Great choice, nice to see some recognition for the 125i. I imagine that’s one of the last built being a 2011. I had a 130i with the legendary N52 engine, super smooth and reliable - I’d highly recommend getting the remap done to 130i power as the 125i engine is identical but just ECU restricted to avoid being too close to the 135i’s power output. You’ll probably notice it running out of puff towards the top end of the rev range as that’s where the power is held back. Your trio of warning lights will more than likely be the ABS pump, when mine went I sent it off to ECU Testing for refurbishment and then it comes with a lifetime warranty if it fails again.
It’s gotta be one of the most underrated drivers cars out there. Doesn’t get more pure BMW than naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine, rear wheel drive, fairly lightweight coupe/ convertible. I have one from 2013 so they did make them a bit longer and the LCI angel eyes and tail lights really modernize the look.
Absolute gem of a car, absolute peach of an engine! A tuned 130i map, a nice exhaust and the Bilstein B12 kit will make this genuinely one of the best weekend cars you can buy in my opinion!
Your dad is a natural on camera Joel, and clearly has an eye for detail. What a legend. Great car for the money, I’ve always liked the idea of getting a 130i myself. You do need to chuck that horrible steering wheel cover in the bin though!
my bmw just got the three lights came on the other day, its very easy to fix, get the sensor off ebay they are super cheap, i used ebay ones and theyve lasted 2 years and only now they need replacing again (nothing to do with sensor quality my car just chews throguh them) the sensors are around £5-10 each off ebay but over £60 from euro car parts or similar, from bmw dealer theyre about a kidneys worth.
Thanks for making this video Joel , recently I test drove an e82 125i and decided it would be my next car ! Just looking for the right spec now , great choice on your dad’s behalf though.
Well done Danny. Great looking car and a smart buy. Always feel you add value to Joel’s videos too. Great video Joel 👌👏👍just needed Katy in it to make it perfect 👌
Most likely Drive shaft has rusted and swelled, pushing the ABS ring into the speed sensor, and it's worn away the speed sensor. Very common on this gen of 1/3 series!
Nice car! I think your tri light display is down to a ABS wheel sensor failure, I had similar on my Z4, wheel off and a 20 min job, the sensors are fairly cheap as well. Enjoy the car!
I literally just bought a 125i last week and the same trio of lights came on, and as Garry says just the sensor on the rear passenger side. £25 it was and all sorted. Loving the car!
I've had one of these actually in the same Space Grey for the last 5 years and no intention of selling it on, one serious thing you should do is buy another matching set of alloys and have them fitted with winter tyres. The M Sport suspension is the firm side of hard and it's been scary on sub zero temperature roads even with Falken HS01 winter tyres fitted to the matching wheels. In the summer though it's like a go kart
Congrats 🥳 I recently bought a 2010 325i coupe 👍🏼 mines got the N53 3.0L engine. Older e9x 325i came with a 2.5L. With a stage one it’s around 265bhp the same output as a 330i - I imagine it’s the same for yours 👍🏼👌🏼
Congratulations for the new car, I've had the same warning lights pop up on my e91 and it's probably a steering wheel angle sensor so hopefully it's not a big deal 😅
Hi Joel, great video and a great car your dad has chosen there. Regarding the warnings on the dash I had the exact same issue on my E82 135i Coupe. I may be wrong in your case but those 4 issues are thrown up when the steering angle sensor required calibrating. We did this on my 135i and it fixed the warnings for good. I had the 135i for a few years and had all of the issues associated with the 1 series E8X platform and I'm sure that these warnings are not anything more sinister. Quite possibly at it's worst it will be a wheel sensor or broken steering angle sensor but given the age of the car around 10 years+ old it's very common for the steering to lose it's calibration. It may have something to do with the wheel being refurbed and not being put back on properly. Hope it all gets fixed.
Congrats! Great car for the money. Great reliable engine. I have the 135i being a bit of a horsepower junkie (why no limited slip??!! had one in my last vehicle), but the 125i is the best for the budget. The N52 is a great engine and extremely useable horsepower. Great manual gearbox. M Sport is a great option too. I went from a 2 seater to the 135i and most of the time, glad I did. Room for 3-4 people, room for way more stuff when I need it, etc. I like the size of the 125/135 over the 328/335 too. They're nice, just like the smaller size. Cup holders with the manual are pretty worthless anyways. Get the one that clips on the passenger side. I'm going to try and make my own for the rear seat...just a single cup holder.
