. The band director knew me, as i played clarinet and sax in the classical band. So I bought a $120 start copy, and went out. To make a long story short, had no idea how hard it would be. Had to grind my ass in lessons for weeks on end. Before this, I was playing 3 chord acoustic songs! But, doing that pushed me to where I’m actually ok (considering I’ve only played for under 2 years)
Anyway, congrats on the progress! Hope this journey goes well!
