I used to be very vocal about my distaste for the extended universe books. Once I started reading them though, I came to appreciate what they are. It was great to read about some of the powers in the books that I thought were so cool, but never had much known about them. I think any dune fan would be doing a disservice to themselves if they write the books off without giving them a chance atleast.

I think it would be cool to change up the map for broader expansions. My issue with the expansion factions is they weren’t there as a major player when the original six factions were, they don’t fit in the setting. I think it would have been better to maybe make a God Emperor era Dune, green with wolves and Letos desert. And have six factions for a whole different game, fremen, fish speakers, Tleilaxu, Ixians, Bene Gesserit, Spacing Guild for example

I had read a lot of negative views of the Brian Herbert books. So, I avoided them, but now that I have read some of them, I really enjoy them. They are fun and interesting. To be honest they explain many things better than Frank bothered to do now and again. Brian's knowledge of hard science fiction comes through more.

I think it makes a lot of sense to leverage the wider cast of characters. There's two things that really put me off of the "Movie Dune" game, even with it being simpler, shorter, and requiring fewer players to table. The lack of depth for many of the faction's leaders and the amalgamation of the Emperor, Spacing Guild, and Bene Gesserit into a singular faction, which was kind of necessary given how few of those characters were shown in the first film. If there's a second edition with the second film that adds characters we know will be in the movie like Feyd and The Emperor, that would be fantastic.

Like many expanded universes and content made by those outside of the creator/creative team, it will create division. That is because views and perspectives are different. There are some that do follow the vision pretty accurately, and some that don't.
I haven't read much of Brian Herbert's books/vision, but I can say is that it would be a waste to not capitalize on the content. You can make some pretty cool stories that don't have to involve Harkonnen or Atreides.
That said, I like the new factions as it helped with ideas of making cool stories for the Tabletop RPG too.

This kind of explains a lot. I've wondered why the expansions focused on more unknown factions when they could've done fish speakers or honored maitres etc instead.

Personally I don't see the big deal in using subpar books (which I recognize, though admitting I enjoyed the House trilogy because it was my initial intro into the Duniverse without which I might never have found Frank's superior books). It's simply additional, and interesting-to-play, source material. When you've got a game that makes it possible for anyone but Atreides+Fremen to win, you've jumped ship from the first book anyway.
For similar reasons I would've preferred Scytale and Bijaz to be included in there, since surely some version of them existed during the timeframe of the first book, or that Swordmasters to me deserve their own faction, but I won't moan about either. I'm just glad Jack and team have done a great job on all 3 expansions so far! Keep them coming!

Thanks for the videos! Any thoughts of the Swordmasters of Ginaz as an expansion faction?

We have some other ideas that will make sense soon enough.

Nice video, Jack, makes a lot of sense.
And I'm *not* a fan of Frank Herbert's writing style (front loaded world building, needing to read the glossary every few sentences, really took me out of the story)... but his worldbuilding was brilliant, and the philosophical introductions to chapters.

Don''t do it!!! The Expanded Farts of Dung bobo and the hack spew out are not only garbage on their own, but also an insult to the real Dune and its fans.
Far down the inner corridor, another voice screamed: “Never to forgive! Never to forget!”

    Thanks for the interesting video.
While I personally do not like what I have read of the Brian & Kevin books, I think it is fine to scour the material for names and inspiration. Even if I would have prefered to see ideas inspired by the first three books - God Emperor being too far into the future - be implemented first. For instance what about an Iduali faction? Or a south pole expansion?
Ohh, who am I kidding….GF9, shut up and take my money. An expansion to such a good game as Dune is an instabuy.
11:46 Ps. I found the first Brian/Kevin book to be way too childish in style, and like Phantom Menace was filled with too many explainations for things that did not need to be explained. Sometimes a mystery is better left alone as an explaination can cheapen the experience.

I get why you guys uses it. I specifically hate the books because the writing is subpar (it’s Kevin J Anderson after all), and it contradicts the main books. Specifically, the Butlerian Jihad. It never was Humans vs Machines.
But anyway, to each his own.

    • @DanielHolding

Having (until recently) not read the extended books, I always presumed the Butlerian Jihad was Humans vs Machine, been a while since reading the first Dune but isn't that what they reference it to be?

    • @martins3655
      @martins3655 Рік тому

@@DanielHolding Herbert explained the Butlerian Jihad as the fight again thinking machines…. That were controlled by other men. Men vs machines is so painfully simple it’s unlike the rest of the books.
Until we see those magical found notes, I l’ll still think they made it all up.

It’s Cymeks that caused all the chaos..which is then in line with what the Tyrant Leto said about the Butlarian Jihad.
