- Here is a little leaf, the very first tatting pattern I ever wrote. To help new tatters, I follow the pattern and tat the whole leaf.

The thread used is Lizbeth in size 20, the colour is "Leaf Green" (no. 683).
As I often get asked... I make the shuttles I use in my videos. They are modified and decorated Aeros and can be purchased from my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/lacossette).
Its a great therapy for depression attacks. I recomend this tatting for the youngers those who are busy in useless daydreaming.

Absolutely Katherine! As you say, it's just a matter of practice. :-)
And as I tat this beautiful piece a third thought - it would be wonderful if, when you're taking a "break" in a piece, i.e. when you finish a line of the pattern and tell us what you will do next, you take a count of three and just let us SEE exactly what the piece looks like at that point. I find myself blowing up the video and watching and reversing and watching ... to find that split second where I can SEE what your perfect works looks like so I can see what mine SHOULD look like. Just give us a couple of seconds where the piece sits still in your hands would help SO MUCH. Thank you!
Hi Cheta, yes, I note your comment. I do often pause to show specific parts up close in my videos (maybe not in this one) but I will try to do it more often in future videos (especially ones for beginners).

Thank you for your message Elizabeth, I'm glad the video was helpful in enabling to complete the leaf. On my channel, I currently have a tiny snowflake which I demonstrate from start to finish and also a one-shuttle edging video from start to finish which is not difficult and I do plan on making more! I should hopefully have a new one out this week. In my shop, I think "Mirabelle" is probably the easiest. There is one split ring in it but you could make a normal ring there instead, you'd just have to sew your ends in instead of using them to make a hanging loop.
This is a beautiful pattern! Soon as I have a little time I would love to try it out. I'd love to combine a few of these with your maple leaf pattern to decorate one of my face masks.
Unfortunately, when I followed the link for these patterns from your website, I got a Google Drive page telling me I'd need permission to access the document. Same for the direct link from here. It looks like a commenter 2 years ago had the same problem--maybe Google share links expire every 2 years or so?--and that it was a pretty easy fix at the time.

My little leaf came out pretty good for a first try! The maple leaf less so (the rings were too big inside the lobes and WOW my jks need help), but nothing a bit of practice can't improve!
Lovely, lovely! I have a friend who would love earrings made from this pattern in fall colors.

Hi Maria, thank you! Yes, I think I've seen this little leaf made up as earrings before. It would look nice in Lizbeth Autumn Spice, I really like that one. I do manoeuvre the thread slightly differently than other people I think when making the first half of my stitches. A lot of people wrap around their hand or one or two fingers but I sort of hold the thread back with my middle finger. I find that movement is much smaller and therefore quicker to make. I will make a video to show you, your suggestion is a good one. Thank you!
Oh, I just remembered! I did make a video back in 2013 which shows what the right hand is doing. As it's older, it doesn't have sound so maybe it would still benefit from being redone with me talking about what I'm doing, but if you'd like to see it, it would still give you a better idea of what I'm doing:

Hello! Your videos are wonderful and helpful, but if I may: it would REALLY have helped me for you to have used two EASILY VISIBLY DISTINGUISHABLE shuttles. For example, while you have this set up for continuous thread, I currently have thread on two shuttles and am thinking of trying your gorgeous leaf tying them together, but I can't tell if you actually USE both shuttles TO MAKE THE STITCHES - as opposed to one shuttle ONLY being the thread along which the stitches move. If I could tell the shuttles apart I could tell if I CAN do this by just tying the two together. Regardless of what I'm trying to do, having easily distinguishable shuttles would just make things easier to follow. And learning from you is just too good to miss.
Hello Cheta, yes you do use both shuttles to make the rings in this pattern. You can still use two shuttles tied together to make it however but you will have two ends to hide at the beginning which shuttles wound continuously avoids. I do always use two "different" shuttles in my videos so I'm not sure how else you'd like them to be differentiated? I really want to be as helpful and as clear as possible so I appreciate your comment.
This was my first ever tatting project and it was so much fun!! I have one question though! How do I know when to change shuttles? I don't quite understand when to change, because it doesn't say in the pattern!
Hello, thank you for your comment, I'm glad you enjoyed making the leaf. Some patterns label shuttles and say which one to use for each element but basically, when you reverse work, you change shuttle. If you follow the instructions with regards to the "rw" and "dnrw", you just use the shuttles as they present themselves. I don't know if I'm explaining clearly but I hope this makes sense. Usually, as you work, you will see which shuttle you need to use to carry on with the next element without having to cross your threads.

