The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

At 5:42, for a moment, I thought that White could play Re5 and defend his bishop on e2. However, I soon realized that Black simply plays Nxe2 and then after Rxe2, he wins one of the rooks with Bc4!

The quotation above the board is from a different game!!!! The quotation "How can one lose with the opponent's only rook locked in completely?" is from a situation where Fischer's rook is preventing Spassky from queening a pawn. In _that_ game, Fischer did eventually extract his rook from the situation and beat Spassky.

As somebody who has never been a serious/tournament type chess player, I have to ask - so many of these games say "this position was reached in " ... do most players at this level memorize these sorts of things and what move was played next?
It seems like that would be overwhelmingly tedious/difficult to do, and even more difficult to recall.

    • @johnwamsley1896
      @johnwamsley1896 6 років тому +1

Yes. Others can answer this much better, but just in case they don't get to it, the answer is yes. These guys have studied every game that could have any impact on the game they're likely to play. They're real chess scholars. So when a player comes to a position that he's seen before, it's good to have all of the ramifications of various responses in mind rather than spend a lot of time working it out.

Today is my birthday and i today played a game of chess vs one really really old higher rated. ( my rating 1500) his rating i would estimate around 2200.
I turned 16 and he is around 85 years old.
I played fast he played like an anaconda piling on weak pawns.
I exchanged everything and went into the endgame with him i got absolutely destroyed.
I promised myself that i will beat him one day.

GAME ONE WAS NOT A MISTAKE! This is known in the chess world...Fischer had a draw after bishop take pawn

Yeah and Bobby was way too good at endgames too play that move without careful calculation
Sure it could’ve been a Blunder but I genuinely wonder if he did it because he was unimpressed with Boris and wanted to appear weaker. Hence saving his best openings. He probably fully intended it to draw, I doubt for 1 Game he just lapsed

Wouldn't be surprised if Iceland still only had enormous film cameras in the 1970s. Which would have been legit noisy, hot and intimidating

on 8:21 , real black would have been much better if he played G5 instead of QUEN to F6 , cuz if bishop to G3 then h5 is coming , in the engine its like 1.5 a head for black

Over the series, Fischer has been playing amazing chess while having some strange psychological issues. It's interesting how his chess keeps going strong even as the rest of his mind goes deeply weird.

Off Topic: Why No Polgar in your banner? Not for representing a woman or anything like that...She just played some really good attacking and interesting chess...Figured that'd do it.
    Just wondering...
