The Strange Case of Counter-Strike's Piranesi

- Piranesi is an awesome map from the history of counter-strike. The creative process that went into the creation of this map is legitimately amazing, and it's creator deserves to be better known. However, despite how interesting this map is, the most interesting thing about it is its strange relation to another counter-strike map that is much newer...

im not going to lie, i feel like my ability to speak into a microphone was still partially coming back to me while recording this, but I don't think its too bad. Next weeks video I feel that I am more well-spoken. Glad to be back though, feels like a weight off of my chest :')
first time viewer here, although I mightve watched a video or two before (Penguin feels familiar), if you wouldnt have said anything at the end of the video I never wouldve guessed youve had a break or whatever. You are wellspoken, felt natural and like you've been doing videos like this for years. I enjoyed it, took me awhile before remembering that I've played Piranesi as a kid.
It was great man. i loved this vid
DADDY IS BACK!!!!
Your videos are the most relaxing and interesting in the CS community. So keep at it that you are doing great!!!
Ping ping
Piranesi and Cobblestone are often mixed in my mind. I always remember Piranesi as "the one with the boat".
And the giraffe, of course.
I never knew the difference between chateaux and Piranesi until i became an adult lol
I think of it as "the one with the art pieces". That sundial is really engraved into my mind.
Back when I used to play both maps, I was so bad at CS, I had no idea one was significantly more balanced than the other.
@@grimmerjxcts2206 chateau was one of my favorites but I think the T spawn there is very distinguishable (It's just a bunch of GREEN). Also the very close proximity to a bombsite too, similar to today's Vertigo.
whos gonna carry the boat?
I first saw Piranesi when I was about 10 years old in CSS. The water at the T spawn made my jaw drop, it looked so realistic compared to anything else I've seen in videogames before.
Yup, I spent many hours on CS:S community servers playing 16v16 [noclip] on de_piranesi. I always remember on the T side about half the team always attempted the window jump with about half of those players making it.
I played this map for hours with offline bots when I was a kid.
I wish they would bring back as_oilrig and de_survivor. Imagine how amazing the latter would look in CS2
De_Survivor is one of my favourite maps in 1.6
I think they made a map de_blackgold as for de_survivor. That would be cool especially the walkway trap
they might add oilrig as a operation map?????
i remember playing oilrig for the pool and literally only for that, it was fun as a child since there weren't many maps where you could swim (the cs 1.6 no-steam builds i played on didn't have poolday)
you can play a ported as_oilrig on the workshop. its decently accurate, has VIP and everything.
I loved playing the larger and weird maps like Piranesi and Chateau versus my friends back in the days. Great work.
Man I feel old. Being 9 years old in my dads Netcafe playing this map
netface with friends memories bro i remember old twisted tree line 3v3 lol and css also at everybirthday of us we got skins for present for league
ur dad had a netcafe? You completed childhood man
ITS A GOOD DAY WHEN PENGUIN COMES BACK 🗣️
Probably if they try balance this map it would end happening the same on Aztec Remake, it changed so much that they just renamed. I never gonna understand why they created a new name.. naming that map "Aztec II" it would be a better option for players to play since day 1, the nostalgia can drive people opinions lol
Piranesi is my favorite map of all time. So much nostalgia. Thanks for this, man.
Piranesi and Prodigy were some of my favourite community server maps back in the Source days. Can't wait to play on them again if the leaks are true.
i loved playing this map as a kid. that was like 18 years ago lol and i still remember this map soooo well
Im so happy to see you again! Cant wait for your upcoming videos
I would be so happy if de_chateau was modernized and added into CS2's map pool alongside these. The vibes of these maps are unreal
apparently chateaus lore is connected to de_storms, which is honestly the most underrated map in all of cs
De_Chateau are bit much T sided map since that one of the bombsite are so close with T_Spawn, De_Piranesi, De_Prodigy (map design edits needed) and De_Tides are better and should be added on CS:GO and CS2, if they wan't to, add some other underrated gameplay hostage map tho such as Cs_Havana and Cs_Siege (Cs_siege creator passed away around 2000's). As a form of nostalgic recollections, as for Siege map, a memorials and form of respects of deceased creator.
I miss a lot of 1.6, CZ and Source maps. Piranesi was the one i played the most, since it was just fun to play. I really would like to see maps like Piranesi, Tides, Chateau, Aitstrip, Prodigy in CS2.
Both cobblestone and Piranesi were my one of top 10 CS childhood maps. Good old memories.
