I bought a TiVo Stream 4K and it has worked well. I've had an Nvidia Shield for over a year now and really like Android TV. I realized that the TiVo wouldn't have the power of a Shield, but I was pleasantly surprised with how snappy it is with normal streaming apps. This works great for a bedroom streaming box. My daughter likes it.
@YY8811 I haven't really tested it with graphic intensive apps. It does, however, do petty good with an NES emulator, but an NES emulator doesn't strain the graphics ability that much.
I agree that their's not enough apps integrated into their flagship streaming app. Because of that, I hardly use the Tivo Streaming app, but most of the apps I've seen available on the NVIDIA Shield are also available on the Tivo stream 4k box.
I have a TIVO Bolt and expected the TIVO stream would support it > It didn't and was a real disappointment. The Stream app is also a disappointment and your better off replacing it with feelgood app which has a lot more apps it supports and a nice interface. The stream otherwise is fast and has some good features. I disabled the stream app and replaced it with FeelGood app using keymap.
I thought this would solve my problem with an older tv that has limited apps. BEWARE AFTER FORKING OUT THE $49.99 MY TIVO STREAM 4K DIED 4 DAYS AFTER THE PALTRY 90 DAY WARRANTY AND HOURS ON PHONE TIME WITH PHILIIPINE BASED TIVO SUPPORT WILL NOT CORRECT THE SITUATION. BUYING A ROKU OR FIRESTICK AND CONTACTING MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY
Phil, thanks for including some benchmark scores. I really appreciate it. I think it would be a mistake for Tivo to raise the price to $70. If they keep it at $49.99 and with further bug fixes, this device could be a real alternative to the Fire 4K stick. I ordered one today for my Den. I want to do some further testing of my own with it and the Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 boxes I have. I also like to test out what the USB C port capabilities are. I have a couple of USB C to USB 3.0 converters and I plan to see if I can add additional storage to it. Some other Tubers have confirmed the device is side-loading capable on their videos, so this device isn't locked down. YAY!! Only real question is can we increase the storage on it. Also, can I add a gigabit Ethernet port. I have a USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet adapter already to test this out too. I plan to find out when mine arrives on Monday. For homes that already have an Nvidia Shield, this smaller cousin would be a welcome addition to a guest room or home office. It already has the familiar Android TV OS that shield owners have and I prefer it over Amazon's UI. I cannot wait to see what other tech tubers do with it once they figure out how to *root* the device.
No root needed, you can sideload everything for example X-plore File Manager app, available in Google app store, there is 2 ways, using WiFi file sahring to copy apk's to device or install directly from linked Web storage.
@@mikeblaszczak5346 From the USB-C port, the Linksys gigabit ethernet to usb 3.0 adapter did not work. The adapter did work with flash drives, but not with mechanical hard drives. I tried two 2TB drives, a WD passport, and a traditional 3.5" drive inside a 3.0 enclosure with its own power supply. The ethernet adapter does work from the MicroUSB connector but I bet at 400Mbps or lower speeds since it might be limited to USB 2.0. In that case, you will have to use the USB-C connector to power the TIVO.
Pros: 1. Android TV. 2. TiVo app brings together paid services. 3. Remote, (see also Cons 7.). Cons: 1. Power control (CEC), my unit is connected to AV receiver, it will turn on/off TV, receiver and control receiver volume, but unit is missing Power Control as Nvidia Shield have (also Android 9). When i'm not using it, it will randomly wake up and change inputs and when it goes to sleep it will shut down everything. Power settings needs to be added, otherwise it's not possible use it with receiver. 2. TiVo app doesn't inegrate live TV services like HD Homerun and Pluto. 3. Tivo app TV Guide doesn't have channel numbers, and no Exit, you have to use Home button. 4. Small internal storage, yes, you can add but it's extra cost. 5. No wired internet. 6. You can't remove or move TiVo Stream and Netflix tiles from Favorites first spots. No need them there, both have channels and you can't remove TiVo channel. 7. Remote, 25+ buttons but no dedicated Play/Pause, FF and RW buttons !? 8. Some apps are running slower than on same price class devices. 9. No color effect on main screen like other Android TV devices. 10. No phone app. Conclusion: 3/5, when all software related issues are getting fixed I will give 4/5. Basic official Android TV with TiVo app (similar to Xiaomi Mi Box S). OK device who has many paid streaming services and using basic setup (TV and TiVo Stream 4K only).
