    This is the kind of lesson that SHOULD be taught. It INSTANTLY engages the kids & they then sit up, pay attention & actually ask INTELLIGENT questions. The teacher knows enough to fully answer the questions in a manner that the kids can understand. The point is then hammered home by the practical demonstration. Compare the expressions on the kids' faces at the beginning of the clip & at the end of the burning & then afterwards. Kids like these are NOT stupid; just let down by shite politics.

      I don't agree. I saw mainly poor engagement that at times perked up, but, what I witnessed was a great teacher that impressed upon his pupils, but their enthusiasm was far less. This is why education fails the working class. The teacher can't enforce the attitude of the pupils, that is the job of the parents.

    The sad thing about this programme is that you can see which kids actually care about learning but don't have the opportunities, and the kids that just don't care. Such a shame.

    • @DaliborOkoro
      @DaliborOkoro 8 років тому +5

      What I've seen is that it's actually mostly the boys who care more as well. Not to sound sexist, it's just what I've observed, you can see it as well - some of the girls with their extreme makeup or lack of care that don't seem to be from particularly troubled backgrounds. I wonder whether it's because we live in a society where women can rely on men later in their lives.

    • @cun7us

      Dalibor Okoro Well judging an entire population by one class is hardly a scientific study but besides that, statistically, girls perform better than boys in school which defies your point. Perhaps girls are more interested other subjects? The history that David is teaching is laden with violence and other things that boys will naturally gravitate to.

    I have to admit I find Starkey absolutely fascinating. I think it may be the raised voice, pointing and slightly eccentric rudeness... Also opening a class with “Today we’re going to burn a heretic!” is fundamentally hilarious. I may not agree with everything he says but him challenging the class in the way he does, engages them.

    One thing which on the face of it some may find very puzzling ; how can Dr Starkey claim not to be a believing christian, and yet can describe the essence of Christian faith so accurately, whilst many lesser intellectuals who have next to no knowledge about theology, can have no problem believing with all their heart? I suggest that this may prove the supernatural nature of 'faith' as a gift, over which we have no choice.

    I have never met a child that doesn't want to know stuff. So from the outset, a child in the nature of a child (child qua child) is a captive audience. It takes government run education to dilute a child's interest in learning. If you think for one moment that State education is to benefit children you could be understandably mistaken. State education is political partnership with teachers unions and securing votes, whilst having control over what the children learn to the ends that they learn in a way that is conducive to current politics.
    So there is no incentive top down, to roll out any measure of a Socratic methodology - meaning not to teach children what to think, but how to think. Good presentations like this, are good, but the methods will never be rolled out in actuality whilst government isn't challenged directly to "get out of the way!"

    • @johnbull9195
      @johnbull9195 4 роки тому +1

      @@KRISTIANITY_ Because there is more to the Old Testament than just vengeance and judgement. For example the promises of mercy and the Messiah who will redeem His people that are fulfilled in the New Testament are made throughout the Old Testament. The New Testament also makes the same affirmations of God's judgement and examples of it are found throughout the New Testament. So it's simplistic to say the Old Testament is about vengeance and the New Testament is different because it is about mercy.

    • @KRISTIANITY_
      @KRISTIANITY_ 4 роки тому +1

      @@johnbull9195 Well the lack of detail is pretty much imposed by the audience I'd say, these kids would've fallen asleep had he started reciting bible verses, but this scarcity of specific examples doesn't make the view simplistic at all. Yes, I can find merciful bits in the old testament, and I can also find despicable horror in the new testament, but on the whole, if I had to force a quck generalization upon it and come to a conclusion as to which part of the bible is more tolerable, that would definitely throw the old testament out the window as the more barbaric and blood-thirsty version of Yahweh.

      I'm a Baptist and I can tell you through research that Protestants were just as cruel as Catholics. Every religion and sect of that religion unfortunately has bad apples. Look at the Irish Potato Famine. I bear no grudge against the British for what happened to my Irish ancestors, nor do I believe that it was an attempt at genocide. But they were put into that dangerous, vulnerable position of relying on one crop and getting the absolute worst land through discriminatory land policies based off of their "crime" of being of the Catholic interpretation of Christianity. Also, many Irish were sold into slavery by some of the various Protestant-dominated governments that ruled England.

