- Can South Korea Be The New Multicultural Mecca of Asia?
Living in Seoul South Korea is starting to change. I remember when foreigners were scarce and sparsely populated around the city. Now, we're everywhere! These are very interesting times to live in South Korea, as we can literally see the culture changing in front of our very eyes. Multiculturalism is met with different views and opinions, but I tend to look at the bright side of everything. Without the salad bowl that South Korea is becoming, I would not have been able to meet new friends from diverse and multicultural backgrounds. I don't know if South Korea should completely become a multicultural country, but I like that foreigners are becoming more visible in the country.

Going to Korea was a shock to the system to me. Everyone's so polite, everything is clean, (And expensive, but that's expected) and was honestly one of the best vacations I've ever had.
Korea is changing right before my eyes! I DEFINITELY don't want Korea to open up too much that it loses its own unique identity, but I do love that I can meet people from all over the world here that I probably would have never met if I stayed in the States or Europe! What do you all think?!
Oh yes 100% agreed. Diversity is a good thing but without conformity, it just becomes a chaos where everyone fights for everything which is quite sad to see in some countries in EU and the US. People must come together and share common thread of culture and identity regardless of their background.
@Xentradi97 I couldn't agree more. It's possible to retain your first culture and still fit into a second or third culture. Complete aculturation or conformity isn't necessary, as you so eloquently wrote. Seriously speaking, the only way we can move forward is together.

@francoismarc3, your videos make me want to do a Seoul/ Ulaanbaatar combo visit. But Naadam festival would be good weather but rainy season in Seoul. What is the best weather months for a combo trip? April? October? I like it a little cold.
Yoooo, that would be an awesome combo trip! Best seasons to visit Korea are spring and fall: Mid April-late May is especially nice! UB becomes cooler in September I think. When I visited in August, the nights were already becoming quite chilly. That would be a super crazy combo trip! Please document that on video!!

I am from the Netherlands and I can tell you Amsterdam is more multicultural than Seoul. Maybe in your experience you did not meet many people from outside Europe in Europe when you were living there but bro I can tell you that doesn't mean they aren't there. Amsterdam has many big international companies setting up offices there that came from abroad and bring employees from those countries there. In Amsterdam for example you have a chinatown, Korean churches, japanese language schools, thai/vietnamese restaurants and so many opportunities to meet people from different countries. Even in restaurants they now approach you and ask you for your order in English because they do not speak dutch anymore.
Cooooooool, thanks for sharing. I've been to Amsterdam once, but didn't find it as international as I thought it would be. Maybe things have changed. Still, I think I have seen more people from different countries here in Seoul than any other place I've traveled to, except Thailand. I'll give Amsterdam another shot later! Thanks again, bro!
Netherlands is a ticking timebomb with a soon coming explosion of certain nasty demographics which has been brewing for a while now. All you European countries who engaged in self genocide with mass non white immigration will only realise after the damage has been truly done.
Immigration has been a disaster for western countries so I really hope that Korea and Japan don't make the same mistakes.

I'd argue Hong Kong or Singapore or even the touristy cities of Thailand, Bali are significantly more multicultural than Korea already, where they accept foreigners as a way of life. HK/Singapore, started out as immigrant city-states. Poor South-East Asian countries(no offense) view foreigners as their livelihood. Korea has no such history of depending on outsiders so, they will never feel a reason to be grateful for outsiders and that's why I believe they will never accept other cultures as equals.
I thought Bangkok or Singapore could be the new Mecca, but their soft power reach is short. Korea has so many cultural aspects of it's society exported daily...I don't think the other cities can compete, but I do get your point. Bangkok was more bustling with foreigners, but it didn't seem like there was much to do there besides constant partying. I'll have to visit again!
In terms of soft power, Korea and Japan didn't attain it by embracing diversity. They did it by creating and protecting their own unique identity. If you want a place which embraces diversity, then by definition, they can't really have their own unique identity as they have to deal with other cultures and identities mixing with theirs. So, in Asia, it does appear that diversity and soft-power are mutually exclusive, until there is evidence that proves otherwise.
@AxsIav Well, the argument wasn't where soft power originated in Asia, it was if Bangkok or Singapore would be the new Mecca of multiculturalism in Asia. So, I formed my rebuttal around that premise. However, I understand your words. Thanks.
You are absolutely right
I've lived and travelled through Asia extensively for years and S.Korea is BY FAR the most ethnocentric and racist(not everyone but sample size large enough) Asian country towards non-whites and people from countries of smaller economic power in comparison. It doesn't matter how much their soft power serves as a facade to this glaring issue that most tourists don't get to see.
As Koreans travel around the globe a lot and K pop cultures do too, they seem to open their mind faster than ever.
People outside of Koea and vice versa.
I think you are right!
1. Anyone who enters the country legally and engages in economic activities legally is welcome.
2. Anyone who does not commit a crime and abides by the law is welcome.
3. Anyone who wants to stay in Korea for a long time must be able to speak Korean. Language is the most basic tool to help a person blend into society.
4. Certain external cultures that break Korea's culture and legal order will never be accepted. In the past, Europe's security level was smashed after the continent accepted refugees on a large scale.