No one really knows yet. But I can say the Nvidia Shield 2019 can operate surround sounds with it's remote. It has separate IR controls for the TV and Amp. Both the Tivo 4K Stream and Shield 2019 run the same operating system. So there might be a possibility. But its a new product with some bugs that need to be ironed out like any new device does.
Hey Chris - We'll have a version of Cord Cutter's Today back in the future, but we're working on bringing some variety to the channel with new video types. Glad you liked this one and we appreciate your support!
Could you do a AirTV2 mini vs Tivo Stream 4k direct comparison? Both seem to cost the same (at this time) and both seem to be tied to Sling TV in some way. Both have built in Chromecast functionality but I believe the Tivo version would include Chromecast Ultra vs standard Chromecast. Tivo offers a discount on Sling if you purchase a Tivo Stream 4K, while Sling TV actually offers a free AirTV mini if you subscribe. I would like to see a comparison of the interfaces, Sling integration, Chromecast features, and any feeling you have about responsiveness of the interface. Thanks.
My TIVO BOLT OTA has been disappointing with respect to the built in streaming apps. I’m thinking this device has a way to go in order to be competitive.
I'm a TiVo guy from way back and I think a BOLT OTA (I have the BOLT cable) is a good idea IF they'd add more streaming services. The big deal about TiVo is the aggregator. The rest of all of it is handled by any number of devices and streams. I bought and tested the TiVo Stream 4k and I agree with the reviewer on each point. But, for me, I was not impressed with Sling - no locals, no CBS, CW, or PBS, and the DVR is limited. Add in the limited streaming services, and I might as well stick with Roku. I cancelled the Sling trial service but not before they nailed me for $35 for being 9 days instead of 7(!). I will keep the Stream 4k and check on updates but most of my viewing will be off my BOLT cable and my Roku. I had high hopes for the aggregator service which is the whole point about TiVo. This is the first iteration out of the gate and they've done a good job but more needs to be done to get me to drop cable and go with this full-time.
I received the Stream 4K yesterday and the USB port is de-formed so I cannot plug in a USB cable. I contacted support and was told I would receive a replacement after I returned this one, but I have to pay $12.30 shipping fee. It is unacceptable that I have to pay to return their defective product. I got nowhere with the support person so I insisted on speaking to a supervisor and after a long wait finally got connected and after going back and forth she finally agreed that I would pay the shipping fee and I would be reimbursed within 10 days.
I would highly not recommend buying this until Tivo has addressed the major issues and glitches It has. Why should anyone pay $49 for a product that has so many problems and glitches no way. I contacted Tivo and this device is poorly designed In my opinion. If your going to develop a product at least have regular USB port on the product and allow people to add external storage and have at least 32GB of storage or 64GB of storage
I really had high hopes for this device. This implementation of Android TV is awful too say the least. CEC doesn't work. Sling login fails repeatedly. The Android TV "live channels" app only works for Pluto TV not even Sling or OTA with Air TV. Don't waste your money.

Its not a shield Pro, if you need the power of the Shield pro this will not do it, but its better than Fire. Roku and even the Shield TV. TIVO told me this would work with my Denon Receiver and that I would get live TV without having to use an antenna. WARNING! It does not work with a receiver -- the sound will still come from your TV. Also, in order to get the so-called free TV, you must sign up with SlingTV at a cost of $30 a month. What the ..? that's interesting. what about the optical port? like, could u connect the tv to receiver thru the optical audio port? I know my bro in law has a tv config this way and he used Apple TV on it.