    Starkey's wrong about a couple of things. One is that most people were garotted before they were burned (obviously not always, but in England this is what happened). He also claims that the Bible was written in Latin to keep it from being read by the people. At the time, anyone who could read could also speak Latin, so this can't be the case. In reality the Bible was kept in Latin to prevent people making unauthorised mistranslations. Otherwise having Starkey as a teacher would be great.

      SaintJamesInfirmary The jews saw Jesus as a heretic since he proclaimed himself as the son of God.
      But the Jewish authorities had no way of condemning him since the political power was in the hands of the Romans.
      Now, the pagan Romans couldn’t care less about Jesus being the Messiah.
      But when Jesus also was proclaimed king of the Jews the Roman authorities reacted instantly considering he was a traitor.
      A “king” that had not been authorized by Rome.
      So the Jews simply had to hand him over to the romans and their problem was solved.

    I understand the limitations under which Starkey is working. But to say that Christianity isn’t Jewish, especially in the context of its formation, is a troubling statement. Christianity represents what would become a major rift in Hellenistic Judaism. All of Jesus’ followers were Jews, and the founders of every Church were Jews. It’s one of the bitterest ironies. But it is also how Jewish morality and ethics enter Western thought and combined with Greek thought, forms our notions of liberal governance. Just to offer one other point of clarification: religion doesn’t kill people. Rather, the human intellect, divorced from the constraints of humility and tolerance for the integrity of the other person, is capable of true horrors. The greatest horrors of the 20th Century we’re far from religious. They were wrought by atheists. But common to all was the mindset, to ignore the individual in favor of the supremacy of the state; to idols of a mind unwilling to accept its own limitations.

      Simon Jenner I don’t agree. There are clear injunctions in the bible and Koran to kill non believers, and those who broke laws, like working at the weekend. You tell me how religion doesn’t kill people when the very holy books which claim to be the word of god injunction you to kill.

      Simon Jenner Hitler was a Catholic not an atheist. Stalin was an atheist. Neither did what they did in the name of atheism. No atheist has ever blown up anyone in the name of atheism. In fact the tyrannies of the C20 were driven by dogma - arguments from authority and control. Just like religion.

      You’re making the lazy mistake of saying that horrors in the C20 were caused by athiesm. But atheism is a lack of belief, in god, so it can’t directly cause anything. The cause of those problems was political dogma, which can exist whether or not someone is an atheist. There is no logical intellectual progression between being an atheist and killing people. There is a logical progression between people being religious and killing people, because this is specifically prescribed in their holy books.

    He’s not right about the New Testament. It is full of threats of hell, and eternal damnation and Jesus says he has come to enforce the old laws.

      @Jimminy Cricket if Jesus said he came to fulfil the old laws (eg mandating slave ownership and punishment) does that suggest he was opposed to them?

    Look, my point isn't that subtle, but its a bit more subtle than that.
    Because it is just about possible does not instantly make it fair.
    Your theory that "if I have the right natural intelligence and drive, I have just as much a chance becoming a politician or doctor as some posh kid" is clearly untrue judging by the number of MPs from impoverished council estates. Even for the ones that do escape, very few would share your view.
    Conversely, how many people in this video are ultra-rich?

    So because a handful out of millions have done it you think there is not a problem? Typical Tory fallacies.
    Obviously the very brightest will often shine through, but that is not to say the rest should be doomed if they are not as able.
    Just because there are a few people who do manage to come from the bottom to the top does not mean as a whole their social-economic group has had the same opportunities and support that are clearly so advantageous to Cameron, Boris and the Eton lot.

    An engaging lesson but pity that Starkey brings his prejudices in with him. To say the God of the Old Testament is a God of violence is very simplistic. Also, to explain a heretic as being someone who thinks differently is simplistic. It's not that simple-- its someone who questions the fundamental tenets of a religion.

      A fair comment, to an extent, but he's not teaching at Cambridge with these guys, is he? Basic first, to get their attention, make sure they're following, then add greater depth and nuance.
