It's just a formality and part of due process. You will note that the son is NOT under arrest during this formality. This investigation and conclusion can THEN be used as further evidence against the other perpetrators of the crime. Similarly, this investigation and conclusion PROTECTS the son for any and all future connections to this incident.

Under the law, when a person's actions lead to the death of another, then it must be investigated. The majority of the time, in a case like this, the Grand Jury will issue a finding of self-defense and send the kid on his way. Not always guaranteed, but that is the usual route.
It's mostly just a formality which can actually help protect the kid, they'll most likely find him acting in self defense and since you can't be tried for the same crime twice he's pretty much guaranteed to be let go

But the fact that it went to the state/county Grand Jury means that the detectives are having trouble deciding the obvious. So I’m curious if he was unlawfully incarcerated, or if there were any charges filed at all. God forbid any charges befall the young man.
Any time a homicide occurs it goes to the grand jury. They decide if it was self defense homicide or not. Detectives/police only collect the evidence and work with the prosecutors office to set the charges. Grand jury decides if it goes to court.

You can't shoot someone in your yard unless you can prove they were aggressive towards you, but if they break in the house, even unarmed you can shoot them. Home invaders breaking in at night are the most scary. They usually know you'll be home, which means they're prepared to hurt or kill whoever they encounter while they do whatever else it is they're there to do. Someone tried to break into my house one night when I was there by myself as a kid--they were kicking the door, HARD, and the dogs were going crazy and I had yelled "who is it?" so they definitely knew I was there. But they kept trying to come in. Thankfully, the front door was a big, sturdy one that didn't budge, and they weren't able to get in and I guess didn't want to mess with trying to break a window. But every now and then, I think about what might have happened if they'd managed to get in.
For sure, your house is supposed to be your little safe bubble undisturbed from the world, after all your walls are what separates you from the outside world, but a traumatic event like this could break the illusion easily and show how vulnerable you actually are. I definitely understand the horror of such an event unfolding so suddenly, in a place that is associated with safety and shelter, after all my old man’s house was broken into at night by a couple of men in ski masks while he was sleeping a few months back, luckily he woke up and managed spooked them off with the only expense being his glass door which was shattered, but they could’ve definitely over powered him and do whatever with him if they were that evil enough to. That's just normal proceedings when someone gets killed. Just because what he did was legal doesn't mean the laws and procedures don't have to be followed first to come to a conclusion that says he was 100% within his right. He still killed a person. There are legal proceeding that must be followed in the event of one person killing another, regardless of it being self defense. It's very rare for someone to kill a person in self defense and not having any further legal proceedings. That shit only happens in movies that way.

It's just a formality and part of due process. You will note that the son is NOT under arrest during this formality. This investigation and conclusion can THEN be used as further evidence against the other perpetrators of the crime. Similarly, this investigation and conclusion PROTECTS the son for any and all future connections to this incident.

The courts do not need to get involved in this young man's civil rights - after all! he is a home front solder in good standing.
Under the law, when a person's actions lead to the death of another, then it must be investigated. The majority of the time, in a case like this, the Grand Jury will issue a finding of self-defense and send the kid on his way. Not always guaranteed, but that is the usual route.
It's mostly just a formality which can actually help protect the kid, they'll most likely find him acting in self defense and since you can't be tried for the same crime twice he's pretty much guaranteed to be let go

I'm a little sketchy on the right to defend with a gun. If someone breaks in and they don't have a weapon, can you still shoot them? I imagine you would still feel like your life was threatened or would they consider that unecessary force.

Can anybody tell me what happened to the 20 year old? He was clearly within his rights to do what he did. But the fact that it went to the state/county Grand Jury means that the detectives are having trouble deciding the obvious. So I’m curious if he was unlawfully incarcerated, or if there were any charges filed at all. God forbid any charges befall the young man.
Any time a homicide occurs it goes to the grand jury. They decide if it was self defense homicide or not. Detectives/police only collect the evidence and work with the prosecutors office to set the charges. Grand jury decides if it goes to court.

You can't shoot someone in your yard unless you can prove they were aggressive towards you, but if they break in the house, even unarmed you can shoot them. You need to make sure they are inside to cover yourself.
Texas does have a "castle" law, allowing you to defend your home and family. However, Houston is a liberal stronghold in Texas and the politicians there don't like guns or private gun ownership.

The law actually allows that. If someone is injured or killed as a direct result of a felony, all participants in the felony can be held responsible just as if they directly caused the injury or death themselves.

Home invaders breaking in at night are the most scary. They usually know you'll be home, which means they're prepared to hurt or kill whoever they encounter while they do whatever else it is they're there to do. Someone tried to break into my house one night when I was there by myself as a kid--they were kicking the door, HARD, and the dogs were going crazy and I had yelled "who is it?" so they definitely knew I was there. But they kept trying to come in. Thankfully, the front door was a big, sturdy one that didn't budge, and they weren't able to get in and I guess didn't want to mess with trying to break a window. But every now and then, I think about what might have happened if they'd managed to get in.
For sure, your house is supposed to be your little safe bubble undisturbed from the world, after all your walls are what separates you from the outside world, but a traumatic event like this could break the illusion easily and show how vulnerable you actually are.
I definitely understand the horror of such an event unfolding so suddenly, in a place that is associated with safety and shelter, after all my old man’s house was broken into at night by a couple of men in ski masks while he was sleeping a few months back, luckily he woke up and managed spooked them off with the only expense being his glass door which was shattered, but they could’ve definitely over powered him and do whatever with him if they were that evil enough to.
That’s why it’s helpful to stay strapped, my brotha.

That's just normal proceedings when someone gets killed. Just because what he did was legal doesn't mean the laws and procedures don't have to be followed first to come to a conclusion that says he was 100% within his right. He still killed a person. There are legal proceeding that must be followed in the event of one person killing another, regardless of it being self defense. It's very rare for someone to kill a person in self defense and not having any further legal proceedings. That shit only happens in movies that way.