I spent the video thinking "huh, this really reminds me of Canals", and felt so vindicated at the end of the video!
Good to see you back too, amazing stuff as always!
Great video! Glad to see you back. I wish that more casual maps like this would be added. As much as I love competitive and their maps, it is always fun to play on casual maps (like canals, tuscan, etc.) on the casual game mode.
It is sad that tuscan was never properly ported to cs:go.
@@rand_kk I mean it had an earlier version in the game early in, and now it has the newer version. What is different about the map that you would want to see?
So nice to see you back ! Some of the best cs content come from you in my opinion, continue.
Easily most underrated CS UA-camr in the scene, please don't leave us again
Piranesi, Vostok, and Prodigy are all great candidates for a rework in CS2. Loved playing all those maps in CZ and 1.6
The first name of the mapper is with two i, Iikka, not Likka. It's a common finnish name, Likka on the other hand is finnish slang for a young woman.
you're a likka
Came to post this.
Love piranesi, i have very fond memories of those old maps, prodigy, estate, havana, siege, loved them.
you gave me a great nostalgia boost. I always mention piranesi when i do my "I'm an old cs gamer talk". young folk who grew up with CSGO only don't even know this map
this makes me miss 1.5/6 community servers, how much fun it was to find a server where you fit in and had endless fun, my favorite was one called Da Moon with Aqua Teen Hunger Force sounds, was amazing
"I now spend 14 hours of the day looking at the giraffe statue. The other 10 are spent dreaming of the giraffe statue."
all hail the mighty giraffe
🙏
Great video dude! You're on your way to being a new generation 3kliks with videos like this. Always a banger. Editing on point and the pacing is great!
I made the same comparision yesterday on twitter, him and goldec are new generation's 3kliks, their content is not exactly the same but they have their own niche content with such great delivery
but better than 3kliks because penguin doesnt have a fart fetish

This map was very popular in 1.5 on 32ppl community server... its so big you could not get bored of it.
Same with CS:S. It was pretty common on the 32 player community servers. I can't remember the name of the one I used to play on, but it also had de_playground and had a really good map pool from which to pick it.
miss your videos so much. I'm glad you're back
your videos bring a unique and refreshing aspect to the cs content landscape
It would be so cool to bring back piranesi in cs2. It was so exhilarating to play that map with bots. So many memories!
A flood of memories came through as soon as i saw the first 30 seconds. Thanks for the nostalgia trip
Nice having ur videos back
I absolutely loved playing it in 1.6 and older versions. But we never took the map serious. It was perfect for internal 5v5 games.
so hyped when i saw the Penguin thumbnail, glad you’re back 🎉
welcome back dude! love to see your uploads in my feed again.
man why u always gotta make so many good videos on old maps, ofc i had like 2 or 3 that i missed but after binge watching your map videos i now know so many maps i miss insanely much and i will be crying myself t osleep about these maps being dopped in csgo for the forseable future
Glad to see you back!! Just when I thought we’d never see another penguin video!
I love your cs history videos. Please keep it up
You're back! ❤❤❤❤
Enjoyed this video. Love learning more about CS map lore
Welcome back, love the videos
Good lord...the nostalgia...now I know I'm old
always loved piranesi for the reason you mentioned; exploring the map. Oilrig was also hella fun; especially on wc3 mode
piranesi was amazing. i played 1.6 a lot but im a cs source veteran and piranesi was played A LOT in css
Piranesi is goated,i enjoyed this map back in the days, hopefuly returns in CS2.Nice video
I remember that Piranesi was always a hard map for me to play on, even as a casual player, which is probably because my favorite weapon to use was the shotgun.
It was a map that you saw played a lot, though, and I was always one to try and vote for maps that aren't the usual favorites like Dust II, Inferno or Office.
Been so long since I played, though, that I hardly remember any of the names. One that I always found fun, even if way too big and unbalanced, were the Rats maps.
you are seriously underated keep up the good work.
Oh nice! Didn't think I would ever see another penguin video! Welcome back!!
Hey man, I stumbled upon your channel a little while ago, watched a few videos and subbed but then didn't get any notifications. Seeing this pop up was a really nice surprise, looking forward to more! Also in regards to your pinned comment - didn't notice anything about you being not well spoken or what ever so don't stress on it. :)
Oh and I had no idea about the giraffe and had never read the posters in Piranesi, and I've played a fair bit of 1.6 and source lol.