i agree with the new muticulturalism in asia, but also the world peacekeepers also... korea has never started wars only finished them... korea will be the new UN.

@@francoismarc3 its because unlike the super powers that have the control over UN issues like rawanda n the blood diamonds by using hard power... but korea has shown how to use soft power in a positive way without harming other countries or peoples. korea like the many countries that helped to rebuild korea is now returning the favor by means of agriculture in bulding medical n educational infrastructures in third world countries. we believe in helping other nations to achieve happiness. its is korean to to think of others before our selves....i hope this simple explanation helped...unlike super powers who only pretend to help to take advantage by means of resources or interest tampering.
@@francoismarc3 but it takes people like u who r non nationals to spread the word. in korea we have a saying. its true when someone else speaks well about you, and not when u speak about yourself...its sounds better when a non korean speaks well about the good things about korea, so its considered bragging when spoken from a korean national. the world needs more community and not individualized thinking... for instance, it is considered to be wrong when you find or take someones belongings! but in some countries the answer is not always the same due to individualism!

Slow change is good. There are many Koreans and even some foreigners who say Korea is changing too quickly. Unfortunately, I have no power to speed up or slow down change. I just don't want Korea to lose its identity. It's why I love living here:)

I believe that Korea at it's core should not change. The underlying, strong, christian-confucian ethic that arose after the Japanese occupation and korean war should always remain the base of the Korean culture, that strong underlying "jeong" bond between people who identify themselves as Korean. But I also feel that the influence of other cultures to evolve the Korean culture in some aspects is also good. Such as the work ethic there needs to change to better give a work-life balance. Also, the die hard drive to compete and succeed should be mended with a more relax view of the world that success and achievement is NOT everything that Koreans usually put on a pedestal and almost worship as a focus of life. I feel that in these days, Koreans, especially young Koreans have lost their focus on what is important, which isn't about money and success but rather the larger picture. That influence of core CHRISTIAN principles and influence is losing its grip there and this is not a good thing. All that buddhist crap culture that ruined Korea in the first place seems to be resurging as well as the stupid ideology of reincarnation that seems to encourage the culture of suicide or justify it. These things need to change and Korea needs to refocus as they were before, in the older generation, who knew what was really important.

I'm sorry to hear that this will be the reason for multiculturalism growing in Korea...I would have hoped multiculturalism would happen normally through legal immigration, but I guess not...
Racial diversity is not the same as cultural diversity. I'd argue even in America and western countries, where you have racial diversity, white culture is still the supreme culture. As a Mexican, Afriican, Asian, you can have your culture, but it will never be accepted in the mainstream. So, even if other races come to Korea en masse, which I doubt, they will not allow other cultures to over-power their indigenous culture.

As a Korean I sincerely hope Korea becomes the multicultural center of Asia. It would bring so much good to this country. Even though I don't think many Korean people agree to this right now but Koreans are fast to adapt to change so we never know!
I think there are definitely some benefits to multiculturalism! And right, many comments from Koreans in this video and the previous video don't want multiculturalism here in Korea. With all things, there's always a good and bad...
