  • The man convicted of attempting to kidnap then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband with a hammer was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison. Jurors previously found David DePape guilty last November of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official.
Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison term. DePape was given 20 years for one count and 30 years for another count. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also given credit for the 18 months that he’s been in custody.

I'm not condoning what he did in the least, but this statement of remorse and deterrent is just ridiculous. So he gets additional time because he didn't act emotionally as they wanted him to? Note; remember to gin up an acting job of remorse if ever faced with sentencing. Also, this notion of deterrent should be illegal. The crime committed and the sentence for the crime should stand on its own, individually. Adding time to the sentence to ward off possible future crimes of others is illogical nonsense. That is suppositional and has no bearing on the particular crime being considered. What a disgrace that attorneys can make such statements.
