Our FIRST Time in Cebu (Philippines)

- In this video of Living the Jo Life, we are exploring the amazing island of Cebu in the Philippines. First, we go on a tour of the city center, where we see some of the historic sites as well as the crowded and vibrant Carbon Market and the surrounding neighborhood. Next, we head to Cebu’s biggest shopping mall, the SM Seaside City mall, where we go shopping, enjoy a cup of coffee and try out a Cebu classic: the succulent and very tasty lechon. The next day we got up early to drive to the southern tip of Cebu Island to swim with whale sharks in Oslob. As it was very crowded with no spots left for swimming with the whale sharks, we ended up on a waiting list. We finally got the chance to go on a boat after 5 hours of waiting. What an amazing experience getting so close to these massive and magnificent creatures. It was definitely an experience we will remember. Next we headed to Kawasan Falls. Because of the long wait in Oslob, we barely made it into the park in time. The waterfalls were beautiful and it was very refreshing going for a swim. Overall, we had a fantastic time in Cebu.

Those are Saba Bananas at 3:04
It's a cooking banana mainly used for Filipino Banana Que and Turon.
The fat bananas are what we call Saba Banana. It is the kind used for cooking. If you have tried the Banana Cue or the Turon, it is that kind of banana. It is also sometimes included in some Filipino dishes like Nilaga and Pochero. I hope you can try those.
We also have Lakatan Banana, which has a bit of salty-sweet taste to it and yellow-orangey in color. These have thicker peelings with a somewhat edgy feel to it. Also, Latundan Banana, which has a bit of soury-sweet taste and pale yellowish color. These have thinner peels which are smooth and round.
Aside from these 2 popular kinds, there are also Señorita Banana, Green Banana (mostly for export due to clean-looking skin, but not really nice to your palate), and Butuan Banana (which is more like the Saba, but with too many seeds in it that you may not get interested in eating it), Morado (reddish peellngs), Lagkitan, and more.
That's so interesting! Thanks for all the information 🙂🙏🏼
New subscriber here... 🤩👌

Thanks so much for watching and subbing 🙏🏼 We really appreciate it 😊

Thanks for the kind welcome 🤗
Lovely mall
I remembered climbing and reaching the top of the falls at Kawasan and then jumping to the water.
Sounds like so much fun!
Great video once again. A lot of very interesting experiences. The whale-shark problem is difficult - I think sometimes as a tourist we have to accept that we're interracting with nature and animals in a sub-optimal way. It would feel different and "more natural" if you were the only people there, but that's an impossible fantasy. So might as well participate rather than not. Anyway, thanks for filming all these different parts of Cebu (and please dont forget to buy Ella those clothes which were so cheap and discounted, and did I mention cheap? 😆)
Thanks so much for watching 🙏🏼 Yes we were definitely on the fence about swimming with the whale sharks but we came all the way to Cebu to see them. We are glad we did in the end. I do hope they find a way to regulate it better in the future. Ha ha Ella and shopping 🤣
Enjoy your stay and take care❤
Thanks 😊

Hello there! I'm from Mindanao, Philippines. Welcome to Cebu! When me and my friends went to Kawasan falls almost 30 years ago, it was already a tourist spot but we have to walk from the main road (highway) using a dirt trail for about a kilometer or so to reach it. The resort huts were still rudimentary and we have to bring our own provisions like food and drinks and what not. There was no proper bath / toilet facilities back then. But the experience was unforgettable. Hope yours was, too !
It was definitely worth it to see the whale sharks. They are so beautiful. I hope they improve the system in the future though! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼

At 2:51 its Chinese Tangerine. At 3:06, we referred to it as Saba or Sweet Plantain. It can be prepared by boiling, whether it is unripe or ripe, and can be either boiled or fried.
Ah ok. Thanks for the information 🙏🏼
Those bananas are similar to plantain it’s used for cooking mostly or ginang-gang which is like banana Q but instead of deep fried and caramelized, it’s grilled and lathered in margarine and sprinkled with sugar
That sounds yum! Thanks for the information 🙏🏼

Thank you so much for watching 😊
The area you explored at the beginning of the video is the Carbon Market/Pasil district, located in the heart of downtown Cebu City. This neighborhood is often perceived as one of the more dangerous parts of the city. However, I appreciate your bravery in walking through Pasil's streets. This area is frequently overlooked, despite being the primary source of fresh produce for many of Cebu's major establishments. Though it is a place marked by poverty, it vividly represents the true essence of Cebu.
The small oranges you saw are known locally as 'KIAT KIAT,' which are mini mandarin oranges or clementines.
As a Cebuana myself, I completely agree with you that there is a lack of proper management when it comes to handling both tourists and the whale sharks. These majestic creatures deserve better than being used as mere tourist attractions. The current practice of feeding them to lure tourists is quite disheartening.
If you're still in Cebu and looking for more places to explore, feel free to reach out-I’d be happy to suggest additional locations for you to visit.
Thank you for visiting my hometown!