When you make a picot, is the double stitch to make the picot the first of the stitches in the next group of stitches? Example R 5-5. 5 stitches-picot-1st half, 2nd half and then 4 more double stitches?
Hi, yes, that's the way I count it! The picot is just a length of thread between two full stitches.
Wow, these are super cute! I love leaves. So, I'm really new to tatting, and I prefer to use a needle. Those shuttles are completely baffling to me. Why are you using two shuttles?? I don't understand.
Hi, many tatting patterns can be made with just one shuttle but if there are chains in your design, then most of the time you would need two shuttles to work them.

I need help… how do I avoid gaps in between the first ring and the first double on the new ring
Hello, it's just a matter of a little practice: you have to make sure everything is tight and the first half stitch is as close as you can get it to the previous tatted element and then try not to let anything loosen (and a gap form) when tightening the first half stitch of the new element. There's not really a trick as such that I can offer other than keep trying your best to keep those stitches really close together! :-)

Hello Silvana, I make the shuttles I use in my videos and regularly have some for sale in my Etsy shop if you're interested (www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LaCossette). They're all sold at the moment but I will have some more ready tomorrow or Friday.
I noticed how many times u interchange the shuttles used for making the chain stitches and the ring stitches, so it's not always one stain that makes only the rings and one only the chains. Is there any logic ,«behind» that, we could always have in mind when tatting or there is no wrong way to move?

Hi Christina, in lots of cases yes, you use one shuttle for rings and one shuttle for chains but here there are opposing rings with no chain in between so you have to use the other shuttle when making two opposing rings. Normally, you can go with the way the shuttles naturally present themselves so that your threads don't cross as you work.

Hi Maureen, I just use a craft knife to cut the tail. ... I'll still keep some of my other shuttle-prepping secrets for now though! :-)

Success! I maybe cut it off a little blunt, but it works so much better in my child size hands! Also, your tip of sliding and pulling to allow more thread in the ring taught me that I am tatting too tightly! If only I had longer fingers to advance more than a centimeter! 🙂
Much of what I've learned is from your videos, so I thank you for that. This is the first time I've used two shuttles though, and halfway through this video I lost track of which shuttle to use. I thought having two different looking shuttles would be enough, but how do you know from the threads?
Hi Kelly, thank you for your comment. The core thread is the thread that is inside the stitches and the working thread is the one that makes the stitches (the one that is wrapped around the core thread). Does that help? Where in the pattern is it causing you problems?
@@11Frivole I think I see it now, thank you ☺️ it wasn't anywhere in particular, I was swapping when you said swap and I dropped both the shuttles and couldn't figure out which was which. Paying attention to which thread is wrapped by the other helped. Thanks again!

Hi, I am not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have gaps in my work when working with two shuttles. I am using size ten crochet threat. Could that be the problem. I hate wasting thread but tatting is not forgiving of even tiny mistakes. I will keep at it though. And some real tatting thread would help.
Hello, sorry for taking a bit long to reply to your comment... what sort of gaps? Between your knots? Between rings and chains? I don't particularly like working with size 10 thread but it still shouldn't really be a problem as long as it's smooth and the knots can glide well.
I wish I could understand the logic of all the shuttle shifting. I never know which I am supposed to be using on either hand!
Hello, you shouldn't get too worried about which shuttle to use: when you reverse work, it should be apparent - so that you do not cross threads - which shuttle should become your working shuttle. Say you are making a ring with shuttle 1, when you reverse work to make a chain, you will be wrapping shuttle 2 around your left hand and shuttle 1 will still be your working shuttle. However, if while making this chain you want to make a ring coming off that chain, you would then use shuttle 2 to make that ring. Actually, you make me think perhaps I should make a video about shuttles 1 and 2, it might be useful?
@@11Frivole I think that would be useful, however your answer was helpful and makes me think I was totally over-thinking it! I wonder though if a lot of people do that. I had come to understand that the thread on top dictated the color/shuttle; however when it gets more complex is when one color is used and the shuttle hand changes shuttles. I think I can procede now without so much confusion though, so thank you!
hello! wonderful video and i'll be trying this out very soon. i have 1 question though: after the first 2 rings you have to makre the chain. to do this you use the first shuttle's cord for the chain's "cord" so to say, and you make the stitches with the second shuttle. how come these aren't done with the first shuttle? i would have thought that the second shuttle's cord would have gone around the hand as "ball thread" and that the first shuttle would make the stitches. sorry if my question's a bit dumb. i'm trying to learn but it's all very overwhelming
it's confusing because i saw a video saying that for chains the ball yarn is up and that for rings the shuttle yarn is up. but it seems here that the shuttle yarn is up for the chain as well.
in short my question is: how come we wrap shuttle 1's cord around the left hand and not shuttle 2's cord?
Hello, if you were working with a ball and one shuttle, then you could only do the rings with the shuttle and would use the ball thread when making chains. But here you are working with two shuttles which lets you use either. You will see however that as you work, the shuttles will naturally present themselves and you will see which one you need to use so that your threads do not cross. After the first two rings in this pattern, it states "dnrw" (do not reverse work); this means that the shuttle you have just been using to do the rings is in the right place to be wrapped around your left hand and it is the thread from the other shuttle that becomes the core thread to make the chain. If you were to wrap shuttle 2 around your left hand, its thread would cross over that of shuttle 1 which you do not want. It's often hard to explain tatting clearly with words (photos or videos are so much better) but I hope this makes sense. You say you are learning but I believe that once you've tatted for a little bit, you will see that it makes sense in which shuttle should be used. :-)
@@11Frivole thank you! i think i figured it out a little bit! seems that when working right handed, the left thread is the core thread. basically you do what's needed so the threads dont cross. and the rings can be either thread depending on way you want the rings facing and what position you want them in, along with turning at the right moment. is that clrrect?
@@reddragon4211 Yes, if I understand you correctly, it sounds right... apart from the first thing you say (which I might misunderstand) where the shuttle which is the working shuttle in your right hand is the one that becomes the core thread when making chains (the shuttle makes the movements for the knots but they are flipped so that they are made with the thread of the shuttle that is wrapped around your left hand). Anyway, it still seems to me you are getting the gist of it and I'm sure it will become clearer the more you tat. :-)