Piranesi, Vostok and Prodigy? For real? My nostalgia levels just went into overdrive.
Nice video as always, nice to see you back.
Welcome back! Good to hear from you again.
welcome back king. I remember playing this map a ton because it was always apart of a defualt rotation for public CSS servers :)
So glad you're back!
Great to see you back man!!!
happy to see you back
good to see you back uploading
i totally forgot about this map. but upon reading "piranesi" the memories came instant back. i played that map alot in my early cs days. thanks for the upload
With this music and your voice it’s like listening to Historia Civilis cover videogame history instead of Roman history and I’m not sure how I feel about that!
Welcome back! Great video
that 1 clip of ricochet made me feel so nostalgic. I remember playing that shit when i was a kid.
Great video! Can't wait for more!
You can not belive how suprised I was when i saw a new penguin video.
yooo welcome back. i missed ur content :)
I'm so happy you're back!
Let me pitch you this;
Piranesi with jump pads
It could be a new or limited gamemode, i just think it sound neat haha
Sick video my man💪💪💪🎉🎉🎉 can't wait for the canals one.
Man I really miss this map.
I enjoy your videos!
Fascinating, what a great video!
Nice to see you back Penguin :)
glad your back
New penguin upload let's gooo
My only experience of this map is years and years of Trouble in Terrorist Town on Garry's Mod, but this was amazing and super informative. 10/10
Just when you feel like you know CS lore, Penguin opens the door to yet another secret vault of details and history 😅
ive been waiting for another video for months :)
This is one of my most fav maps from CS/CSS, I want it in CSGO/CS2 so much, also de_chateau
still to this day ill never understand as to why valve won't add all of these extraordinary maps to their modern CS [csgo]
growing up playing source, the best part about the entire game was option... you had endless amounts of games & maps to choose from and it left that unknown feeling untouched which i think brings excitement and pleasure. there are so so many maps i could mention like de_russka, de_cpl_mill, de_season etc etc.. but the point is a lot of the old cal & cevo maps and many more should already be a thing in csgo and i wish valve knew how much of an importance it is for not only new players but the long time veterans.
glad you're back
Wow, very happy to see your return, I recently fell in love with your videos and thought you wouldn't make anymore vids. Besides that, I see a lot of mentions of Melee in your vids. I love CSGO and Melee, and would love to see more things like that, maybe make a few Melee videos...? (I'd definitely watch them if you're voicing them)
Cool video as always. I would like to see a video of your opinions on balancing in the game, ex. on maps, weapons, nades, util and mechanics. I like your deep dive type video style also. Or videos about interesting niche, underrated, overlooked things in the game like what could be the different uses of the Decoy nade, or best strategies with the Zues f ex.?
I was playing AC2 yesterday, and found a place in Venice that looked very familiar, couldn't figure out where I've seen it. thanks for the reminder
PENGUINS BACK IM SO HYPED I LOVE PENGUIN VIDEOS AHHHHHH
Good to see ya back baby
Finally a new Penguin Video ❤
The floor texture in the street outside looked so familiar to me, that's why… Ikka has made a popular Quake texture pack with that precise cobblestone texture in there :)
Great video as always. Keep up the great work, I can't wait for the canals vid, one of my favorite maps until it got patched to doom. Kinda reminds me of how patched to hell de_cbble is...
Interesting map to cover, good video 👍
Probably the most nostalgic map for me besides Office.
Great to see you back brother!
Yip yippie 🎉🎉🎉 bout dann time glad ur Back at it
The opening theme always reminds me of Historia Civilis.
Very good video, thoroughly enjoyed. I loved playing this map when I was all of about 11 years old. Iirc it was also in Counter-Strike (Xbox edition) which is a version of CS I played quite a bit as I wasn't allowed to use the computer back then.
the model of the solar system was a huge flex by the mapper at the time, no other mapper could make something like that without making the map unloadable
Nice to see your videos and hear your voice again
I loved this map so much. So many memories. Best map ever
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!hmmhh*....Welcome back solider! We are glad to have you back!
these maps are some of the most nostalgic things. 2005, playing with friends... good times
btw, it's "iikka" (eek-caw), not "likka".. weird finnish name, or a typo that was supposed to be "ilkka", which is a very common male name in Finland.. anyways, "likka" means chick (slang for young girl) in finnish. I bet the surname is Keränen (pronounced keraenen), but they always drop the dots in english for some reason..
THIS MAP WAS AWESOME
