Had to watch it like 3 times .... but still interested to see Winston's ascension and get back. Who's John Wick's pappy... and all that :D My first hunch is Frankie but that's if he got one off before he was unalived. :D So my guess is Franky is the Pappy or Winston is maybe the pappy if Yen falls for him or Yen goes back for little baby that she was protecting from crack head room or whatever that lady was. Couldn't tell if she got shot. Also curious to see how John got Charlie's car.
Yes, I called that too. Everything checks out with heritage , based on Keanue, he’s a mutt mix of everything. But Chinese. And native and white , check. Well the lady Vietnamese but still …
But he wasn't of Russian descent? John was born Jardani Jovonovich in Padhorje, a village in the Byelorussian SSR of the Soviet Union, on September 2, 1974 and the series supposedly takes place in the late 70s
@@ghostskull3815 mother probably pregnant, gonna flee and hide in SSR. Show takes places in the 1970’s . So it’s very open to possible. John bio says he was taken in as an orphan by John’s fathers friend , Winston or Uncle Winston
Loved this episode so far!! I was hoping you were going to cover this. Wow, can’t believe I caught one not mentioned, but Winston runs into the someone saying “I’m walking here!” Aka Midnight Cowboy. Just went and verified … it’s at 0:55:49 when Winston realizes where his brother is and squeals a u turn. The guy saying it is in a cowboy hat and barn coat and raises his hands when he says it
Prediction: Frankie’s wife is pregnant. Winston promises to take care of her. She gives birth to John but is killed. Winston now connected to the universe gives John to the Ruska Roma to be taken care of, and trained. This is why Winston has such a soft spot for John, his nephew.
I'm so glad the episode was over an hour! I hope the next 2 episodes are of a similar length. As much as I love the action, more world building is also very welcome, the scene where the police woman went into the hotel was incredible, as soon as she pulled out the money I got goosebumps and can't wait to see what happens with her character now.
loved this episode and excited for the two other episodes. john wick not being in it BECAUSE ITS A DAMN PREQUEL isn’t a valid reason for people to hate it
Fantastic opening episode. Excellent little spin-off, cool characters, Love the first episode I always like Winston and it's cool that we get to see his life. This was an action packed, none stop! Looking forward for the next episode. Highly recommend this series!
I don't know if anyone else has said it already, but at 2:50 Frankie didn't 'steal' that bottle of champagne, he noticed and picked up an empty bottle and handed it off to a guy to have it refilled/replaced. He even shook it to double check that it was completely gone, he's playing the role of being 'responsible' and taking care of the patrons during the party.
For a first episode of show, it was DYN-O-MITE! From the opening credit to the last, plus the kick ass songs they played , it was a hit for me. Also, we had a glimpse of the making of the ballistic kevlar suit we saw in John Wick 4. Dunno if you guys mentioned that :S
Omg I was so scared to watch this review of yours because I loved the first episode of the Continental It would have broken my heart if you had been critical of it like I’ve seen all over UA-cam so thank you for a brilliant review on this series!!!
Another great video and Doug in his bullet proof John Wick Suit was EPIC and he is the Boss!! Thanks Ryan and Doug Wick for another fantastic video and explanation of things and all the symbolism and easter egss. Don't mess with Doug Wick!
I am really loving it so far. I have read and seen some reviews that don’t like it for a host of reasons but I think those reasons are based on preference for wanting the same look and feel of the movies that we love. However I think if this looked and felt like the movies it would not show how the environment/world pre John was different. Plus I went into this episode seeing how it will fit into a world that the producers are trying to create not how this fits into the John Wick world. Love your video can’t wait for the ones for 2 & 3
3.30 the horse is also a nod to Bianca Jagger's famous moment riding a horse into studio 54. Studio 54 being an alternate reality space with alternate laws and rules that defined the 1970s. By the way the disco-music selection was dope.
I totally enjoyed this episode. Thanks for the breakdown and the stuff about "Be Seeing You." I never realized this was carried through all the movies. So cool!
I think his brothers wife is pregnant... with John. They talked about starting a family. Maybe tey alreay have, Winston always seemed fatherly to John.
I thought this episode, as an opener, was really strong. Can't wait for the next one. Here's a little easter egg for you... the blonde thug in the kilt who works for the Adjudicator is played by Kirk Ward who was also the writer, the show runner and an exec producer!
I'm a huge fan of John Wick but didn't know that Screen Crush has videos on the movies. I'll have to check them out. I loved E1 of The Continental! I think Rotten Tomatoes got it all wrong. This video nailed it. You pointed out the taxi from Taxi Driver (cool!), but I'm pretty sure I heard the line "Hey, I'm walkin' here!" in the background. Dustin Hoffman's words in Midnight Cowboy when he almost gets hit by a taxi.
The Continental never confirms that Frankie/Yen were John’s parents and I feel it’s a missed opportunity to confirm Winston as John’s uncle. Maybe we can assume Winston respects John because he reminds him of his brother, but John’s origins are still unknown (again a wasted opportunity and making the Continental a one off mini series).
8:39, It also retroactively furthers the point that John is a different breed of menace among other the various menaces in this underworld (dog breed reference absolutely intended).
I’m guessing that Frankie is Jon Wick’s dad, with Yen obviously being his mom. That’s why Winston looks out for Jon and it suits Keanu’s biracial look. Seems too perfect not to be true.
Great start with amazing action. Dude I always watch ur movies or tv shows breakdown for years, but this time you forgot to mention the legend " charon " may his soul rest in peace 🙏🏾😔
I’m going to watch it over. It was hard for me to get into not because I didn’t like it but because I just didn’t knw nothing about that universe of it in John Wick. But I watch now that I have a connection to Winston.
I find this very pleasantly ironic that The Continental is premiering the same day the WGA strikes end considering that unlike numerous other Hollywood stories, John Wick is actually Derek Kolstad's original concept.
Did you notice in the opening scene where we’re introduced to Cormac, that as Frankie walks away Cormac speaks to his wife asking her “where you been?” Insinuating that she is the wife Frankie was balling.
With the idea that Frankie and Yen are John's real parents maybe this could build towards a plot in John Wick 4 exploring John and Winstons relationship.

The helicopter scene is what led me to that Yen and Frankie are John's parents
the horse in the beginning is clearly Studio-54 hommage, nothing more, but nothing less, for the continental being very New York-series