And a second question: usually one thread/shuttle holds the CORE thread and the stitches are made ON IT and one is the working thread. BUT on the third line of your pattern at around 3:20 on the video you say, "I'm making the next ring with the second shuttle." WHY are you suddenly using the CORE thread as the working thread and how is just the mention of reverse work supposed to TELL US to now TAT with the SECOND shuttle as the working thread?
I've never seen BOTH shuttle's threads used as working thread before? It might be helpful to explain this in the pattern as it is NOT obvious from the pattern as far as I can tell?
Hi Cheta, it's not always the same thread that's used as the core thread depending on which shuttle you use to make the stitches. In this case, rings are made so the same shuttle is used both as the working thread and core thread if you think about it. The terms "reverse work" are conventionally used in tatting patterns and do mean to use the shuttle you were not previously using when working with two shuttles.
I just have a question when you were doing a Pattering can you change the size of the thread I want to Patterig I want to do but it is a size 30 thread and that's pretty small can I do it on a bigger size thread and what I have to change the pattering in anyway or just leave it the same
Hi Trina, no, you shouldn't have to change anything. You can just use bigger thread and your leaf will just turn out bigger but the pattern will still work out fine.

Hello, I was wanting to try this pattern so I could have some cute little leaves to add to one of my fall sweaters but my only question is does thread size matter? I've only got size ten (for a different project) and the size four I was practicing with when I was learning (still am, I mean)
I was just worried it is going to turn out wonky if I use super big thread for such a small project and if I should run to joann's tomorrow to pick out better thread
Hi Rebecca, thread size doesn't really matter, it will just make your leaf bigger but everything will still be in proportion. Size 10 should be fine. In fact if you are making it for a sweater, size 10 might be a bit sturdier. Let me know if you give it a try. :-)

I went to your blog to get the pattern and it says I need your permission to get the pattern 🙏🏻 Another question: when you winded your shuttle the tread should come out from the back of the crochet needle or to the front. And your question is a good question because when I don't do the bobbin correctly, I keep catching it as I tat, causing me to drop my shuttle. Perhaps I should make another quick video for that too? When looking at the top of the shuttle, the thread should be wound counter-clockwise and come out from the back of the shuttle with the hook facing the back too (or facing right, with thread coming out of the right). Does that make sense?

Are you still sharing these patterns? When I try to access them, I get a message saying I need to request permission from the owner. I requested permission (which should've sent you an email) but never got it. I was hoping to print a copy of this, along with the beginners bookmark!

It's the equivalent of turning the computer off and back on. Beyond that, it might be easier to contact Google support about the issue than having to make all those new blog posts with your patterns. @Never 2 late - Naturelle Click on the gear symbol on the bottom right of the screen, then click on playback speed, select .75 or smaller number to play the video slower

I guess I assume that people know how to make the stitches so I tat the stitches at my regular speed and only slow down to point out particular areas or tips on how to accomplish parts of the pattern. Would you like a video where I tat everything more slowly? What kind of video would you like me to demonstrate? I have one that I made recently on how to make an edging and I think I do work everything more slowly in that one, it still needs editing but I'll try to upload that one soon. In the meantime, do let me know more specifically what you would like to see as a beginner. I could maybe even re-do this one at a slower speed?

Hi Laura, sorry you find I'm working too fast. I'll try to slow down more for my beginners videos. Do you know you can slow down the video though? If you click on the settings wheel below the video, you can slow the speed of the video. Perhaps that would help?