Great videos, brings back memories owned 2 125 's and yes one had the same fault turned out to be a sensor, love seeing the Godalming scenary on the videos my home Town 👍, DO you miss the 240
I have one of these!! Absolutely love it 😄 N52 is one of BMW’s best engines especially considering on this model specifically it’s tunable to 270+ hp Sounds great and I often get 43mpg on the motorway
Great buy, although I might be slightly biased as this is pretty much the convertible twin to my own 125i Coupe- mine is also a 60 reg, identical in every way except that mine lacks the bluetooth audio. Should mean your Dad's has a 'Combox' which should also allow you to plug an iPhone in to the USB port in the armrest and give you pretty good iPhone integration and USB music with the album art displaying on the iDrive- no idea how well it works with Android but seems like the bluetooth works well anyway. I'm also a fan of the red leather, really glad I've got it on mine as it brightens what could be quite a dull interior, although will politely disagree regarding wood trim- I much prefer the silver! I'd definitely check the steering angle sensor as others have said, that seems to be a common failure point when you get that trio of lights- and can often be solved by just giving it a clean which would be a nice cheap fix! Echo the recommendation of getting it mapped too, I've yet to get mine done but am planning to in the spring, makes a huge difference to the top end from what I've heard, and since it's essentially putting the factory map from a 130i on there's no danger to the engine. The 130i hatch also came with bigger front brakes which are a straight swap if you also change the calliper carriers and a cheap OEM+ way of getting some extra stopping power.
I’m looking to upgrade our TT for something slightly more practical. Great choice of car. I also like the colour combo. I’m gonna on the hunt now for something similar
Nice car well done dad. Just watch you left foot lol always a laugh when you two get together. That ABS light is probably but not a 100% lol. The drive shaft that rusts and puts the abs ring slightly out and makes contact with the abs sensor. There quite common on them . Enjoy your new wheels
Love the interior, fairly practical for a small convertible. The 3 lights could be a variety of things, on my E39 it was ABS pump (sent it off to ECU testing) and on my E85 Z4 is was the high pressure brake sensor (happened twice!). If it is the brake sensor buy proper brand new BMW part (£100 on the Z4) rather then cheap chinese knock off. Good luck.
Great cars - my first convertible was a 120i in silver over black. You'll notice a little bit of scuttle shake on a bad B-road but they're good fun cars. Presumably being a 3.0 litre it is a straight six? Our four-pot lunched its coil pack once and gave us a scare, they're not exactly economical on fuel, but your dad probably didn't buy it for hyper-miling!
Mine does 25mpg in town, over 40 when cruising at 70mph on the motorway and even with plenty of spirited driving my long term average is 31mpg so not too bad for a 10 year old 3.0
@@bwdrives That is pretty good - our old 120i was not so great - maybe because it had a small tank or something but I seem to recall it didn't even have a 400 mile range. My supercharged 5.0 V8 is better than it was.
Needs a remap to 130i power , mad not too as same engine bar tune and you’ll have another 50bhp, also the 125i has a shorter ratio so will actually be quicker than a 130i, evolve do the map and we’re one of the first to release the extra power. Also worth looking for some 130i Calipers / 123d as much better, believe the 320d are the same Calipers ,
Not sure if these had the timing chain issues......my mate had a 120d convertible and the timing chain snapped.......was on pcp too......was very expensive to get repaired.
Many forums say the engine in this is one of BMW’s most reliable ever made Only trouble is occasional oil leaks and the water pump usually goes some time before 100k miles
I had the 335i hard top convertible (2008). Drove it for 10+ years. Had to let it go as repairing getting expensive. If I had taken little more care of it could have driven another 4/5 years easily. Anyway, I miss it. Don't like the newer models as the 2007~9/10/11 models. Now just using old toyota to save some money. So that I can buy a range rover lol :D Maybe I will buy the 335i convertible again if I find one in good condition. But not now.
I looked into one of these a few years ago and even though it has the same engine as the 325i the official fuel consumption figures are slightly worse even though the car is lighter!
@@bwdrives I stand corrected then, strange that BMW made two completely different engines in the same timespan with the same displacement and power outputs...

Damn I've always liked the 1series coupe. Recently bought an e46 330ci convertible facelift after enjoying my z4 to the max for almost 3 years (still have you to thank for convincing me to buy a z4). Stumbled upon it while just looking around on the internet while actually looking for an e89 z4 but they're like your dad said indeed a bit too expensive. The lights are the reluctor rings in the drive shafts. The abs sensor reads the rings
Own an F82 M4 and an E82 128i, the 1 series is the more fun car to drive in a practical sense for sure. N52 in such a tight chassis is a great combo.
